How is it that the Chevrolet Vega is not on this list. I had a 74 Vega GT that cost me more money in oil than it did gasoline! People love to drop in V-8s for the strip, however.

I never really heard anyone who owned a Gremlin complain about it like other AMC cars. In 1970, the era of the land yachts, the Gremlin wasn't very popular but it sure was after the energy crisis of '73-'74.

Also, the Apollo lived on as the Skylark. Had a 77 version and it wasn't a bad car. But I lived in Wisconsin and they rusted out big time. Even the rear leaf springs rusted and broke. Inferior steel because they wanted to cut costs.

Nothing was wrong with the Gremlin. The 232, 258 and 304 engines were great engines. Car was durable. As for Pinto had nothing to do with fuel tank location. Was the fuel filler neck and was about 35 cent a car savings. The recall fixed the problem but was to late. The Chevette was a fine liitle car that many people stand by.

The pinto was a good car. But The chevette wasn’t that good to be honest. It was ok for what it was. But it was underpowered, the front crankshaft bolt was known to break and allow the pulley to fall off. The exhaust manifold commonly cracked, and serviceability was a nightmare , especially the starter, and distributor . It didn’t deserve to make this list though. While it wasn’t that good, it wasn’t bad enough to make this list. Truth be told, most of the cars in this video didn’t deserve to make this list.

In college in the mid-90s, I used to see those 20 year old Dodge Dart/Plymouth Valiant all over the place in the salty northeast. The cars would get body rot, but they were sturdy and would just keep going, plus the slant six and small v8's seemed to thrive on neglect. The only reason they're not around anymore is that most of them were simply used to death.

The same old garbage. While there is enough disinformation to please Mark Zukerberg, in reality most of these cars weren't too bad. But when the AI wackadoo said the 1976 Valiant was introduced that year and won Motor Trend's Car of the Year along with the Dodge Aspen, I threw up🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 How can we rid You Tube of this garbage? Makes as much sense as K.H. and T. W.

Whoever wrote the copy obviously wasn't even alive when these cars were on the road. Completely clueless. Hello? It was the 70's. Emissions regulations? Crash Standards? Change from gross to net HP ratings? The fact that the car manufacturers didn't plan for the regulations even though they were passed 10 years earlier? Any of those even ring a bell, Junior? Here's a tidbit of reality: All American cars of the 1970's were clunky, slow and underpowered. Funny that the footage you use is of hot rodded versions of these cars. Don't even get me started on the laziness of using this stupid AI voice to do the read...

Having owned a Mustang ll Cobra ll, a HS graduation gift in 1977, I have to come to its defense. Sure it is pale in comparison to the previous Mustangs in terms of performance with top engine choice being a 302 2 barrel carb v8 putting out a mere 139 HP, but like mentioned in this video, Ford had to quickly come out with a smaller more economic vehicle to coincide with the oil leading to fuel shortage that was going on in the late 70’s. That’s why the designation of ‘ll” after the Mustang name was used as to say that this is the next, entirely new 2nd generation of the nameplate itself not just a model body style change. It actually had more of a family resemblance to the first Mustangs than did the ll’s replacement the Fox body which looked nothing like a Mustang at all. The Mustang ll was the right car for the time for Ford as sales were strong initially and it actually saved the Mustang moniker from possibly being totally axed by Ford. To call one of the worst cars of the ‘70’s is a discredit to the Mustang ll’s place in automotive history. I myself can think of many more vehicles from the same period that should be on this list!

The Pinto's issue with the fuel tank rupture wasn't because the tank was located behind the rear axle; almost every car's fuel tank was behind the rear axle back then. The issue was the floor of the truck doubled as the top of the gas tank instead of the tank being a one piece, sealed unit. This was an ongoing issue with several Ford's for decades which caused them to install a fuel pump kill switch in the trunk of most vehicles later equipped with internal electric fuel pumps.

When I went to look at cars in 1976 the salesman privately told me he would never sale a pinto to anybody in his family. It wasn't a save car. The doors on 2 doors cars were too heavy. They would eventually get out of alignment and wouldn't shut right. Four doors was the way to go so I bought a Grenada.

I beg to differ I loved the Monza. My very first car was a 1980 Chevy Monza. I managed to get 103,000 miles out of the car. The only major problems I had with it were usual maintenance… Replacement of brakes, transmission, and only after I had accrued about 80,000 miles on the car. I loved driving it, it was peppy and me and my friends had a lot of fun in it. When I turned it in, however, the dealership who took the trade looked at the mileage and said that it was amazing that I got so many miles out of the car because it’s reputation for durability was only 80,000 miles max.

I noticed something. Both the Ford, Pinto & the Chevy, Chevette both have their gas tanks behind the axle they only say things about the Ford Pinto have a safety issue with the gas tank when Chevy Chevette has their gas in the same place as the Ford Pinto, but nothing is said about the Chevy Chevette,only the Ford Pinto. Sounds Biased to me

Not so much the placement, but more of how the bumper and supports impacted it in a collision. More of a design flaw than a placement issue.

Pinto was about the fuel filler neck. It was a savings for a part about 35 cents a car. Had nothing to do with gas tank placement.

So did Mustang ,but the Pinto had two bolts that protruded towards the fuel tank . Owned several still here.

Most cars had their tanks behind the rear axle until front wheel drive became the norm. Remember Ford introduced the center fill system in 1952 and many manufacturers copied it. While the Pinto's filler was NOT in the center rear, the tank had two bolts near the tank that could puncture it in a rear end collision.

I had a '74 Nova Hatchback, 350 auto. I put a Borg- Warner racing tranny in it. Motor was stock, It would chirp 4th gear. Pretty fast, for a little car, loved it!❤

Much to my mortification, my in laws offered to buy us a car. The cheapest I could find at the time in order to preserve a modicum of dignity was a Gremlin. Humiliating ugly for a couple with some taste and nearly killed us in a low speed rearender. The seats completely disengaged throwing us into the windshield.

Got my drivers license in a 1971 Pinto. I had 3 Chevettes 2 I bought new but they were 80's models (80, 84, 87) My first car was a 1973 Omega 2 door 350 V8 4 barrel carb. I loved that car.

I used to drive the Aspen/Volare as taxicabs (also the Dodge Dart/Plymouth Valiants). They were quite reliable and durable! Not to mention easy to repair. The wagon models though had issues with rust at the rear hatch hinge area. That was not an easy repair.

Historically the Buick was supposed to be the next tier below the Cadillac so it seems the Apollo might have fallen short because they needed to add a little bit more luxury to it. The one they showed here basically looked like the Nova on the inside. My buddy owned a Monza Mirage with a 350 and that #7 plug might be the maintenance issue he referred to in the video. The car was almost impossible to drive in the wet with the tires available at the time. Barely touching the gas at a green light and you might be sitting there spinning the tires with people behind you honking, lol.

Nope sorry, lots of mistakes and lots of misinformation. I owned no less than 5 of these cars, and they were all good cars. Reliable, economical, and more powerful than most 4 cylinder 90s cars. My maverick got an extra 7 mpg over my wife's 96 altima. The maverick never broke down and ran like a sewing machine. The altima broke down constantly. My 73 omega was an awesome car and very fun to drive. My volare was reliable and economical. This is an opinion video, not one with facts.

Those cars were great!....compared to the junk being mfg today ... plastic and aluminum...might as well drive them directly from the dealership to the recycle center and cut out the middleman

I had a 76 Vega 4 speed. They had most of the bugs worked out by then It was fun to drive and handled well By 86 it burned so much oil it looked like a fog machine

Many pictures of the Monza, were not the Monza. There were three cars that came out in 75. The Monza, the Buick Skyhawk and the Oldsmobile Starfire. They were all essentially the same, but with different engines. Some of the pictures shown were the Skyhawk or the Starfire. The Monza had the 4 cylinder or the 8 cylinder. The Skyhawk had the V6 and I don’t remember the Oldsmobile engines. The Skyhawk’s V6 was GMs first and was an 8 cylinder chopped down to 6 or a 90 degree geometry. V6s have to 60 or a 120 degrees. It didn’t fully compress every other cycle and ran rough. In 76 GM offset the crankcase to make it even firing. I owned a 75 Skyhawk for 18 years. The worst I can say about it was the brakes were less than good. From what I understand the Monza were a piece of crap.

moved to a new city in 84. had $ 500 to buy a used car. salesman sold me a 75 Buick Skyhawk Roadhawk Edition. rear spoiler (flew off on the highway) and alot of other awful skyhawk add ons Hated that car that car worst car i ever owned look back and laugh 🚑

You read to many Ralph Nader books and way too young to have actually seen, let alone driven these cars ! Funny thing, they made well over 680,000 Gremlins, 3,000,000 Pintos, 1,000,000 Dodge Darts, 2,100,000 Ford Mavericks and over 2,500,000 Dodge Omnis/Plymouth Horizons. Besides, my 1978 Pinto was a very reliable spring summer, autumn and Canadian winters !

@@Al-thecarhistorian you got it we bought a two door sedan as a parts car for my Mom's 76 Wagon(didn't work) In the middle of New Mexico I bought a disassembled 73 hatchback that someone else had the plan to reassurect a Mustang II (also didn't work) allowed me to have a car as a broke college student With the help of Racer Walsh and David Vizard (He's on KZbin, look him up!) rebuild my motor on the coffee table of my dorm room. My engine crane was a 6 pack of Moosehead lager and a snatchem strap.

@@doordedeur Not so much the Escort but the Ford Cortina was so highly thought of that an entirely separate dealer network was created outside of Ford Corporate to distribute them on the East Coast at least .Friend had one but it was a slush box and he kind of had a love hate relationship With it had the 1600 Kent engine in it also in the gen I Fiesta o It had MacPherson Struts which Ford had to pay royalties on so that's the reason for the wacky suspension design on the Falcon, Mustang, Pinto, Mustang II, and Fairmont and the rest of the Fox bodies.

I don't know Gremlin Everyone I knew that had one liked them, the only off-putting thing was the chopped off rear now you see cars with a variant if that feature, Pinto did what it was designed to do , hatch backs were the ones the top of the gas tank was the bottom of the rear section no floor, a practice Ford did on their other cars, Chevette no argument crappy, my wife had a Monza the Town Coup v8 4sp cool little car but you couldn't go very far with an I think 8 gal gas tank, and you couldn't keep a clutch in it the engine needed to be lifted to change the plugs but a kick to drive, and by the way nothing wrong with the Vega that a decent cooling system wouldn't cure, Americans just were dumb about making a decent 4cly, and aluminum ones at that they were gutless and overheated don't believe me look at their systems pitiful now their ok, Valiant came along in the 60s not 70s the Aspens sibling was the Plymouth Valorie NOT THE VALIANT

Get your facts straight. The Valiant was the sister car to the Dart, not the Aspen. The Aspen was sister to the Volare. Get rid of the AI narration!

The Chevy vega is a great looking small car. After people motor swapped them it was a good car. The gremlin is one of my favorite cars because it's ugly.

Ah yes we called them the Chevy sh*tvette, and the sad limp mustang 2, so many second rate weak and pathetic cars. Then add on what seemed like very limited build quality from auto workers union who just didnt seem to care. Made for many bad cars. Bought a car with a fin mounted tail light that never worked eventually found it was because the wire bundle was tucked in the rear Seattle panel and was never finished bieng installed.

Interesting that the voice in this 10 WORST likely was not alive in the 1970's. Who is he to judge. Perhaps he is jealous of the relative joy found in this era? An era when women were not plastered in tattoos. Having lived in this time the AMC cars looked great on the roads.
