Thanks Brian for always pushing the envelope for our gain. "Use your car" - best advice ever. I never worry about the miles at a given charge. Actually I leave it on % and don't even track it. After 2.5 years and 33,500 miles I just checked TeslaF's battery degradation report and it shows i went from 309 at new to 305 today. In the end I feel much of the mileage numbers are a guess-o-meter.

Cool editing with the 16 days. For what it’s worth, both the battery engineer and Elon made it appear as though long term degradation was only an issue if your car sat above 95% SOC for extended periods. So as your video shows, the frequency of high SOC charging doesn’t seem to be as bad as leaving it at that higher level for extended periods. Bjorn in Norway is a great example of frequent supercharging and long term health issues, this is also clear by tesla capping charging speed for frequent users of Superchargers.

You really should be using "Scan My Tesla" and "Stats" apps to track the battery. The 269-273 are all just rounding errors when the car is calculating the range from the BMS based on the EPA numbers. To do the supposed "BMS reset", you need to get down to 10% and then charge up to 100% - do this several times. Just charging up to 100% everyday for two weeks will not do anything.
@TechTesla
@TechTesla 3 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to go that extreme... 80% down to 30 is more than enough. Even just an hour drive on the highway will help. Remember the BMS calculates is capacity estimates by tracking power drawn from the battery. Charging to to top only forces cell balancing, which is not an issue with 3/Y
@MTNRanger
@MTNRanger 3 жыл бұрын
@@TechTesla My car has been trending downward for the last couple months. When I charge to 75-80% my range tends to drop to around 292 miles on my LR RWD. This summer, I kept it around 50% and my range started increasing to 300-310. I've been driving more now and need to keep it above 50%. I've done a decent day trip last week and that didn't help. I'm doing the "BMS reset" this week. I'll be doing a video with my results.
@TechTesla
@TechTesla 3 жыл бұрын
@@MTNRanger The warmer summer temps certainly help range estimates as you use less energy when driving. One trip is not going to make an instant large difference. It's more about regular highway driving vs sitting around all year with a few local trips to the store. If you had your battery balance in front of you like I do, you would see that Tesla has done an amazing job at keeping the 3's battery always well balanced through most charging situations without the need for high percent charges.

My Model 3 did the same thing. It started at 307 the first time I charged it when I got it. Then it dropped to 299 after 20,000 miles. Today after 69,000 miles, it's still at 297. Tesla said this is normal and that they anticipate a dramatic drop at the beginning, then a slow steady drop after. Those who are still getting 307 after 70,000 miles are just lucky.

So...I have a 2018 Performance Model 3 and I’m actually “guilty” of charging my car to 97-98% which, initially, outputs about 298-302 miles every week and half to 2 weeks or until I get down to about 10-12%. Since I’ve had my car (October 2018), I’ve probably charged at the supercharger about 90% of the time. I usually only charge at home if it’s an emergency situation or out of inconvenience (bad weather, late night, etc). My maximum output now at full charge sits at about 294 miles. I haven’t changed the “stock” performance wheels nor have I modified my car by any means that would increase or reduce the efficiency of the car’s overall performance.

There was a guy on one of the forums that re-trained his BMS to know what range he really did have. I drive my 3P a lot and after 2 years and 60k+ miles, I have about 10% degradation. Recently, I have been always charging to full because several days a week I am driving 150-200 miles on short notice. Without a full charge, I am often forced to supercharge to make it home. My effective range for mostly flat highway was a little over 200 mi when the car was new, and is now a little under 200. It is disappointing that the EPA testing protocol does not provide a very accurate mileage estimate for real world driving.

I do charge everyday, during M-F it is scheduled for 6:30 and i leave for work between 7:30 and 8 and drive on electric only to start. bottom line look for that stat of its available and do a comparison on that.

Time spent at 100% SoC is similar to reactions that occur during normal charging, e.g. it stresses the battery chemistry. It is best to minimize time non-exothermic charging as well as time spent at 100% SoC. From laptop and smart phone data, we already have ample data on this: if you do this for approx 2yrs, the battery will have degraded to approx 80% of original capacity even if not having used the battery at all.

It definitely does re-train/rebalance the battery. I've done this several times since taking delivery of my 2018. I have a CANBUS OBD reader I use and when my range starts dipping into the 280ish range (new was 310) I'll stop daily charging it to 90% and charge it to 100 for a week or so (not daily charging though) and I'll generally bounce back to about 300 miles of range with about 40k miles on the car now.

As I’ve been saying charging to 100% will not increase your range capacity estimate, and you just proved it. Interesting test. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think your total mileage reflects the capacity of the battery that is showing on that screen. What it's telling you is that the projected range you should get by driving the way you drive. In fact I think it is actually on the generous side considering the way you drive! Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to insult you, but as you know, the faster you drive the less efficient your car will be. I think that is only a 'guess-o-meter' (gom). Try this, for one week do your best to keep your w/mi down to 250 or lower. I will bet your full battery range (capacity) will greatly increase. The car learns you driving habits and the 270 figure what it 'thinks' your range should be. I had a chevy Bolt and I found this to be true with it. I now have a MY. Like I said I could be wrong. I haven't tested it yet on my Y. It only has a few hundred miles on it so far. Try that test I would love to see the results...

People keep talking about rounding as though they had a clue. A "rounding function" is a rigid calculation and will always give exactly the same answer given the same input, so no, it's not rounding. It's due to the fact your battery pack is made up of thousands of individual cells, all of which are constantly at slightly different states due to the BMS trying to level them all and maintain their health. The different numbers are real, normal and inconsequential.

On lead acid batteries to get long life you keep the battery from getting low is apply trickle charge at 2 amps to get 100%. I got 11 years life of a 3 year battery . charging at 20 amps or more to get to 100% will shorten the life very fast. I have Telsa 2021 model 3 using 120v at 12 amps to 90% never below 70% will not heat battery to cause degradation. When using 240 v at 32 amps does get the car charge up faster but more heat to the battery. Using super chargers at 250 , 120 amps will eventually cause degradation because of heat will shorted the life. What good about about the telsa battery is that ampere maintains power even at 2 % Where lead acids battery drops amps 60%. I plan to used 120v when I do stay home. Also have 240v rated at 50 amps for a quicker charge. When I need to used supercharger for trips. Francesca

Supercharger bad for the battery? Not sure the test results supports this conclusion. Perhaps "A Supercharger won't charge the battery to fully 100%" is a better conclusion. Using your cup analogy, it's a lot harder to restrict the flow from a fire hose (the Supercharger) to fill the cup that last small bit - so the BMS probably cuts off the Supercharger earlier. All these results fall within 1% and testing accuracy is limited by measuring device accuracy - which in this case is the Tesla software/sensors - which only report whole numbers. And we have no idea whether it is rounding up or truncating. So is 270 actually 270.4 or 270.9 vs. is 271 actually 271.0? Just some thoughts.

Ok, so you purchased the vehicle in March, I dont know if this is Long Range or Performance but LR is rated at 326, from driving, trips, etc its now at 269-272 in less than a year?!? That's like 57 percent loss of battery performance, if you do the math. Maybe this is Performance, owners should really put that in the description. So if you drive about the same in 2021, your battery would barely be in the 200 range (hypothetically) that's crazy.

My used 2016 90D X is down to 242 from its original 254. No biggie since going to a car wash 8 miles away rt, it uses about 20 miles of range. So the range number is nice but never really useful just like in ICE vehicles. There is an annoying factor with "don't charge to 100%". When you go to a gas station that's like saying just put 20 gallons in my 22 gallon tank please... Once all of the Teslas have 400 mile range no one will care... But until then it is annoying, but I still love my X!!

Actually, according to Jim Java's video, you need to charge your car to 90% for several weeks to make the range show the better number. So let's say 7 days a week for 7 weeks equals 49 days. You only did your test for 16 days, which is about one third of the number of days recommended. But it's all confusing. I have seen two different KZbin videos where two different guys say that after about a year and a half they have lost little or no range at all, and the only special thing I can see that they both did was follow the rule "always keep the car plugged in even when it's not charging". I don't know why that would work though. What is it doing? Trickle charging? Or giving the BMS a solid foundation for evaluating the battery?

Seems like you are conflating health of the battery with accuracy of the range calculation. The health of the battery will be better if you charge slowly and not all the way up. This is because those things exacerbate the dendrites. The accuracy of the range calculation will be better if you at least some times drain it low and charge it high. This is because the range calculation is based on the voltage, which only varies in a small range anyway, so going all the way down or up lets it calibrate.

I never gotten the stated range on my model 3, when it was brand new, it was at 99% stated range. After few weeks and 2k miles on it, it dropped to 97% stated range, after several months and 6k miles in, lost 10% of its stated range and keeps dropping. I've tried this charging technique and other battery conditioning tips from Tesla and others but to no avail. Something fishy about Tesla and its stated range, I hear many owners have this problem also.

The range doesn’t account for driving habits. That is a simple calculation of rated capacity/rated watts per mile. On my 2019 Model 3, it’s rated for 270 watts per mile at 65mph. For an 84KW pack that’s 310 miles. The graphs under the Energy app do take average watts per mile into account. There is a page on Tesla’s website that states this but I’m on my phone and not willing to look for it right now.

I know my model three lost 5 to 10% of its range in the first 10 K miles now has not lost any more for the last 30,000 miles, and I think that that is the norm more times than not. charging the battery to 100%is hands down scientifically hard on the battery! the BMS has no correlation to the battery health, the health is determined by battery temp and cycles. the BMS can lose calibration of the battery with routine good battery practice but this does not affect your range. example your driving habits estimates 270 miles well in 6 months it says 265 its because the BMS monitors how you discharge battery if you drive it like a prius it you might get your 270 back and not only that if you want to recalibrate your batery you must 0 your battery as well so take it down to 0 miles then to 100 and you will get the best recalibration you can do and doing this 1 time per month is all you need to do to keep it close to accurate. but note this is fine and good for BMS this is not good for battery. so lets not think the 2 are the same. whats good for 1 thing is not good for the other!!! just like health food is often viewed as healthy well yet it may be a little bit better than other foods the health food still kills you like all other food and to much health food make you fat. the best practice gives you the longest life

@teslakiller6959

I think it is more important to get it lower, than to charge to 100%. So if you charge 70%-100% it is actually worse for the BMS, as opposed to 10%-90%. You also have to let it sleep and not use sentry or apps that keep it alive. I think you should try another tactic, people seem to have good results from this one - charge 10%-20% to 60% (set the limit to 60%). Do that for 1 month or 2 if possible consistently. THEN charge to 100% and see if you have any advantage. By the way, Teslas don't have any top buffer (at least until the 2021 model in Europe, but this is a whole other issue I cover on my chan) - they charge to 4.2V at 100%
