I have heard another reason Austin refused to lose to Brock Lesnar. Austin actually didn't want to fight Brock Lesnar at all. The reason is because Brock is known to be careless in the ring, and has injured people in the past. Austin was paranoid about re-injuring his neck, and thought that Brock would drop him during an F5, and paralyze him. This is also why Austin fought the Rock so often at Wrestlemania, not just because of the star power, but Austin considered the Rock the safest man in the ring, and was confident that the Rock wouldn't drop him on his head, or do anything which re-injured Austin's neck.
