Hallmarks of becoming a villain? Don't quite agree with this take. His motivation was wanting to be stronger for the sake of beating others, Goku's friendship and Roshi's teachings taught him "it's not like that". A lot of people in the show want to be stronger for the sake of being stronger, even Goku. You can argue Tenshinhan, but Tenshinhan also wanted revenge for Taopaipai. I think to say Krillin had the hallmarks is a step too far. He was just a little shit who saw Goku as a rival and only he was worthy of Roshi's training.

A *way* more interesting method of ranking the weakest villains Goku fought would be to base them on how much effort vs. how little effort he put into fighting them, or how much they pushed him to new heights, regardless of whatever their power levels were at the time.

A weak villain list should include Puar, Oolong, the Pilaf Gang, most of the episodic villains from the Black Star Saga, the alien poachers, every Red Ribbon soldier, every movie goon squad Goku has jobbed by himself, most of the Ginyu Force, the mob that hires cyborg Tao in the lead-up to the Cell Games.... There is no reason 90% of this list should be wasting web space like it is.

@@LithuanianSurf we don't have a real metric for how strong Jeice, Burtur, or Ginyu are when compared to the other two that Goku didn't fight. Jeice and Burtur are the fastest, and they have special ki attacks, but as they can't physically touch Goku, we have no idea what their attack strength is compared to Recoome. Even Ginyu feels so outmatched by Goku that he has to injure himself and take Goku's body, and then he's so out of sorts that Krillin, Gohan, and Vegeta (who were being dominated by Recoome a few episodes back) can hold him off. As a team, they're probably invincible. But they make the classic mistake of engaging in one-on-one or two-on-one fights, and individually (except for Recoome), they're nothing special.

But Ginyu force was an elite force of Frieza. None of the characters could touch them except Goku after training with 100x gravity. And Gohan, Krillin and Vegeta could only hold him off because he was in Goku’s body and wasn’t accustomed to it

To be fair, Nappa killing four main characters is a bit of a stretch. Yamacha was blown up by the saibaman, Chaiutzo took his own life blowing himself up, Tien used all his life-force energy on an attack to try and kill Nappa, to no effect. And he killed piccolo bc piccolo threw himself in front of the blast to protect Gohan, so Nappa pretty much killed him by accident. I get Nappa played a factor in their deaths, but really only directly killed one of them

I can easily give him Chiaotzu as his self explosion didn't even hurt Nappa. Ditto for Tien. They were fighting and Tien died during the fight, regardless of how, it was still him exherting all of this strength and just dying. Which if Nappa was being serious, would have been the outcome anyway. But yeah, Yamcha was def not killed by Nappa

Honestly even General Blue is far from embarrassing weak. Dude was the first serious threat the Red Ribbon Army threw at Goku. Sure Blue wasn't nearly as strong as Mercenary Tao, but he wasn't weak. Blue's telekintic powers had Goku on the fence a few times, with only circumstance, luck and in some cases allies preventing Blue from from finishing Goku off. Blue also beat the absolute crap out of Krillin when they where in that underwater pirate cave. People think Blue is weak because of Tao killing Blue with a tongue strike. But really that doesn't make Blue weak, that just goes to show just how powerful Tao was that he could take out someone on Blue's level with such ease. I'd even say there was a lot of people in OG Dragon Ball that Blue was actually capable of defeating.

Honestly, most Dragon Ball villains, antagonists and rivals aren’t necessarily ‘weak’, all those characters-in-question are strong or considerably so, they’re just weak in comparison to now. There are few villains in Dragon Ball worth being ever considered weak, but most of them were ranking officers from the Red Ribbon Army. Even Mr. Satan is in a similar boat, according to Akira Toriyama himself, being actually rather strong for a Human but just looks weak next to the main cast. Mercenary Tao withstood a full-on Kamehameha and had the power to kill Goku *right* after, and almost did had he not kept a Dragon Ball in his gi, I think it was, the same assassin who was genuinely feared and almost revered by Roshi and Shen, who were seriously shocked to hear Goku somehow managed to defeat the bastard well before the World Martial Arts Tournament he met Tien at. King Piccolo overthrew the world government and totally leveled the area later in his final battle against Kid Goku, the same person who stopped Goku’s heart and murdered Chiaotzu before he regained his youth and killed Shenron with his restored strength. Even Raditz only lost to Goku and Piccolo because they were forced to use tricks, their last one involving Goku being forced to sacrifice himself just so everybody could be safe.

If you want to get technical, the only Z Fighter that Nappa DIRECTLY killed was Piccolo, even though that blast was intended for Gohan. Tien died because he used the last of his life force on a final TriBeam, which failed. A Saibaman self destructed on Yamcha, and Chiaoutzu self destructed.

Current manga goku can tap into ultra instinct and use super saiyan transformations in tandem with them, project his Aura into a spirit avatar for a short while think of it like him using a titan power but it looks like energy. Not to mention lately he seems to be instinctually getting stronger in some way after every battle and not just transformations or Zenkai boosts but he learns something new about himself or ultra instinct pretty much every fight at this point.

Other than in Dragonball I don’t think one could call any villain in this series “embarrassingly weak” when you could put pretty much everyone from Z onwards into most Shonen and they’d clean house. I can see the Red Ribbon Army losing in a lot of different series. I can see King Piccolo struggling in more than a few. Raditz...probably. Once it gets to Nappa though he stomps and anyone passed him could just blow up the Shonen’s planet if they really wanted to. Besides as Geekdom said - this writer isn’t scaling the villains to where the story was. AT THE TIME they were strong in the story, it doesn’t matter the current timeframe - they’ve all got their own feats. Because Goku hasn’t always been super strong, there were people he couldn’t beat easily so he took some L’s or other mains took those L’s for him. Plus...Yamcha and Krillin as villains? Lol
