I would like to add that I find Don Brewer of Grand Funk, Phil Ehart of Kansas, Jon Farriss of INXS and Carter Beauford of Dave Matthews Band to be exemplary percussionists.

Carl Palmer , Nick Mason , John Densmore and Roger Taylor should be on the list. Apart from that , is not a bad list considering it's Rolling Stone..

4:02 - #84 John Stanier from BATTLES. I have given you two songs by them that you reviewed and rated both an A+! So I can honestly say, you do love his drumming, as do I! 😁👍❤🥁

While no one can deny that The Beatles are considered the greatest rock band of all time, this doesn’t mean that Ringo Starr should receive the ranking Rolling Stone magazine has given him as one of the greatest rock drummers ever. Essential to the Beatles? Absolutely! But are way too many drummers who are better than him.

Some drummers i like should be on the list: - Roger Taylor (Queen) - Neal Smith (Alice Cooper Band) - Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heep) - Albert Bouchard (BOC) - Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) - Bob Siebenberg (Supertramp) - Simon Phillips - Mark Brzezicki (Big Country) - Ed Warby (Ayreon) - Steve Prestwich (Cold Chisel)

I skipped some of it, but here are recommendations of what you should hear! :) Mel Lewis - Naturally, with Mel Lewis on drums - on Telarc Digital (jazz genre), and Herbie Hancock - Headhunters, with Harvey Mason on drums - on Columbia (or Sony) label (funk/jazz genre). These albums have the most incredible SOUNDING drums on them that you are likely to hear!

Okay, first of all; I only knew 27 names in this list, I wasn't counting if I knew the band's names! Secondly; Danny Carey always goes to second place right behind the master: Neil Peart! And finally; Ringo should be higher just for the influence he had on so many artist with the short time he was in The Beatles!

Since you asked... I am not a fan of flashy, exhibitionist drummers, so among my favourites there are no Neil Pert, Carl Palmer (who's conspicuously missing in the list) and the like. A good drummer does not need to solo (although Bonham and Paice unfortunately were doing). For me the best drum solo in rock is Ringo’s in The End. What he “said” in those few bars is more than others manage filling a whole LP side with it. I would star with two names that are maybe not “drummers” in the strictest sense of the word, but more percussionists, and the ones that like to use found percussion: Jamie Muir (from Larks’ Tongues in Aspic’s King Crimson) and Angus MacLise (Velvet Underground’s original drummer, who played with the original Dream Syndicate/Theater of Eternal Music). Another percussionist that I would like to put forward is Evelyn Glennie. I would add some more jazz drummers. I think that Arthur “Art” Blakey / عبدالله ابن بوحینه deserves to be on the list, but also Joe Morello, the bloke that securely anchors Dave Brubeck’s Take Five. Then there is another female drummer, Viola Smith, nicknamed the female Gene Krupa, who continued drumming into her 100+’s. A couple of simple, non-complicating, drummers, who function perfectly in a band settings are the Stranglers’ Jet Black, Dresden Dolls’ Brian Viglione, and the Cramps’ Nick Knox (his exit from the band was the beginning of the group’s end). Then there are two psychedelic-era West Coast drummer that should be mentioned, Jefferson Airplane’s Spencer Dryden and the Doors’ John Densmore, the later undoubtedly jazz-influenced. Danny Taylor from the Silver Apples used to play melodic patterns on his drums, accompanying Simeon’s electronics. Robert Görl from Deautsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft plays synthesisers and drums at the same time. Live he pre-programs synths and plays drums. And finally, one that you surely never heard comes from Yugoslavia. It’s VD, the petite but energetic drummer of Šarlo akrobata. (The band has published the best album during the punk 1980s in Yugoslavia, Bistriji ili tuplji čovek biva kad... Worth listening!)

You did a lot better than me with recognizing faces. Two drummers I like from this list that were missing from the previous list were Al Jackson Jr and James Gadson. I agree with John Bonham as #1 for rock drummer. Any recommendations for Rush songs that highlight Neil Peart’s drumming and not solos. I would have Nicko McBrain on my own list. Still no room for John Densmore and Stephen Morris.

keith moon over Neil Peart? jokes. No 1 and no 2 are Neil and John. You pick the order, but they are 1 and 2 in my book. And if you speak all-rounder than it's Neil, that's why he's number 1 for me, the man was a genius, lyrically and musically.

Let me just say that, even though I haven’t watched the video yet, I am betting Josh Dunn isn’t on the list. But he should be…… drummer with the band Twenty one pilots- only a duo so he’s half the band. Fantastic drummer, you should check them out. (Now that I have seen the list, I feel Dunn is certainly better than a lot of them, could come in around the 50 mark)

I would have put Jeff Porcaro way higher. I think we take him for granted considering the number of songs and albums he's played on. He's part of my big question about Toto: you can only pick only one great musician from that band-who is it and why not the others?

Again, what is the criteria? Greatest meaning what? These are definitely all great drummers but to put together a list of 100,… you might as well put together a list of 300 or 500. For me, it’s essential that they be drummers that are playing exactly what is needed for the music that their band is doing. This would place Ringo much higher on the list. Like it or not folks. This is what is important. And Peart should be higher. These guys are a great example of what I’m talking about. I love them both and they both fit in with their bands perfectly as absolutely essential pieces. You can say apples & oranges but from this standpoint, they are both perfect. Since this is my main criteria as a drummer myself, I will immediately add Stuart Copeland who pretty much stands alone and fit perfectly with the two other members of the Police. Zero argument with Bonham but I would add that for me, he was the main ingredient. I also need to add the “Great” Paul Thompson from Roxy Music. Love Bill Ward…… ok, I’ll stop now.
