I don't know much about the difference between in a full sized rig, but the Wheel Stand was so much better than I thought it would be, the only reason a full size rig doesn't move around is because of the sheer amount of weight that's on it. A wheel stand you can fold up and put away with the wheel, shifter and pedals left on too is a damn good deal - even in the video the 100% FFB, 20n of torque it wasn't that bad, you'd feel that movement in a kart anyway, and traditionally the wheel stands haven't been directed at those using a direct drive wheel; but it's good to know it can be for light to medium racing experiences.

For the money this is by far the best stand Ive come across and seeing as how many real world drivers have stated that in just about all realworld racing situations they never see more than 3-4 NM in modern power steering racecars GT omega has developed an addon to attach a frame for a proper seat connection. this thing is awesome.
@TheSimChannel
@TheSimChannel 4 жыл бұрын
true, the force of a DD wheel is really only needed for non-power steering cars. however, keep in mind that the wheel diameter plays into this as well, and 4Nm on a small 27cm rim feels similar to 5Nm on a 32cm rim. And then, as shown in my DD1 review, if you have 4-5 Nm as the maximum in normal turns you will still get to figures about 50% higher (so 6-7.5Nm) in corners like eau rouge. Give all of that some headroom for details and I think a 8-10 Nm wheel is enough to cover most real life forces you experience in power steering cars.

I'm kind of positively surprised to see how this stand held up. I own the very same one, and I was really impressed with how sturdy it is when I got it. To see that it even kind of held up to a DD1 at full torque is impressive. For some people it MAY even qualify as an entry level DD1 mount from what I saw, up to 12nm, which is what most people would drive anyway, and allowing them to switch to a full rig later on when they want to run higher torque. So you could benefit off the faster responses whilst keeping torque below max, at least so I would think. Personally I'm set to get a CSW v2.5 for this stand, also good to know it'll hold up to its torque just fine without budging. For anyone curious, I found that the apex also holds up REALLY well on carpet, while I don't have a load cell brake yet, and instead use the thrustmaster tmx pro pedals, I've yet to notice it slide around any. Maybe LC will change that, but part of me doubts that, I've done some tests where I tried to shove it around the carpet and it's very hard to get it to slide.

@TheSimChannel
@TheSimChannel 4 жыл бұрын
You mean the Heusinkvelds? You set up the force at which 100% is registered in the computer (choose anything between 0 and max=50kg), and you set up how much travel you need for that by putting in different rubber bushings. Mind though that they don't actually respond to travel but to pressure. You can put a rigid piece of metal in so they won't move at all and still control the brake force by how much pressure you apply. In that case it'll feel like pushing with your feet against a wall.

Thanks a lot for the video, I needed to know if I would buy a DD1 without having to get a big rig and the answer is a solid Yes.. I would only drive it on 100% to test it, most of the time if not ALL of it, I would be driving at 14-16 , which as per the video is perfectly fine .. Thanks again for the video cheers

Thanks for doing this test, and doing it in an honest way. Did the flex of the wheel stand make your driving worse? I'm looking at a few stands, the GTOmega Apex is one of them. Eventually I will get a Direct drive wheel. I am wondering if the stands flexing would make the wheel as bad as some on enthusiast forums, make it out to be.

I wouldn't recommend this (or probably any other wheel stand) for a direct drive wheelbase to be honest. The flex didn't really slow me down much I think, but the unused seating position, reduced brake force, and low trust in the brakes sure did.

So what would be your daily peak torque preference with that F1 wheel? I think next to the fun aspect of the video, it's also pretty informative to at least see the different FFB percentages. My CSW V2.5 arrives tomorrow. I was in doubt for the DD1 but I thought V2.5 is good for now, and let the DD from Fanatec mature a bit. But it looks like the fun really begins above 10Nm of torque, wich ofcourse triggers some second thoughts on my CSW at the moment. Maybe next year DD for me, first need to make sure this starting hobby stays this fun for me.

Just for clarification, or maybe I missed it earlier in the video; I understand the wheel FFB percentage, but I’m trying to figure out the game and car percentages. I play AC primarily, so I at least THINK I understand the difference in-game, but I guess I’m confused as to what the point is in showing both. Is it that you’re using FFBClip and 50% is what it starts with, and it’s ending up at 200% on its own automatic mode for this specific car/track combo? I guess you could be just watching the clipping yourself and working out that 200% is the ideal setup for this car/track, and you always start with 50% as your baseline? Maybe I’m about to learn something about how those percentages work that I didn’t know before. If that’s the case, please let me know, I’d love to be more informed!
@TheSimChannel
@TheSimChannel 5 жыл бұрын
uhh ok, so this has nothing to do with FFB clip (I'm no longer using that with the DD1). AC has one FFB gain setting in the menu, and another one per car (available via +/- keys on the numpad). The way I understand it the game calculates a torque on the steering column in Nm, multiplies that with some unknown scaling number per car, then multiplies that with the menu FFB gain and car FFB gain, resulting in some number. If this number is >1 or
@TheFleckening
@TheFleckening 5 жыл бұрын
The Sim Channel you’re explanation is much appreciated!!! Didn’t think I’d get such a detailed response. As far as I had thought about it (I only have a couple month’s experience, so I’m sure my understanding is limited), I had assumed that it was one of a couple of things: Either the menu percentage was the default for all cars until such a time where a percentage was actually applied to a specific car and saved, overwriting the menu’s “default value”, and making them effectively independent of each other... Or, alternatively, the two percentages are directly dependent on each other, as well as the wheel firmware’s percentage. So, say I have the firmware set to 100% like you, and also like you, I have the menu set to 50% and the car set to 200%. In this case, I imagined it was like multiplying 1 by 0.5, then by 2, which would result in 1, or 100%. Therefore, it would be no different than having all three values set at 100%, since 1 x 1 x 1 = 1. Again, this was all based on speculation, so I’m probably wrong, but in my confusion of not knowing for sure, and simply relying on settings provided by others, without any explanation of why their settings were more “correct” than anyone else’s, I’ve gone with FFBClip, simply because their explanation of what they’re doing made the most sense to me. Now, I’m not a fan of their dynamic mode, as the way it ramps up and down just isn’t realistic (which they actually point out, and just to make it clear that my opinions don’t come from a point of view that considers that mode useful in any way), but the way their automatic mode slowly narrows in on a proper percentage for each car/track combo that provides the most power without sustained clipping, in my opinion, is brilliant. Sorry, I didn’t mean to make this a sales pitch for FFBClip, but it sure is a nice utility to take the guesswork out of approaching a new car/track combo for me, and it might still be useful for getting that “perfect” in-game combination for each car and track within a couple of laps, and letting your firmware percentage be the limiting factor beyond that. I’m not saying you’re doing anything wrong, but I am curious what numbers FFBClip might settle on for this car/track if left to it’s own devices. Sorry for the rant, I’m just happy someone is giving me the time of day to discuss this stuff, even if it is a tangential diversion from the point of the video. If it’s spam, I apologize, but I’d love to see a video from someone like you testing the difference, especially in the context of a DD wheel setup. Have a good one!

@TheSimChannel

mhh yeah, maybe. but making a video about it would kinda require me to confirm what I think I know, and also check how different sims behave, etc. -- that's a lot of research that at this moment I don't have time for. thus, just as a quick answer: 1) I posted a discription of how I THINK force feedback works above in an answer to Ryan Fleckenstein's question. 2) As a result of that, and from my experience with the DD1, I'm leaving it at 100% (or close to that) in the wheel base, and generally set up the gain I want in game.

I'm getting a DD2 and I'm not sure if it mounts the same as the DD1, but they look identical and I'd imagine have the same mounting. When mounting the DD1 to the Apex Wheel Stand, do you remember how many bolts actually fit into the DD1 from the wheel stand? I look at the plate, and it looks like only 2 bolts will make it in, which I wonder if it's enough. If this video is accurate, and my DD2 fits the same way the DD1 did in this video, I'm guessing it won't be that big of a deal, since I don't plan on using that much force. Hopefully the channel operator still monitors this video.

sure, the channel isn't that big yet, so I still read most comments ;-) There are 3 holes for mounting fanatec wheel bases, which is enough for the DD1 and DD2 (which are indeed mostly the same, except for 5 nm of peak torque difference).

@@TheSimChannel Thank you so much for responding. I can't wait to get my DD2 wheel, and to fit it in my Apex cockpit. Your channel was helpful in understanding that my GT omega wheel stand may be enough for my Fanatec wheel, especially given that they only sell DD1 and DD2 on the website, with the weaker Clubsport or CSL wheel bases not on offer anymore. Maybe it's just as well, though, as I would have settled for something in between the Thrustmaster T300RS and the Fanatec DD2 that I ended up getting, and maybe not end up having the experience I'll have once I finally get my DD2 in the mail. I don't have the space for a full cockput just yet, so I'm thinking of keeping the Apex but buying proper equipment. I haven't owned an SC2 personally, but there will be a way to mount it. You're going to need one of those brackets for bottom mounting and you may have to drill additional holes in your wheel deck. But that shouldn't keep you from getting the SC2 (which I think is a good decision!).

That is MUCH better than some of their other wheel stands without that updated triangulated frame. Their other stands without that triangulation aren't really even strong enough for CSL Elite base in my experience. The biggest issue I noticed with their previous stands is the amount of flex in the pedal plate. With the CSL Elite LC pedals the pedal plate would flex quite a lot. Good to see them make such a big improvement.
@TheSimChannel
@TheSimChannel 5 жыл бұрын
The pedal plate still flexes noticeably when you mount the pedals in the rearmost position (as I did). But that's less of an issue than the tipping over of the stand. I think if you mount it closer to the center of the (long) pedal plate, flex won't be much of an issue. But I don't know the stand all that well, I didn't test all possibilities. => as I said, not a review :-)
