I still to this day want to know why Shanks was in East Blue during chapter one and why he said they are going north next. Nothing is north other than a few islands and the Red Line. Is there a way through the Red Line there to allow them into the North Blue? Is Roger's grave hidden there? We have seen pretty much every other important character's grave(even Kuina's was shown in a chapter cover) except.... SPOILER... except for Lady Toki and Oden's graves which I think we will see before the end of Wano. That just leaves the graves of Roger and maybe Usopp's mom not shown. Not saying they are alive, just saying that Oda tends to show them which means Roger's grave is probably somewhere hidden in the world or the Navy destroyed the body but given Oda's style I see that as unlikely.

One thing that wasn't mentioned but I loved about this arc was that Zoro learning to cut steel wasn't just a power-up. Repeatedly in the past, Zoro's been in situations where he was handicapped by his inability to cut through steel, so being able to do so here represents the overcoming of a massive hurdle that significantly changes how threatening or inescapable situations are for the Straw Hats. And it's something people will call out for a while, with them being astounded by the fact that Zoro can cut through steel. Beautiful but understated character writing, I thought.

@@thePlayer787 I doubt that. Oda has an outline (regardless of how rough it is) for each character. He knew by Alabasta, Sanji's past would eventually be developed. He designed Sanji's character to be more "stealthy" in early arcs (Little Garden, Alabasta, Enes Lobby) because the outline he had for him would somehow connect him to a family of mercenaries (and potentially his intended role in that family as "Stealth Black"). Mr Prince is obviously a reference to his royalty heritage. He even had Sanji briefly bring up that he was born in the North Blue, which implies he traversed either the Calm Belt or Reverse mountain (how would any "regular" civilian have access to either?). Want more proof? This is a little fact that I just recently learnt. Back in Drum Island, Oda wrote Dr. Hiriluk saying something along the lines of "Pirates are amazing! Some have skin as hard as iron, eyes more keen than an eagle and voices that can piece the heavens!" to Chopper. Think about that quote, which could easily be passed off as Dr. Hiriluk hyperboling pirates. Skin as strong as iron (Armament Haki) Eyes as keen as an eagle (Observation Haki) and a voice which can pierce the heavens (Conquerors Haki). This shows Oda has outlines for almost everything he does, but the timing that he fills in these outlines is often many years or hundreds of chapters in the future. Yeah I am sure a lot of stuff he does expands in to more than he originally intended, but at the very least, he has set rough outlines for where he wants characters and plot points. Edit: Re-reading the series often shows you the foreshadowing and outlines Oda has set up, even some of the more subtle ones. For example, re-reading Alabasta brings up in regards to Sanji, his "habit" of always being around to save a damsel in distress. The average reader/viewer could chalk that up to coincidence and Sanji's already established chivalrous "white knight" personality, but if you think more into it, you could see it as foreshadowing for Sanji's exceptional Observation Haki. We've seen foreshadowing of Haki for other characters in pre-timeskip, so this fits in line with that.

Even at the point he said he came from the North Blue, there was nothing at that point saying that crossing the Red Line was especially difficult. That was decided afterward. For Stealth Black, don't you think it's more likely that Oda realized he had written a character who is stealthy and dresses in black, and decided which power ranger he should be based on that? And he already had a satisfying backstory at the point where the Vinsmokes were added in: He came from Baratie after being shipwrecked with Zeff. Oda doesn't have to plan out all this stuff in advance in order for it to look like foreshadowing; he just has to look backwards at what he's written and come up with conspiracy theories as to why some characters make the decisions they make. I'm willing to bet that the reason Sanji said he was Mr. Prince was that Oda thought it sounded cool and in character, and Oda decided after the fact that Sanji was a Prince based on what he had already written.

Two things that stand out to me the most with this arc: 1) Vivi screaming herself raw at the top of the clock tower is absolutely heart wrentching each time. The way the story is set up, it's kind of expected that once the big bad guy is defeated everything is okay, but it's not. There was still fighting and Vivi was still out there trying to stop it. It's kind of what makes the rain so much more impactful too. The soldiers and rebels didn't stop fighting because it was raining, it was because the rain cleared the dust so they could hear Vivi. Just genius honestly 2) the send off between Vivi is far more impactful for the reader (Marks reviews are great but it's a whole nother experience when actually reading them). Vivi cries out to the Straw Hats in hopes they can still call each other friends, but because of the looming Marine threat, any interaction with her would signify their allyship. Thus, putting Vivi and the kingdom back in danger for opposing the Marines. So that iconic pose of everyone's X's is an amazing way to avoid all those obstacles just to prove Vivi is still a crew member. Oda you madlad

Okay, I looked over the pages in the manga where Koza talks to the king in a flashback, and it seemed more of a concrete conversation than how you say it went in this video. Koza demands rain for his village, and says that the rebellion would end for sure woth it, while Cobra states that if they used the powder for rain, other countries will be adversely effected. The only vagueness that I could construe from it, sort of, is Cobra saying "Things aren't as simple as you think." However, to me at least, it implies he thinks Koza can't see a bigger picture when it comes to using the powder and its consequences. It just seems pretty straightforward in my eyes: Koza sees his fellows dying from lack of water, so he tries to get the king to use the powder to bring rain, but Cobra believes a reliance on it would be harmful to other countries close to theirs, and wants to be able to rely on a stable source of water. A case of long-term solutions for a better future in a present difficult time, versus short-terms solutions to fix present problems, at the risk of a problematic future.

I bet it'll hit Mark as intended, but time will tell.

It's easy to say in hindsight that it was foreshadowing, but there's no way that Sanji would ever call himself that in relation to his family. I know I say this every time, but gonna say it again. Wish you talked about the moment where Smoker let the Straw Hats go, as I feel that's an important scene because it's the first time we see a marine respect the Straw Hats and acknowledge them as good. Which comes into play way later in the story hint hint.

I was thinking the same about these three points you all brought up, but being fair to Mark he did spend 30+ minutes talking about as much as he could, there's so much going on in Alabasta that I can't blame him for not covering every single event Drum Island on the other hand was an arc he absolutely dropped the ball on because he spent more time complaining about something that he forgot to bring all the good points for Chopper there

I just started binge watching your progression through One Piece today! I believe your are on part 7 so far. My favorite part about Crocodile as the Boss Battle for Luffy in this arc is that he doesn't achieve victory the first time they clash! I think Luffy being able to lose or be captured is a significant feature of Oda's epic story.

I remember after seeing Vivi’s goodbye and bawling my eyes out, I told my friend who introduced me to the series that if they had found One Piece there and ended the series there, I would have been satisfied. That’s how good this arc is. This arc is often a grand finale for most shows and it was barely the beginning. The show may be a little too long but I am glad to be reading the manga instead and rediscovering what made me a fan to begin with.

The part of Vivi’s goodbye that hits the hardest is that the Straw Hats weren’t actually able to say goodbye to Vivi formally. There’s background that adds even more weight to the moment. The Straw Hat Pirates are just that, pirates. Technically in the eyes of the government and law enforcement agencies (the Marines) they’re criminals. Marines arrive at Alabasta to clean up and arrest Baroque Works after the battles, and the Straw Hats have to leave the island in a hurry to avoid more trouble. Unfortunately this also means that they can’t be seen with Vivi or even yell a formal goodbye to her, lest the nearby Marines consider her allied with wanted criminals. Just when it seems that the circumstances are set to force an unceremonious end to Vivi’s journey with the friends she’d grown so close to, she spots the Straw Hats throwing up the symbol they’d all marked themselves with. It’s a symbol of their friendship and trust in each other. It’s a special, silent message that only Vivi would be able to interpret. It’s her friends finding a way to secretly say goodbye and let her know that she’ll always be one of them even as they go their separate ways. Vivi immediately understands what they’re trying to say and is brought to tears (along with many first-time readers). It’s the kind of beautiful, emotional moment that Oda has proven himself a master at crafting. One Piece is a truly wonderful story.

I just found your video reviews one One Piece today and all of them. It is so much fun and so exciting and heartwarming to me to watch someone experience this story for the first time. It is my personal favorite, so I am biased, but this story is just so good and I love seeing people new to it get blown away by how perfectly planned out it all is. And let me just say, it is insanely fun hearing your theories on events in the future or how characters are connected to one another - sometimes it's hilarious how close you are to the truth but you are just note QUITE there. And I am looking forward to you finding out about it all. So as a fellow One Piece fan: I wish you the best of time reading it from here on out. It only gets even more amazing. And I hope you enjoy every second of it.
