I was in San Diego for work on the morning of September 11th, 2001. I was due to return home to Kentucky that evening but all air travel was shut down. I waited a couple of days to see if I could get a flight, but it was still shut down. I looked into renting a car but by then every single rental in southern California was spoken for, so I went to a local car lot. I wound up buying a 1986 Porsche 944 for $2300; it was a 5 speed manual. I drove it more than 2000 miles back home over the next 3 days, and I kept driving it for another 10 years until someone plowed into me from behind, destroying it. I loved that car! Once I had to replace the starter on it, my dad and I spent 4 hours doing so. Two hours off, two hours on. Was ugly but it was a great memory of doing something with my dad whom I lost 6 years ago.

Reminds me of the early eighties, when car stereos were beginning to be a real integral part of the automotive experience. I tried so many different head units, equalizers and speaker/amp combinations that I finally went into the business myself, in order to get discounts on everything. A bonus was that I became really skilled at installing, and customization, not just on my own car, but my friends cars , too. The good old days! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

There is an amplifier in the floorboard on the passenger side. Pull back the carpet and there is a wood floorboard. Under that is an amp that is very small. It could help to replace or clean the amp down there. I had an 87 944S ut it should be the same. If it is the stock head unit.

One problem is that the new speakers are probably way lower in sensitivity than the original factory paper cone jobs, so the puny 5 watts of the Blaupunkt head unit will have a tough time driving them. You can hear how it clips when you turn it up. It also looks like it's a two channel head unit driving through a separate fader knob, so the load seen by the head unit from the paralleled speakers will be super low impedance.
@sashavrabac64392 жыл бұрын

For the dirty pots on the radio, you need a can of Deoxit Fader. Just a little shot will clean and lubricate them fully restoring them to new condition. To do it right, you want to pull the radio and remove the cover so you can access the rear of the potentiometer. But you can give a little spray at the shaft, and it'll get in there and work its magic.

Another thing if the sound is loud enough now add a small powered sub and it will add enough bass to really balance it out and give some decent enough low end. I got a little suit case sized thin 10 inch bass link box with a passive radiater built in and with a decent aftermarket radio and no extra amps it has really nice clean bass compared to just the 6x9 speakers. If you're going to immediately sell it off maybe not a great upgrade but if you want to keep it around or give it a friend or family a worthwhile upgrade to improve the balance of the cheap system. I had 2 12" subs in my Dart mounted in the lids on 5 gallon plastic buckets with a 150 a side amp and a passive bass equalizer in my Dart back in the day and it would pressurize the car if turned way up and had very clean bass. The alternator would charge on bass notes and shake the mirror. I had a 900 amp battery and a cop 100 amp alternator to keep up. The bucket s sat in the spare tire well and had trailer quick connects so I could grab the handles and remove them when I needed to use the trunk. 😉

Just did my 2001 4 door blazer. Yes I had a few mistakes. The front door speakers was simple. 6.5" mounts and using a spacer bolted right on in. Now I didn't realize it. After I ordered the speakers it came with a mini catalog that showed the same speakers but not as deep. So If I would have got that model. I would not have needed a spacer. But it was no issue Even with the spacer. Plenty of room behind the front door panels to fit them. The 2nd mistake an argument was the back door speakers. They are actually 5.x" something not 6.5" like I ordered. The surprised included spacer ring was not doing the job. Lucky an audio shop in ton had large thick spacers. Using this and a heavy duty metal strip. I was able to put 2 screws from the adapter ring into the mount and one more screw in it. This gave a total of three screws and sturdy enough to mount the speaker. Once again plenty of room behind the door panel. But now I know why on you tube and forums why I couldn't it was hard to find an agreement on what size fit. Including more than one post saying just pull the door panel off and look. It also doesn't help companies was trying to sell the complete kit. Baskets and such. When say for the front. You didn't need it or you just needed a spacer.

To my experience this old high-end head units are quite cabable, especially if you replaceme the 30 yo speakers. However, it's actually the cassette adapters which are mostly junk and prevent this systems from performing. The only bluetooth adapter I could buy on german Amazon sounds even worse than the older aux-adapters. I run a high-end Grundig unit in my old VW with upgrade Alpine speakers and mostly just listen to FM radio and my dad's hometaped audio cassettes from the early 90s.

For an even more elegant solution, there are the ones which plug in between the head unit and antenna and feed the signal from the BT in that way. Much better than the transmitters as they filter / block the radio signals when in operation, and aren't subject to interference as they don't actually transmit anything, but instead *convert* the signal from the BT input to an RF format that the radio tuner can use (much how RF modulators on vintage games consoles like the Atari 2600 allowed you to see Pac-Man on your TV, only with audio). For power you can hardwire them into the ACC position on the ignition so no need to remember to charge them or have USB cords hanging everywhere. It's a completely hidden setup. I'm planning on fitting one to my 1982 Volvo (I don't want to replace the original deck with a horrible modern flashy one with fake chrome, multicolored LEDs and an LCD display, as it would look really weird in the 240's oldschool black dash).

@@rich_edwards79 cool, could you share links to 1 or 2 that you would recommend?
@rich_edwards794 жыл бұрын
@@papitosabe hi, this is the one I'm looking at getting. Its pricey but not much more so than a decent replacement head unit, and has the benefit of hands free phone and voice controls (so you can use it to control Google Assistant as well as make and answer phone calls). Coupled with a good tablet or phone it gives 90% of the features of a touchscreen head unit without spoiling your classic car or offering a tempting target for thieves. It looks pretty straightforward to install too. The only extra features I wish it had were an aux input for devices such as portable DVD players without BT (but the Volvo's OEM deck can be adapted to take an aux in via the EQ DIN jack) and a way of adjusting the radio frequency it uses (as the deck only has 2 FM preset keys, and it would be nice to be able to tune it to a station I already use - they don't interfere as the module cuts the feed from the car's external antenna when switched on). But otherwise, this does seem to be by far the neatest and most integrated solution, and iSimple stuff seems to get good reviews: www.amazon.co.uk/iSimple-Hands-Free-Calling-Streaming-Smartphones/dp/B00FRU5UNA/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=antenna+bypass+fm+bluetooth&qid=1590745186&sr=8-5

When running speakers off a weak head-unit it's vital to consider the sensitivity or efficiency rating, i.e. how many decibels of sound per watt. These are low efficiency at 88db - you should've used 91db efficiency speakers as every 3 db = a literal doubling of sound.
