I've wanted to review naruto for years and with it being a 100% blind review, it made me all the more excited!
I've covered One Piece, Dragon Ball and Attack on Titan over the last 2 years and today I'm embarking on my second largest journey to date! The 700 chapter long Naruto following the adventures of Sasuke, Sakura and the titular Naruto as they learn to harness their chakra and perfect their ninja skills!
Today we're covering the Fourth Shinobi War arc! With characters like Uchiha Madara and Tobi coming into full swing!
And now we have Sasuke, Naruto & Sakura reunite to fight for the future of the world! Cell 7 is back BABY! And it's now the end of the series!

Mark I have loved all of your reviews of Naruto (My personal favorite Anime) thus far hope to see you review Boruto after its conclusion. You have so you have no plans to make Naruto content for a while though now that you have completed this amazing story I and many would probably want to know How you could/ would change Naruto in order to make Naruto perfect in your opinion. If you do decide on this idea a possible title could be: My 100% Ideal revamp of NARUTO.

Using Guy’s backstory as a way to show the feelings of being 30 was something I NEVER would have imagined, but… it’s also somehow incredibly appropriate and profound. One of my favorite comments from Kishimoto about the end of Naruto is his response to a question of “what would you say to yourself 15 years ago?” And his response was something along the lines of “I would say to cherish him [Naruto] because your little ninja will bring you your dreams and become very dear to many people”

As a lifelong fan of Naruto I have to say this was awesome. I mean to even be able to cover so much material and only leave out very very little is an impressive feat on its own. But besides that , the AMV tribute intros summon such a nostalgic joy inside me for the medium that got me into heavy music AND Naruto. I think they really capture the essence of early Naruto and the sort of edgy post 90s culture that Naruto is so clearly influenced by in the character designs and settings (more clear especially in the early days of the series). Ever since Naruto ended all those years ago I’ve been rewatching all the swagkage videos every so often just to have some sort of Naruto content and to remember how important it was for me. This review of yours has given me an awesome opportunity to experience Naruto again for a first time and I just wanted to let you know it was honestly a huge deal for me, much bigger than a KZbin video should be for sure. Thanks dude.

The final Naruto saga has created a lot of controversy, there is a lot of heat on the Madara \ Kaguya issue .. but let's face it: the real antagonist, from the beginning, is Sasuke. Orochimaru, Akatsuki, Madara, Kaguya .. are all factors that led Naruto and Sasuke to mature both physically and mentally, and all of them contributed to the foundations for their final clash. The great war serves to "dissect" the lore and to give the motivation for the final fight.

10:40 The eyeball thing is viable due to medical ninjutsu. They’re reattaching all the nerves n blood vessels n shiz when they transfer eyes. Every instance you’ve seen of it has been in the presence of someone capable of healing themself or other people. Madara, in particular, doesn’t need to worry about it because Hashirama’s power subconsciously heals his wounds.

The only reason I ever called BS on the eyes thing is the relative speed with which some of the later transfers were carried out. Earlier transfers took hours, sometimes days, to heal and be useful. Madara notwithstanding, other late-series eye movements should have had a bit more time delay attached to them. It's not glaring, but it just starts happening SO MUCH, lol

Madara acknowledging Guy’s strength is one of my favorite moments in the anime and it works because Guys flashback is so effective at building up his journey to that moment. Love it. Even though you didnt talk about it Naruto’s final goodbye to Minato gets me in the feels everytime too. The final arc is admittedly super disjointed but the good stuff in it is REALLY good and there’s a lot spectacular moments wrapping this story up.
@mehmeh8403

100% agree. I think a villain acknowledging the strength of a hero is such a fantastic scene. Villains being vain and boastful is fine and all but when they are realistic/respectful and praise their opponent it just feels.....different. Madara goes from condescending to respectful so fluidly. In a previous scene he’s mocking the five Kage and here he is praising Guy. Seeing Madara do both is what makes this so impactful. It’s not an anime but when Thanos praised iron man in avengers i got a similar feeling.
@ethanhunt3242
@ethanhunt3242 2 жыл бұрын
@@mehmeh8403 Yeah, good point it really does mean even more because its Madara. Madara to this point has been completely dismissive of everyone except for Hashirama …but here he is after wrecking all the Kages and pounding the rest of the army into the dirt acknowledging and genuinely intrigued by this character who often times is portrayed as a goofball and comic relief. It’s one of the best character moments in the whole series for both Guy and Madara.

@@ethanhunt3242 i think it's especially fitting that it's guy, because not only are he and hashirama both powerhouses, but they both share similar philosophies that contrast with madara's. Hashirama's final words to madara about passing on their dreams to the next generation are almost verbatim what mark was talking about in regards to Guy. Both Guy and Hashirama became as strong as they did so they could leave behind something better behind for others. The fact that they are two characters pitted against madara both philosophically and are the only two who seem to be able to match him using their own power in combat is pretty cool

Seeing mark going over probably the series that impacted me the most is insane. I first started reading Naruto when I was seven and it was the first manga I ever read, over the years I finally caught up to most recent chapters which was just after the pain arc had finished when I was about 11. And for the next 4 years I would read it weekly along with bleach and one piece. Until finally Naruto came to an end, and I said good bye to my childhood hero. Watching mark review Naruto only reminded me of my own life and journey into adulthood. And the time I spent enamoured by this world I read weekly as well all of the linkin park amvs and getting the movies for Christmas. Man I remember when that last chapter was released. The emotion. The feeling of conclusion, finality. Naruto has always had a profound impact with me. It's one of the many shows I watched with my father, he's battling lung cancer right now. And it's tough. I've been struggling, probably way less than he has. But I've been having the think about a life where my father won't be with me anymore, and that's terrifying. But Naruto will always make me think about him, he always acts like guy. Bountiful youth, headstrong, not very good at some stuff, but always a huge heart. He's one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. His kindness is infectious like Naruto. This story brought us together, and we still talk about it. So I know deep down although I can never truly prepare myself for the inevitable, I know I will always have this. This show. This Manga. This story. To have that bond. Naruto to me means so much to us. Thank you for this excellent time, reminiscing over a story I've held to my heart since my father, brother, and I all sat down to watch the very first episode of Naruto.

Watching this review series really changed my view on Naruto's writing: I used to find it lovable but overly simplistic and rather tropey (shonen power-scaling™, light vs dark deuteragonists, one for the good of all, etc.), but your descriptions of the characterizations and themes they embodied throughout the story showed me there's a lot more going on under the surface that connected the characters to the plot to the world, and for that I want to express my gratitude.

my biggest problem with late naruto is the over abundance of transformations, like nine tails chakra mode (yin, yang, kurama yang, complete), asura kurama mode and sage of 6 paths, which all feel like random power ups with no real weight behind them, aside from maybe kurama mode. I honestly would've preferred if naruto just stuck to his chakra cloak mode and gained 9 chakra tails in it, with his final form being tailed beast mode

Madara literally left the entire world defenseless over some text written on an old rock. If the Infinite Tsukoyomi was a jutsu for peace, why didn't the Sage of Six Paths use it? It was obvious he wasn't the final villain since we found out how mindlessly he accepted a concept that made no sense.

@@ndro_gyny Meruem is actually my 3rd favorite. He doesn't make number one mostly because over time, given how he was evolving snd changing, I get the feeling with more time, he would have become more human than most others, making me sympathize with him. Madara is number 2 because of how intricate and detailed many of his plans were, and truly, there were moments where I thought where he could fail, which made him seem far more human that someone like Aizen from Bleach. But his motivations were semi pure, but he was so twisted by his perception and desires that he couldn't see exactly how evil is goals were. I can understand and relate to him, but the fact that he believes himself to be this savor of the world is what makes him so cool, and how the Ninja World built him up to be this grand force of nature that lived up to the hype.... before Kaguya ruined it. Frieza is number one for me however because of how unapologetically evil he is. He is q creature of untold power that rules by fear and the cruelty he displayed all of the smile, made me truly fear him as a child. A being who could and has wiped out entire races with a smile, the same way we kill insects in our kitchens or bedrooms. As if all others were little more than gnats to him and how he always seemed to have this unbound power that couldn't be stopped. He's a true terror and ruler of an entire galaxy and held no remorse in his heart for anyone, not even his own father.

The series may be called Boruto, but it's still definitely also about the OG characters and how they adapt to adulthood and its challenges. Some adapted to it better than others, and you could probably argue Naruto hasnt been the best leader or father up till this point, but he's figuring it out the best way he can, by trusting his instincts and the people around him when he can't do something alone.

Honestly you hit it on the mark with Kaguya. I loved the execution and Madaras conclusion and everything surrounding her but I don’t like HER. People say that kishimoto didn’t intend for Kaguya to be a final villain but with all the setup especially on the re read, it looked like the case to me. Kaguya just isn’t interesting as a villain or captivating. She just feels like a run of the mill villain compared to the A/S tier villains we got prior. She isn’t bad by any means but she’s very underwhelming if that’s the right word. Nethertheless, Naruto still is my favourite series despite that, and the final fight made up for kaguyas lack lustured-ness completely and concluded the Naruto series beautifully.

She's kinda...boring. And I beleive she dies kinda anticlimatically? IUnno. either way, Kishimoto probably shouldn't have just suddenlyhave ehr come in out of nowhere and take the spotlight. I really didn't like the execution of Madara's end and EVERYTHING surrounding Kaguya. ESPECIALLY on reread. The whole thing with Zetsu felt out of nowhere. And Kaguya's backstory and general existence is of the same vein in my opinion. I'm in the camp of "Madara should've been the final villain", as I feel like he was a perfect reflection and foil and example of what Sasuke could have become. And the whole reincarnation thing was a wash for me too, I felt like they could have just been on a similar path and say to Madara and Hashirama "We won't go down the same path as you.", without being ACTUAL REINCARNATIONS.

Madara and Obito have Hashirama cells in their body (Madara has his face in his chest) to give them a healing factor. Since the white zetsu is cultivated from those cells, the parts that need to be replaced are using Hashirama's healing cells. Putting an eye back in is just the application of the healing factor, just like the arm. Kakashi's eye was put in with medical ninjitsu that Rin used and I suppose generated optic nerves.

Thank you so much for this, Mark. When you first started this series, I was really dreading the point when you were going to cover the last stretches of this story; in my mind Naruto had regressed in quality past the Pain arc (a sentiment I share with many) but watching your reviews, I was reminded just how legitimately good this series is, even past that arc. I don't think a bad story would've captured the hearts of millions in the way Naruto did--no other fandom was this fervent and diverse, but perhaps precisely because of this that many fans who didn't like the ending wanted to distance themselves after the series' conclusion. It was really hard, especially that Naruto was ending just as AoT was exploding in popularity, and comparisons were inevitable. I remember this at worst cynical and at best humorous atmosphere that pervaded the fandom, followed by what I can only describe as collective cringe. Naruto felt cringey, loving Naruto felt cringey, but now I realize that was only because we loved it so much. It was an entire era, just over. Years later, I can look back on this series not just with love but so much respect for Kishimoto as an artist. I regret every stupid, insulting thing I've said about him in the past, along with countless other fans. When it wasn't Tite Kubo, Kishi really was the punching bag of online fandom, but I believe we're all now a little more aware of how draining, soul-crushing drawing manga on that schedule could be; the manga industry is a cruel, relentless machine that eats talent and shits gold, and anybody who manages to survive it even for a short while deserves so much respect. So much has come after Naruto, and I appreciate Kishimoto now more than ever for his artistic choices: he was one of the few who drew girls and women with normal body proportions, and even fewer who drew black characters as actual people rather than caricatures. This is a small thing, maybe, but I also genuinely appreciate how no teenager in this series has insanely-defined abs or gravity-defying tits. I love it. It's one of the few manga series out there where teens feel and look like teens. Anyway, thank you and your amazing editors for all your efforts. I really enjoyed watching these videos.

I said this before: they really should've just given Kaguya her own arc. The story didnt spend enough time building her up before hand, so the reveal was always going to be controversial, and even more so since it cucked Madara's place as the final boss of that arc. Obviously Kaguya doesnt ruin the whole story. It just ruins the end of the finale of the war arc (i tend to disconnect the final battle between Naruto and Sasuke from the war arc itself).

People believe that because Naruto had Kurama that he had life easy going forward in the story and could beat anybody he wanted to because of the large chakra volume he had. Kurama hindered Naruto's development on purpose, made him an outcast of his village, almost tried to get him killed on numerous occasions and I could go on. He made his life a living hell in his early development and even in Shippuden. That's not what people mean whrn they say that naruto had it easy tho. That's completely missing the point. They're talking about the fact that hagoromo gave naruto a free powerup that he didn't do anything to deserve besides being the reincarnation of ashura. Also the powerup didn't need training and was a larger jump than anything he had experienced up to that point.

@@mattiaserra1179 Naruto was only able to get in place to receive the powerup from Hagoromo because he got through all of his hardships. Even being the reincarnation of Ashura was a curse to Naruto at first- it basically forced him to grow apart from and fight against his best friend. But he was able to turn that around into a source of strength by the end. The message of Naruto overall is that the things that hinder you could become sources of strength if you find the right way to work with them, and that if you keep trying to find success despite your hardships people will ultimately gravitate towards you and you'll be rewarded in the end.
@mattiaserra1179
@mattiaserra1179 2 жыл бұрын
@@Thatguypat i agree to an extent. I think the message is conveyed greatly up until hagoromo. Hagoromo was a free powerup. No training needed to obtain it, no training needed to master it. Naruto could fly and regenerate body parts and none of that was thanks to his efforts. At least sasuke had to master the rinnegan. What good is effort if you solve the biggest problem of all with something that's the opposite. Imo it really cheapened the message. I'd even say that if naruto was still ashura reincarnation but didn't get the free powerup a lot people, me included, wouldn't have reacted in such a negative way
@DarksideXL
@DarksideXL 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattiaserra1179 Guess you didn't understood Naruto. The whole reason Hagoromo gave Naruto and Sasuke abilities is to end the cycle of reincarnation between the two brothers. Since when he gave power to one side it resulted in the cycle of hatred within Shinobi so he believed giving the two brothers powers instead of one would end things and to defeat Kaguya to prevent the end of the world. A reread is in order my friend. Edit: Also that's exactly why people say that. People who use the Hagoromo point like you for instance is missing the point all together that it's honestly concerning. The whole point of Naruto is defying one's fate which has been shown time and time again in the series. Giving Naruto and Sasuke powers ended the continuous cycle of hatred that plagued the great nations. It's why peace was so long in Boruto to begin as a result of Hagoromo doing this.

For me the main issue was that I ended the series on a pretty mild take at first. I HATED everything with Kaguya and basically hated 75% of the war arc that I probably would of dropped the manga if I didn't feel like I needed to see it through. In general everything after Pain I thought had problems and the Pain arc caused some major damage to the story going forward mainly screwing up the power scaling for the rest of the series and copping out with that full village rez. That being said the ending actually managed to make me go from being negative to overall cautiously positive when I took the actual high points of the series into account. Ended a hell of a lot better then Bleach or Fairy Tail. Problem is that even till today people try to tell me it is the best story and best series ever despite it's often times bad writing that I grew to hate it a lot more due to having to constantly explain all the problems with the series over and over to the point I forgot anything positive. Basically it become underrated because it spent too much time being overrated. Edit: Should mention that my opinion Naruto as a whole is a lot higher now. Also the overrated to underrated trend actually is pretty common in shonen at least in the west. Many shonen series have went through a period of being put on a pedestal to thrown into the dirt and dragged through the mud to going to a place in between where people acknowledge the bad stuff but can see all the good too.

Fantastic review Mark. I'm so happy to see this series still getting the praise it deserves to this day because as the years go on there's just genuinely more hate on the series because people just remember their nitpicks. Im always so dumbfounded that people only view this series being the kaguya arc as its main identity and the end of the series. I've enjoyed your reviews very much, however I wish you did cover more on Naruto vs Sasuke. Crucial characterisation of two people having different views on the world but still walking the same path. What it means to become hokage. What have they both learned as people. Its spectacular.

I've noticed that a lot of the hate for the series seems to come from people who only watched it as a kid and remember it for the fights and "cool Ninja aesthetic", and haven't thought much about the actual writing in it, claiming that the show stopped being about Ninja, "lost what made it special", or "destroyed it's own worldbuilding"... They also tend to say Chunin exams is the best arc, and that Naruto ruined its own message (sometimes without actually reaching or interpreting that point in the story).

I think sometimes manga writers (or fiction writers in general) have this plan in the back of their minds that seems spectacular in their heads, and it's answering all the why questions to the lore, like why chakra exists, why all the ocular powers exist, why the tailed beasts exist, etc.… and once all of those questions are answered, it seems so incredible to them, like they've wrapped everything up in a nice little bow. The problem is, while that sort of world-building has its value, what the _reader_ really wants is for all the _story and character_ arcs to be wrapped up neatly. We didn't know who Kaguya was the entire series, so it was difficult to care at all. There was zero investment. With Madara, he was at least foreshadowed way back at the beginning of Shippuden (perhaps even earlier?), and clear parallels were drawn between Sasuke and him. Since so much of the series was based on Sasuke going down this dark path, Sasuke ultimately repudiating the path Madara took would at least have some relation to a character and themes we've been invested in. Kaguya didn't really represent much of anything to the audience. She was more like a character we should have maybe learned about, but introducing her at the last second was just a mess. Of course the audience would feel apathetic about her as the "final boss".

Kaguya was forced into the story, by Shonen Jump, to milk the series, aka Boruto. The only reason why she makes some sense in the world is because of Kishimotos gift of making retcons make sense (to some degree). Like Narutos parents, retcons. Itachi being good, retcon. The tailed beasts, retcon. He literally said in an interview, his thought going into Naruto was he wanted 2 people to fight with giant godzilla like monsters involved.

The legend of Masashi Kishimoto... what an accolade Mark. Well deserved as well. As a fellow 30-year-old, I feel you on every level with your reaction to Guy's final fight. What's amazing about this series is how much it teaches people how to live and grow. When I first read Naruto as a kid, it changed my whole philosophy about martial arts, and it likely saved me from becoming an arrogant snot with a hair trigger. When I was older and in college, it reminded me to not give up on doing right by others, and now as an adult, after the series has ended, Kishimoto is still teaching me some life lessons through a silly little action-packed manga and anime.

The depiction of One Piece fans and Naruto fans is so god damn true. One Piece fans are crazy conspiracy theorist who, at the same time are just a bunch of party animals enjoying the ride. And Naruto fans are willing to go to all out war for and on their favorite manga/anime out of pure passion and love for it. The over lap on them lately has been telling as well.
@nousername191

That is so true. As a matter of fact, I think the years of excessive passion as a Naruto fan is what burned me out by the time Kaguya arrived. She was the straw that broke the camel's back for me and what made me put the series down until the scanlation of the final chapter came out. And frankly, the only sour note of that ending for me is how Sasuke and Sakura's relationship is portrayed. As a solidly One Piece fan nowadays, I'm solidly in the "Party animal that just wants to enjoy Oda's whacky story to the end". I barely take part in conspiracy theories and One Piece isn't perfect to me, there are story moments that I disagree with; but man, when I say it has no effect on my enjoyment of the story, I mean it. Sometimes, it's best to take a step back from the fandom and just enjoy the story for what it is and let the negatives flow past you.

The eyeball transfer is most likely explained by the fact that characters like Madara have been established to have some healing properties (I think, from taking Hashirama's cells? Hashirama himself was powerful enough to have natural, passive regeneration that surpassed Tsunade's healing abilities). So, in a sense, they're basically "regenerating" the eye into themselves and using medical ninjutsu to surgically re-attach it, I would imagine.

I assume many of us would’ve been fine with Guy defeating Madara and then shifting to Naruto vs Sasuke with their new god powers to reach the ending we got. I am also surprised that people consider Kurama an advantage when that wasn’t true until the end. It’s like people forget that Naruto needed strong mental power to control Kurama’s chakra in the beginning and also that before he and Naruto became friends, the only thing Naruto using Kurama’s power really did was weaken the seal holding him back to the point that Naruto had essentially been killing himself until Minato fixed the seal in the Pain Saga. Yeah, real “advantage” Naruto has, essentially being a long term suicide bomb without realizing it. Not to mention the fact that being Ashura’s reincarnation never actually helped Naruto until the very end of the story. Like any long term “advantage” Naruto had was either not a factor in his early days or actually a long term disadvantage until Naruto, BECAUSE of who he is, was able to turn them into advantages in the end.

The anime just brings everything; the score, animation, songs, openings and endings visuals, together so beautifully that I can't imagine enjoying Naruto without it. I know you decided the next manga you'd cover would be Chainsaw Man, but at some point I'd really love to see you tackle Konjiki No Gash/Gash Bell/Zatch Bell. Unlike most battle shonen you've done, it's not a WSJ manga, and despite it's relative obscurity in the West (aside from people who remember it from it's iffy anime adaption airing on Toonami) it's a pretty huge series in Japan that still gets merch and recently got a ongoing sequel (despite the author having issues with publishers). It's easily my favorite manga and I think does a lot of cool things with it's characters and themes while still reveling in the fun of the genre's conventions, and of course tactical fights. Perhaps it's best asset is the way it uses a whiplash contrast between it's absurdist comedy/cheesey friendship stuff with gut wrenching emotional moments with the art shifting to match. I also think a big benefit it has is that wheras I feel like a lot of Shonen manga tend to sort of decline in quality over time or towards the end (The buu arc in DB, parts of the War arc here in Naruto, etc), Gash only really ever gets better, though on the flip side I do think the early villain of the week content in Gash isn't as strong an opening as what some shonen have: it's enjoyable even early on and does continue to improve, but stuff like fights are definetely less strategic early on and I'd say the manga truly becomes excellent once it shifts to an arc based format instead of the episodic format of early volumes. Since you primarily cover Manga, not anime, I also think you'd be well suited to it in that the anime adaption had a lot of issues, eventually divering from the manga's plot entirely.

i think by mentioning that Naruto follows Hashirama and Sasuke probably follows Madara was enough for him. I think we all get the point there :)

I also think it didn’t affect him. I know it didn’t affect my view of the story either. Being a reincarnation of Ashura never accounted for anything to Naruto until that very end point. People often act like it changes everything about Naruto as a character but it really didn’t. Naruto still struggled to learn as a genin, still suffered for being a jinchuriki, still won fights because of who he is rather than his Nine Tails power at most points of the story… at most, the only thing it objectively did was demonstrate, through the two that confronted it, that the cycle of hatred has been a generational clash. Also many of the same people who often criticize that it changes Naruto as a character (which I already explained why I disagree with that assessment) also tends to give Sasuke a free pass for being a reincarnation, and I would guess that Mark didn’t want Naruto fans and haters to start the 5th Great Ninja War in the comments section.

it's one of the thing I disliked the most tbh. It felt like the naruto we knew was nothing but a "Indra 4.0". It felt like a huge slap in the face to the whole story showing us how strong naruto's resolve was.

Except it's not true The reincarnation point is actually a cultural problem that Naruto has. This comes from the fact that the Japanese have a very different view of seeing these concepts. I'm sorry if this is a bit long and complicated. This reincarnation, like this story of child of the prophecy are actually Buddhist concepts (the samsara and karma) which are well known in Japan and Asia. Rinnegan literally means "the samsara eye" and karma you generally know what it is (as a reminder if you do good/bad things, good/bad things happen to you). The main concept of this reincarnation is that each person's basic situation is caused by the karma of the actions of their past lives (in this case the basic situations of Naruto and Sasuke were greatly influenced by the actions of Hashirama and Madara) but despite everything they can react in the present by their own actions (which explains the end, and yes this thing is the logical continuity with Neji). Page 70 of Naruto databook 4 also confirms that the cycle of reincarnation in which Naruto and Sasuke are is the samsara. Naruto who is the reincarnation of Ashura is nothing special, it's just a natural phenomenon on how many people view life in Japan (and Asia). Globally, there are between 1 and 1.6 billion people in the world who believe in samsara (Hinduism and Buddhism combined). It's just that here Kishimoto tries to deal with this aspect by showing that even if what happens to you is similar it doesn´t mean that you will make the same choices (as the rikudo says) For the story of the child of the prophecy, the prophecies also exist in his religions. It´s actually the actions specific only to Naruto because what Gamamaru sees is the karma of individuals (page 83 of databook 4 explains that gamamaru has the power to see the karma of individuals, in Buddhism it´s the divine eye power from what I have read). This is again a problem of cultural conception Naruto also has a third level reading on religion (which is basically its main subject if you look deeper) since the conflicts between the Uchiha and the Senju are in terms of beliefs a big representation of the conflicts that exist between Shintoism and Buddhism (which are the 2 main religions of Japan, besides susano, amaterasu, izanami/izanagi etc… come from Shinto folklore), and the manga ends on the fact that it´s by overcoming hatreds and divisions and by advancing together that it will be possible to bring peace and build a better world (moreover for the anecdote, in Japan it´s possible to be believers of the 2 religions). I get these informations from several searches on the internet (wikipedia, interviews and forums), in term of video I recommend the video of Korean Dost on Naruto and also the video, Naruto's Complex Subtext and Themes: Buddhism, Shintoism, and Hinduism if you are interested .

I think its also a fear of backlash. Mark had his en passioned moment where he talked about Naruto is who he is, because of what he does. Not what he has (nine tails). That is undone a few chapters later with he's a reincarnation of a guy. Is then gifted powers from ninja Jesus. So the efforts of man who is talentless and was only good at punching. Where not good enough, even to destroy his body to its core and open all 8 gates. It was not enough, because the chosen one of fate is here. Edit* Mark likes to focus on the positives, so I see why to skip over the Indra/ Asura stuff. That, Kaguya, and Sasuke x Sakura, are kinda the root of the whole fan bases problems.

You nailed it for Kaguya. For me she felt forced and wasn't something I felt engaging at all. On top of that, the "naruto is the reincarnation of" story felt like a slap in the face. It felt like "oh naruto is the way he is because he is the reincarnation of that dude". Every single moment spent with naruto, showing us how he never back down, how he always move forward etc... All of that, in the end, felt like a lie with that info. I hated it. I love Naruto but I hate the end.

I think you're comparing reincarnation in Naruto to real life. Even stories of reincarnation IRL have people remembering their past lives when they are a child but then forgetting it and started a NEW life growing up. There are parallels but you're logic is that reincarnates are "copy paste" personality of their former selves. Naruto is not Ashura...even Hashirama wasn't. Young Naruto was alone and likes to do things by himself, he thinks highly of his strength and conceited totally like Indra, until meeting Iruka. and Young Sasuke was full of love and optimism and always dependant of Itachi so much so like Ashura until the massacre of his clan. What I'm trying to say is, regardless if they are reincarnates, circumstances of their time still shapes them. Even the Sage of the Six Paths noted that Naruto is different from all other reincarnates due to his maverick/unpredictable nature, befriended the Bijuus and break the cycle which former reincarnates failed to do. That's because of Naruto's character, not Ashura. A reincarnate personality is not copy paste...there are parallels but still different.

@@hc.117 Kaguya feeling under developed and stuff is also largely a cultural issue, IMO. She's based on the most popular folktale in Japan, something all Japanese people are familiar with from a young age, and her personality and attitude is in keeping with the popular depictions of Heian era nobility. Obviously it could have been integrated better. The earliest hints at Kaguya via the Sage of Six Paths aren't well telegraphed (especially if you're not familiar with Japanese folklore), and the reveal that Naruto and Sasuke have inherited the chakra of Asura and Indra comes very late in the story. Perhaps if those elements had been seeded earlier, back when Pain and the Rinnegan were first introduced, perhaps woven into the prophecies of the ancient toad sage, it would have worked better. But then, it's a manga, and the genre doesn't lend itself well to plotting out a story over multiple years or making sure there's enough time for a concise ending. _One Piece_ is maybe the only series I can think of where the author is given enough latitude to properly end a series in a completely satisfying way. Most manga endings feel abrupt and rushed, even when they're announced months ahead of time, simply due to the nature of serialization in WSJ. All that to say, landing a 72-volume manga series as neatly as Kishimoto did is a feat in and of itself.

Everyone in the comments is making sense Yes, it's true that the reincarnation doesn't really take away from his character, it's true, BUT But it simply wasn't well explained, truth is many people took away the same thing he did, me included at the time, i think it's pretty clear from the reaction of SO MANY people that Kishimoto did a poor job explaining and executing this reincarnation plot, so much so that a majority of people misunderstood it and felt it ruined earlier parts of the series, and i can understand that. The reincarnation itself is not a problem, but the execution was

he ending of series was well thought by kishimoto and he was happy that he got to end things like he wanted. he definitely made some odd choices which were totally out of class but apart from those, i was happy that he was managed to sort out things between Naruto and sasuke which was the side course of the series. the show is my favorite and i accept the flaws but it just closer to my heart due to numerous characters. thanks your for reviewing this series mark.!
