Ive always used a chain checker, owen is right it saves you a lot of money drivetrain wise, especially the cassette, those cost an fortune nowadays.

I was a bike mechanic for 12 years or so...and the biggest thing I have to say to mountain bikers is yes, you do in fact have to change your pivot bearings. They do not move very much (in terms of rotation) and will pit and wear out far faster than you think they will. Please do not overlook this, and it might not be a bad idea to do this every year if you ride in a lot of slop and (especially) sand.
@LaurentiusTriariusАй бұрын
Suspension design plays a big part in linkage bearing wear, usually more links and bearings with a low leverage ratio like Giant's maestro or SC vpp will be easy on bearings, you can go years just removing seals and adding grease...
@Velo1010Ай бұрын
Change or re-pack the bearings?
@TheMrDavidCurranАй бұрын
@@Velo1010 both. Most suspension bearings don't really move much, meaning they wear out in spots in the bearing race. I have serviced 3-4 year old carbon frames that are so notchy, when you turn them upside down without a shock the swing arm won't even move under its own weight.
@TheMrDavidCurranАй бұрын
Obviously a dry bearing full of rust and muck will just do this same thing faster.

#ASKGMBNTECH Hi Anna and Owen. I have a Fox 36 Grip 2 fork on my year old bike and I just rechecked my sag and I had to put more air pressure than before to get 20%. Before it was 80 psi now 92. My weight and kit have not changed and I had all compression and rebound wide open as directed. I also double checked psi with another guage. Is this a thermal dynamics issue since the weather is getting cooler or could it be something else?

You’re barking up the wrong tree. This is a corporate sponsorship slop channel. Not a channel that would actually reply and help you. (Though now I’ve said this, I wonder if it will spur them into action lol) Edit: Lmao. Baited him into a comment

@@OwenBikeNerd Mate, I’m sure individually, you’re all great people who are very passionate bikers. You definitely are a good host, and clearly passionate. You’re smart and you know your stuff. However, this channel seems like it’s a horrible outlet for any creativity that you may have, because it’s bogged down by sponsorship shilling, brand deals, and other promotions. Way too many of your videos are just recommending whichever sponsors you have that year, and not what products are actually best. Your objectivity has been destroyed and I cannot trust anything you guys say. It’s the typical corporatised KZbin channel structure where it’s controlled by a central management team, and your content is hamstrung by financial incentives. With channels like Berm Peak, I feel that the viewer creator relationship is much less “slimy”. The audience isn’t just a vehicle for sponsorship views. Now I 100% understand that the channel needs to be financially viable. But why is it so overtly obvious that so many of your videos are created for the sole purpose of fulfilling a sponsorship deal, and not just a small part of the content that you’d be doing anyway? You guys are sponsored by what, 15 brands? And coincidentally they’re in almost every video. It’s tiring bro. I know you won’t say it, but I guarantee you feel that it’s too much yourself. If the channel isn’t viable without so many sponsors, then what’s the use. You’re beholden to the brands. Not the sport.

Great tips Owen, I run 3 chains, changing them every 3 rides, I also strip and wax before using them. This seems to make the sprockets last for even longer.
@komoonkhАй бұрын
You are basically spending more time taking care after your chain than riding. I wouldnt worry that much
@owenhildebrand1297Ай бұрын
Seems like extreme overkill…. Not worth your time doing that
@superlazy3355Ай бұрын
I've blasted 7 chains this year. 7... I'm not even joking and I'm now known as daenerys. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong because I'm only 11 stone and I can't figure it out. Snapped two chains in morzine so I decided to go single speed and it's not made much of a difference. I basically now finish my rides and take the chain off the bike and clean it in oil then leave it in clean oil til the next ride. £35.00 a chain... It's starting to add up. What am I doing wrong 😩😩😩

Hey mechanic, are you not one of those "Go tubeless fanboys" and if so¿. How is that tire stitching suggestion going to work with sealant, I did notice that the "magical dope" was not present.
@OwenBikeNerdАй бұрын
Hi - nice to meet you! Yeah I feel you can call me Tubeless Fan boy - for me it works great. I feel Tubeless set-ups can be great for lots of folks and they can fix a huge amount of flats that would have tubes deflated ok some impacts or cuts will overwhelm the best of tubeless sealant and burliest of tyres - but a tube might well have struggled in those situations too! But agreed its not for everyone - and if your riding and local terrain isn't packed with thorns or flints and you're ok running a slightly high pressures tubes can work well - The newer styles of TPU tubes are impressive - what tubes are you running? Cheers Owen

He forgot something actually that Tools Cost More than Bike Upgrades specially those Brand Specific ones
@OwenBikeNerdАй бұрын
Agreed some tools can cost - but good tools even if pricey ones can offer great value per use - and using them correctly can save you money which is beats lots of other upgrades - I bought good tools over a decade ago and they're still working well to this day. Cheers Owen

I agree there are many plugs in this and their other videos, but I have a suggestion: don’t buy the products, rather substitute them. Here’s what I have substituted: Torque wrench: Harbor Freight Bike wash: Chemical Guys car soap (because I use it on my Jeep, also) Park Tools: well I have a few, but others are from Pedro’s Grease: automotive bearing grease (I mean that stuff is for high temp and high wear)
@wonderwatch2239Ай бұрын
Sponsorship is what makes this channel economic viable, they have mouths to feed. If you can’t look past the add’s, and just take some good advice, you really don’t belong on KZbin… sorry🤷♂️
