After avidly collecting from the late 70s until 2010, I stepped away from comics (due to career & family demands) until just a few years ago (retirement providing a gateway back). Needless to say I’ve been shocked by what has happened to the mighty X-Men titles, which were bullet-proof for about 25-30 years, and I have not heard great things about Spider-Man either. I feel a bit like a hibernating bear who has emerged into a comic book world I never made. Primarily a Marvel-limited DC guy, I’m wondering what is good these days. Any rec’s out there?

It's a good list Wes, but for me personally the worst book of the year was Outsiders by Lanzing & Kelly. 9 of the 11 issues came out in 2024. While it was not the worst written book and the art was decent to good, because of the subject matter I felt personally offended by every issue. These low talent hacks were allowed by DC to crap on the legacies of Warren Ellis and some of the seminal Wildstorm works that you learn by the end of issue 1 its about. This was not some love letter to Planetary unless you hate the ones you love. Lanzing & Kelly attempted some high concept ideas and thought provoking commentary but they are neither talented enough or clever enough to pull it off. The individual stories are contemptable enough but when I discovered who the new Drummer was I wanted to storm the DC offices. I saw some comic shop employee on Facebook post how he read Planetary and was a big fan and that Outsiders was his favorite book of the year. It took everything in me not to respond, "then I guess you really aren't a fan of Planetary". Some of the "highlights" include the Challengers of the Unknown portrayed as arrogant, reckless a-holes who clash with the Outsiders in a story we find out that Aquaman is responsible for a leviathan graveyard left behind in the DC version of the Bermuda Triangle and that we should feel empathy for the young monster left behind. Another issue was a hamfisted exploration of the Batman psyche. Then we get to their introduction of a new Jenny, girl of the century. Their version is Jenny Crisis, an angry, angsty, black lesbian who's emotions affect the world. When she's happy people reunite, when she's angry there are catastrophes, when she is sad she threatens to drown the world. By the end of the book she has learned nothing except to be the typical insufferable know it all progressive type that we all despise. It just gets worse from there. Some of the unintentionally hilarious things in the book include having the characters swear, but it's blacked out. Which I think was the writers' attempt at some clever meta narrative that is pointless. Best of all, you get the impression that the high ideal concept that becomes the main story in the latter half of the book was supposed to have some effect on the DC Universe but near as I can tell it is being ignored by everyone. Lanzing & Kelly so desperately want to be Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and of course Warren Ellis. But they have neither the talent, the ideas, or the knowledge to even be their assistant. It's a pointless book that will be forgotten by this time next year, thank goodness. But it is still the worst book of 2024 for taking a giant dump on Ellis, The Authority, and Planetary. Go away Lanzing & Kelly, comics doesn't need you.

Although Chip Zdarsky's Batman has been lackluster and just plain bad at times, there's one issue this year that could possibly be the best single issue of 2024! I'm talking about Batman 149, the post-Failsafe Saga issue. In Batman 149, Bruce runs up against a young version of himself who turns out to be his clone. But that's not the worst part as the clone was designed to rapidly age and die. Unfortunately, there's no cure for this. So, after Bruce convinces his clone that he (Bruce prime) is not the enemy, they start to form a bond and a friendship. And, it's kind of tough on Bruce, given that he's sees the good parts of himself in his clone- nobility, loyalty and selflessness. For instance, Bruce's clone gives Bruce his own right hand given that Bruce' has sustained an injury, losing it a few issues earlier. There's a beautiful scene near the end of this issue, where Bruce and, we'll just say, the older/elderly version of himself from now on- go to the family cemetary behind Wayne Manor where they visit Alfred's and Thomas and Martha's graves, and reminisce about the past, talk about the people they've lost, their regrets and how times have changed- only the older, now wheelchair bound, Bruce really never had these memories as they were implanted by the Batman of Zur-En-Arr. Yet still there's a touch of looming sadness as Bruce has to watch his older self face death that is both quite strange as it is existential. In the end, Bruce has to let a part of himself go, which can be quite difficult for any person. I sure can relate as this is one of the more profoundly philosophical and thought -provoking issues that I have read in a very long time.

I don't go anywhere near the Ultimate Universe or Spiderman books, so I'll take your word on those. And I gave up on all of the X-Men books. As far as what would be on my list, from Marvel- three titles that I used to enjoy- Daredevil, Hulk and Thor. Every few months I'll check out an issue of each to see if they've improved and I remain disappointed. Just like DC has destroyed Batman, Marvel has made a mess of the Daredevil character. I admit, I have no idea what's going on with him becoming a priest or whatever. And Hulk as a horror comic is just plain stupid. As stupid as making almost every member of the supporting cast some sort of Hulk. And can there be some consistency on how large the Hulk actually is? I didn't mind the Thor comic as much, but it got too convoluted and I realized I just didn't care. From DC, I keep checking out World's Finest and keep thinking that it sucks. Cliche, predictable storylines and lousy art. Yeah, I'm probably the only person who doesn't like Dan Mora's art. As far as art that I do like- the art on Birds Of Prey and Flash, both are books that I enjoyed reading this past year, although I will admit that I skipped the last few issues of BOP as the storyline was dragging too much. Superman and Action would be high on my'worst of 2024' list. Lame storylines and not much substance, I read the last few issues in five minutes and thought to myself- that's it? I keep trying the Ghost Machine titles and not enjoying any of them, but I wouldn't say that they're the worst of 2024, just not for me.

Tom King's writing is quite divisive as it is visceral. For example, a recurring motif in King's narrative is the staggering of panels or pages where the protagonist or a central character engages in some form of monologue or a soliliquy, (the former of which breaks the fourth wall) offset by out-of-context violence on the other side of the panel or page. And, it's up to the reader to figure out what is going on. Inevitably, King gives you enough to solve the puzzle by the end of the issue or story arc. But ulitmately there is way too much confusion during the journey to the end. Some readers love this while others just get pissed off.

Tom King is one of my favourite writers currently. I've been reading and collecting comics for over 30 years now, and it's hard to get excited about current day comics because everything has been done before and nothing seems to matter. King is one of the few writers that can keep me engaged and draw out emotions. I get why people dislike him, but for me he stands out and I generally enjoy his work. If he's writing a book, most of the time I'll pay for it.
@SusRecordsCEOКүн бұрын
@@VaughnEsper i wish i could say the same - he usually gets emotions from cheap deaths IMO and writes the worst version of every character he touches - his books are almost always just Tom King books instead of being Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash... books and even then, they are often just versions of True Grit, Double Indemnity, Columbo...

Probably the two I hated the most were the House of Braniac Special and Nightwatcher #1 (the only issue I read). The former was a preachy, propagandist failure on an otherwise fun story event. Hard to disagree with this. I can see Tom Taylor’s detective comics being on next years list. Trying to mess with Batman’s origins by making Batman’s parents death somehow their fault. Because Tom hates rich people and has to make them all bad. He can’t have Batman’s rich parents be good people who were victims. It somehow was his fault.

I just read the new Challengers of the Unknown and it’s a dumpster fire 🔥! Tried to be objective but the big 2 have for years always churned out some crap along with some great stories and that was expected! Over the last 15 years I’ve dropped alot of their books because they are uninspired and boring which on a good note has saved me a significant amount of time and money! Currently I read the Hulk from Marvel and a handful of DC titles The quantity of bad books is staggering and especially very disappointing but I’ve learned to walk away and move on! I support my LCS by picking up indie titles (no regrets) and plethora of back issues of comics and various trades and HC’s! 2025 will be the year where I decide once and for all whether I’m going to support corporate comics anymore? Been there done that! It’s not just the cash 💰 grab but the time wasted on these soul sucking bumpercrop of moronic untalented hacks and really blame the spellcheck editorial clowns for the big shitshow! Venom run by al ewing is certainly on mine list of worst. Venom is 1 of the 2 most fav characters in general. Birds of awful fits the name better than Birds of Prey. Power Girl being such besties with tempest was so weird, there was not chemistry between them. DC is ruining Harley Quinn so much. The OG Harley Quinn >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Modern Harley Quinn. I prefer The New Ultimate Universe Ultimates is better than the New Ultimate Universe Black Panther, as that 1 is so boring. I kinde enjoyed Wolverine: revenger. Gotham City Sirens was uber awful, both story and art. Predator vs Black Panther did start out interesting though. Current DC hates Batman, you can see that with that awful cartoon: Batman: Caped Crusaders. What is the dumbest thing with the company as DC stands for Detective Comics, Batman is their brand. Alan Scott is 1 of the other character DC really want 2 be ruined. Some have theory that it is actually Alan Scott from the NEW52 Earth 2. With Amazing Spider-Man the worst part is paul. Wonder Woman is so awful, the Amazons were the bad guys in the story in reality, but "writer" pretends otherwise. In mine opinion: Not so Exceptional X-Men is the worst of X-Men From the Ashes. There r some Indie comics that were awful, but those were more forgettable awful, well mostly i forgot the names or were just 1 issue or just 5 issues long run.
