I'd recommend a few more clothes in bigger sizes that you can use for top layers. I find that having the top layers looser helps to trap more warm air near my body. If you're a skirts person, you might be surprised how warm your legs can be in a long skirt with thermals underneath. Also, I know you have long arms, but you will probably want some sleeves that actually reach your wrists, if you can find them.

Heyy Torontonian here!! When you're buying boots make sure they're waterproof, not just water resistant. Your feet will thank you on those cold wet snow days. Also, a lot of people mentioned layers and I totally agree. Just be mindful that buildings usually have the heat cranked up super high so make sure your layers are easy to shed in case you get too hot. I usually wear hoodies with a zipper under my parka. Lastly, make sure you always have hand cream and lip balm in your bag cause the air can get super dry especially in the dead of winter. Best of luck!!

You should see if there are any thrift stores in your area. You’ll be able to find some really high quality brands for so much less money. I don’t know if there’s a lot of thrifting in Jamaica but in Canada and the US there’s such an excess of clothing. You’ll even find brand new with tags if you don’t feel comfortable wearing used clothes. There’s also so much furniture and home decor. It would be a really fun video to make, or a whole series of decorating your new place! So happy to know you’ve got some warmer clothes now! I can’t wait to see your reaction to the snow!

Welcome to Canada Viv!! I would recommend that when you get your winter boots you go half a size up to fit some nice thick socks! (Or, easier, just make sure to wear thick socks on the day you try on boots to buy) Helps keep you warm obviously, but also will help prevent blisters as you break those boots in! Also, take care that you don’t only dress for the outside temp and end up sweltering indoors! Easy to remove layers are key. Another thing I will recommend that isn’t clothing related is a humidifier. Canada gets really really dry indoors in the winter with the heat on. I have to use a humidifier in the winter or suffer endless nosebleeds and itchy dry skin lol.

Welcome to Canada 🤗! This was a good haul. The key is layers so the thermal underwear was excellent. I'd say you should add some cute long and short cardigan sweaters that you can layer on top of the turtlenecks and v-necks if necessary. Some thick thermal socks and really good boots. Depending on where you are and if you will not have a car, you could also get some hand warmer packs. You can activate them in your gloves or pockets for added warmth. They even have rechargeable electric ones. Hats dont always work for big hair so some ear muffs or a winter headband with your jacket hood would also be good. 🤗.

Hi! I’m from Manitoba, Canada. I don’t shop at Shein, but it looks like you founds some good thermals and long sleeves. Some of my recommendations is to change your layering depending on what you are doing. If you will be doing lots of walking outside or using public transit, I’d definitely layer with your thermals. If you are going to be inside for the most part of your day, you may not want to use the thermals if it is very warm inside the buildings or if you’ll be walking inside a lot (I just get sweaty from that). The important thing about layering is that you have the ability to take them off to accommodate your changing environment (going from outside/ -20 to inside +19), the tricky thing bout thermals is they can become too hot and it is harder to take them off. I recommend you get a fleece vest or a sweater vest to wear under your jacket and over your shirt. I also recommend getting multiple types of gloves/mitts (you can get more scarfs too). They are really easy to lose, and some warmer days you don’t need the super thick ones. You can get thin and stretchy gloves for cheap at the dollar store or Walmart that you can wear underneath cuter knit mittens. Also get at least one pair of “insulated mittens” with a “cold rating”, just like you have for your jacket. For boots, you really want a well insulated pair, also with a “cold rating”. Keep in mind that it can get slippery with ice, so bottom grip is important, and a little waterproofing is good for when the sidewalks get slushy from the sand and salt they put down to melt ice. Keep in mind the extra room you might need if you wear thicker socks. You need, need some ear warmers (you can get fleece headbands that go all the way around your head, or ones that are like a horseshoe shape that sit on top of your head to cover your ears. The cold wind will hurt the inside of your ears and give you an earache. You can also use a long scarf to wrap around your head and neck if you can’t find a hat that works with your hair. Last, but not least, some warm socks. You can get thick cotton socks and the men’s section usually has thicker ones. You can also get socks with a “wool-blend” which will keep your toes warmer. Good luck! If you need any store/shopping recommendations, let me know 😊

Layers, layers, layers!! You need to be able to remove some layers while inside( ex in class) but will want to put on layers before going outside. Wool specifically merino wool is very soft and insulating, it’s great for hats or base layers etc. also for at home a heated blanket, nothing better to curl up with on the couch. Also thermal socks, once again wool. Is best, say away from cotton in the winter.

Layering is your friend. And not just shirts and long underwear. I've layered coats when the wind off the Lakes gets cold enough. Size up for top layers. Also, wool is fabulous. Thrift stores are great places for finding heavy wool sweaters without paying heavy prices. Don't forget ear coverings. Cozy knee socks under your trousers are good to layer without having to wear a full set of long underwear. Plus, if you get warm inside, you can push them down. Good luck! A first real winter is shocking. ❤

My typical outfit to sit at my desk at home during winter... 2 camisoles, a t-shirt, a thick cardigan sweater, a pair of silky pajama pants underneath regular pants, 2 pair of socks and sherpa slippers. Oh, and a scarf and sometimes gloves...lol Then topped off with a sherpa throw. Layers are your friend. Remember to have fun and make memories!

as someone who also went from a warmer area to colder i can say its true, its all about layers layers layers. however those layers dont have to be long sleeved winter layers, i wear the same base layers summer-winter, just add things on top as it gets colder. so wear tank tops/camis and legging/tights as the base and build on top. in the house the next layer is t-shirts/long sleeves/ sweater shirts/vests and skirts/shorts/jeans/sweatpants. then if you run outside for a bit or sit down for a while put on sweaters/pullovers/cardigans/dress. when you leave you should have jackets, a thin one thats wind and water proof, your thick winter coat, and a long coat to cover your legs, choosing one thats best for you at the moment. this allows you to take off and put on layers as you choose when appropriate, wearing warmer pieces as it gets colder. the reason to do that is because you dont want to sweat, if you get too wet from being too warm and cant get inside and change clothes there is a chance of getting too cold and dying, so its important to remove layers when you sweat. accessories are also important, after keeping your core (torso) warm the extremities are the next important (hands, feet, head/face/neck). this can be done with hats/scarves, gloves, and warm shoes; however gloves and warm shoes arent always an option/good enough, so i would also get wrist and leg warmers, as they can look nice and accessorize, while also keeping you warm. lastly get some throw blankets for the couch and where ever you regularly sit down, and a fluffy robe to wear around the house with fluffy slippers/socks. if in doubt remember--- base layer(natural fibers/sweat wicking) -- middle warm fluffy layer(s) -- outer (wind and water proof) layer. if still cold add a layer to the torso and extremities.

Yes, do not do thermal underlayers!!! That is a big mistake. A good cotton cami and build on that. Plus, you are in T.O. it does not get that cold there, and you are inside more than out. Base layers close to skin, all outer layers loose. Plus, you might run hot, so you won't need more than that.

Coming from someone living here from childhood who still hates the cold and wet season, I would recommend finding a good thrift shop. You need heavier garments . Not for style but for comfort and protection. It’s not the cold that’s always the problem. It’s the wind chill and being wet that’s a different kinds of discomfort. Get wool socks and mittens, a tam scarf . Much bigger items to layer cardigan sweaters vest. Winter will feel like 6 months. Welcome to Canada. I know with school you don’t want to spend too much because cost of living is already expensive

As someone from sweden I recommend clothes that you can layer up with in the morning when it’s usually the coldest during falldays so you can take layers of as it becomes warmer during the day. I also saw someone talk about buying tops little on the larger side so you can put them over other tops. Oversized cardigans & sweaters are your best friend during fall & winter because you can put alot of layers under them. Also if you can find it, there is these type of overskirts that works like a jacket for your legs (but they look like a skirt) when you wanna be cute & wear skirts but its cold, windy & wet outside, you just put on the overskirt & bam your legs ar protected from the cold. I have had collegues that swear by those overskirts & say that they are great.

As a fellow Caribbean girl I'm not a big fan of layering, so I usually just make sure my coat is solid and just wear one layer below. I kinda prefer to do my winter shopping in-store so I know how thick or thin my sweaters are when I buy them. Fave affordable places are H&M, Forever21 (inside Urban Planet), Winners (for some things), Ardene and even Walmart.

Michigan gal here. We get similar weather as Canada. Your clothes look great on you. Shein clothes all seem a little thin to me for your first winter here, but you have layers so fingers crossed. Get some thermal socks and some good waterproof boots and you should be okay. Meanwhile, don't be shocked if you see native folks wearing shorts with a sweatshirt while there's a foot of snow on the ground. I had a friend who worked for a short time in Antarctica and didn't always bother putting on a jacket while moving between buildings because he was born and raised in Michigan. Meanwhile, his coworkers were all freezing in parkas. LOL Use LOTS of lotion on your skin. (I use Vaseline on my hands and feet at night.) Central heating really dries out the skin and hair. Get an easy-to-clean to clean humidifier for your bedroom. The moisture will make the room feel less drafty and help you breathe at night. You got this! Take care and learn a bunch at school. 🥰

Omg loved this vid. Glad you have a winter coat. Id check out a Salvation army if one is close by you for other great and cheap cheap quality options. You never know what this winter will bring haha. A second winter coat or warm raincoat, idk those oversize knit sweaters and also wool socks may go a long way for those crazy spells when mother nature flexes. No social etiquette on thermals haha. What a good selection! It should do the trick that sweater with the fleece will keep you warm if you experience a black out(a sleeping bag will keep you warmer then a blanket). When looking online for a hat you can get a beanie (for stretch) and trapper hat (for warmth). A good novelty is a Christmas sweater. Make sure its lined and the sleeves are not tight.

Greetings from northen Sweden, I would advice you to pick up warm house slippers or thick socks. Trying to relax at home with cold feet sucks. And you cannot have to many scarves and shawls. Different kinds of gloves are also pretty nice. The cheap stretchy finger gloves are a nice allrounder and can be worn under mittens if it is horrible outside. And they make ones that works with touchscreens too! But a pair of lined winter gloves are pretty much a staple for me. They are warm but allow you some dexterity, removing mittens to do something is a winter horror 😱 One thing to note is that smartphones do not always do all that well in the cold, ca -25 c. It has happened on a couple of phones that the screen stops responding if I keep the phone in an outer pocket. As it warms up it works again, but it always happens at the worst possible moments. Laptops seems fine, but I have never tried keeping them on outside in that kind of cold.

Welcome to Canada 🇨🇦- I hope your first winter is wonderful (and warm!😁)- some suggestions- earmuffs- Mark’s has some that go around the back of your head, at neck level - this may work better to avoid destroying a hairstyle. A toque (aka a beanie) will likely flatten your hair big time. You may be able to use earmuffs and the hood of your coat to keep wind out, if you have a way to tighten it - loose hoods get blown back in wither winds. Anywhere they put salt on roads and sidewalks (Ontario, Quebec, Maritime provinces, probably B.C.) leather boots are a bad idea - salt will destroy them. (They put salt down to melt snow and ice, but it doesn’t work below-10 C, so it’s not used much in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, NWT, Yukon, Nunavut) You want ugly, clunky-looking waterproof boots with thick treads, and you want toe room - tight boots mean cold feet. Joe Fresh has good, thick cotton socks - I think they’re men’s, but they’re warm, and I wear them all winter. Don’t worry too much if it’s ‘men’s’ or ‘ladies’, just buy what works and is comfortable. Get your toque, mitts, etc., now - stores bring this stuff in in September, and by now it’s picked over and on sale. By the time you really need it, there won’t be much to choose from. Value Village is a chain of thrift stores that will have second-hand stuff, and therefore much cheaper. They have taken out their change rooms, though, and you can only exchange (no refunds), just fyi. They also treat their clothing with highly fragranced stuff, so avoid if strong fragrances bother you. Other thrift stores may have change rooms. I think thermals can be worn as outer wear, people certainly do when skiing, but you may find they’re cold that way, because the outer layer is usually made of some kind of slippery material that seems to draw the cold when worn on top. The very best of luck with your studies!

As someone who moved from a hot climate to a cold climate many years ago, I do have some advice/info you might find useful (while trying not to just repeat what everyone else has been saying already). Everything you showed in this video (except the snow coat at the end) looked like fall weather clothes to me, even the stuff you said you would probably save for the winter when it's colder. I don't know what part of canada you're in though, so I of course can't say for sure, but I think you'll need warmer things for the snow. I saw a few people talking about layers, and oversizing, and thought I would mention the ideal is to oversize OUTER layers, but keep your underlayers at normal sizes. When layering for cold weather, your best insulation is actually going to come from the pockets of warm air you have between layers! That's why thermal underwear is usually tight/fitted, but sweaters and coats trend towards being baggy! And you'll want to be extra sure your under layers are a bit more breathable, or moisture wicking, because sweating can give you a chill! Wool is a great material because it stays warm even when it gets wet, that's why it's good for socks (sweating in your boots isn't always avoidable), and why it's a lifesaver once it starts snowing and sleeting. Scarves are not just for your neck, but also to protect your face! Covering your nose with your scarf, or wearing a mask, will really help you not only stay warmer, but also keep from getting sick as often, because breathing in the cold air weakens your front line immune response to respiratory illness! Also with how dry and cold it gets, your lips, your nose, and even your ears can get chapped, crack, and bleed. Don't be afraid to put chapstick or vaseline on your nose, lips, and ears if you have to go out when it's cold and windy!

As a person living in a nordic country I'm just repeating many other people from these comments and say layering AND choice of materials are your best friends during winter. You want to wear stuff that breaths so sweat/ moisture can get away and not stay on your skin and all those layers that trap the air in between as an insulation. Synthetic materials are often the worst at least the cheap kinds. I also recommend getting a solid wind/ rain proof jacket and pants that you can wear on top of what ever clothes you are wearing.

If there's any resale or good thrift shops in your area, keep your eyes open for merino wool items. Sweaters, hats, thermal underwear, mittens, glove liners, socks, etc that fabric does it all. Merino is the siftest & least itchy of the wools and it breathes a bit better than synthetic fabric so your layers are more forgiving but still warm when you need warm. Merino can also be worn multiple times without stinking because wool has natural antimicrobial properties. It just needs to be hung up & aired out and doesn't need to be washed with every wear. It is expensive new, but can be a great deal used or even from eBay.

Hi from northern Canada! I always swear by cardigans and sweaters with zippers or buttons, anything I can use to layer with (and which I can take off when I get inside!) A light shirt with a zippered sweater and my parka, that way I don't melt when I'm inside, or freeze outside. Another thing is warm socks and waterproof boots! If your feet get cold or wet, your body temperature can drop pretty fast, and it makes it hard to get warm again. Also seconding the advice for hand cream and lip palm, unless you want to end up rocking some seriously lizard-y skin. Oh! And sunglasses! Especially when it gets snowy, the reflection of the sun off the snow can really hurt your eyes. Good luck!! ❤ edit: I forgot one thing! Warm scarves are a really nice way to add some colour to your outside clothes. Sometimes it gets a bit blah and monochrome when everything gets covered up by your parka, so a cute hat or a scarf can brighten it up!

Welcome back to Canada 🤗 Every part of Canada is different when it comes to winter, but it seems like you’re in the right track, id stick to what you have for now and then slowly collect more if needed as the days get colder. A nice oversized hoody to wear on your “at home” days is definitely something I think you should add to your closet as well as thicker socks, your toes will get cold first, and while the neck warmer isn’t your vibe I think it’s cute, not to mention, in Canada we don’t always dress to look good so long as we are warm. Hi Vivian, not as cold as Canada in the UK but when you said about the hat, as a big haired girl myself they pop off my head unless they are really big and your hair can be a great way to keep warm so maybe get a few woollen headbands or as someone else said earmuffs looks great with hair down curled. Good luck with your new adventure! ❤

Be careful buying things from shien yhe quality isn't always the best. For your clothing and boots go at least one size up to layer up underneath and have extra breathing space. Do the same for your winter jackets also. For your boots make sure the sole has good grip for those slippery days and is waterproof not water resistant. Also, get taller boots since its your first winter, shorter boots may not be tall enough if you dont drive. But welcome to Canada 🇨🇦.

Start thin! You will be supriced over how much a normal pair of pantyhooses can insulate! If you go full out ”thick and warm” from the start chances are that it wont be enough when the real cold hits. Also its the air trapped between the layers that keeps you warm so dont wear the clothes too thight, that will actually have the oposite effekt.

...i'm just south from canada in new york..hopefully the winter won't be too terrible....but just in case.....layers layers layers....get more tights and socks....and as someone has already, said go up half size to accommodate wearing socks in your boots.....definitely make sure that you get another scarf or two to switch up.....and two pairs of gloves, and ear muffs...i hope that you will have a wonderful experience studying abroad.

My part of Ontario (near Kingston) has had a really warm fall so far. Which I am loving!! I've heard it may be a mild winter as well. If that brings you any comfort lol It might be mild! Edited to add: do you have warm socks? Warm toes = warm body.

These items look good to me just get a good winter coat. If you not like standing outside you should be good long as you have a good coat that covers your clothes. I live in Wisconsin it gets cold. I think coats are better investment because once you get in the building you should be fine.

im not sure where you are in canada but if your in ontario you should visit some of the natural hair salons around it be interesting to see your opinion on the differences. i agree with all the comment layers are key. it usually is the coldest before it snows after it snows its not awful. stock up on lotion and lip chap. thick socks and mittens are essential.

Get some more jeans a size or two up from what you normally wear, so you can layer. And nice top layer shirts too. I'm sure you can get away with wearing the thermal tops as regular tops, but definitely get more layering pieces. Canada is a different kind of cold. You're gon a need it. And a good couple puffer coats or a good parka with some water resistant material for the snow.

Viv that thick thick thermal is gonna be worn by November if you make it that long. Make sure you wear a vest under everything to add layers even under those snug shirts. And all those snug shirts are only an under layer you need to wear the looser tops over and then your great coat. Lol

Get yourself a nice pair of Sorel boots. They'll last forever; and they're made in Canada! Also, North America is the land of athleisure wear. I'm pretty sure folks are wearing thermals to the office these days. Wear thermals wherever you want, as long as they don't make you too sweaty.

I'm in Winnipeg or Winterpeg if you prefer, and it is snowing here right now with between 7 - 12cm expected by morning. Make sure that you have proper boots that have a really good traction on the sole of them. I really want you to love Canada, Viv!

as everyone else has said -- layers layers layers. some one else mentioned going from freezing cold outside to warm inside is part of the reason why layers are important. You don't want to be all sweaty in your thermals all day if you're spending most of your time on public transit (which can be either freezing or sweltering in the winter because their temperature controls are not great) and in school. loose clothing (as long as it's not so loose that the wind finds it's way in) is often warmer than tight clothing. you're an engineer, do some materials science research, some materials are going to feel warmer than others. Wool is great for winter - unless wool makes you itchy, but you can feel warm in wool even if it gets wet. There are probably different kinds of wool blends or polyester blends that are great for staying warm, read the reviews. don't cheap out on footwear - cold wet feet while you're sitting in class all day will be miserable. get some good socks and good waterproof boots. Toronto tends to have wet slushy winters, it's hard to stay warm if you get wet, so waterproof outerwear is important. also I wouldn't go too fancy with boots because they use a lot of salt on the roads and sidewalks here - salt is terrible for nice leather boots, don't feel bad getting something that looks a little more "industrial" if it's going to keep you warm. Also, bring an extra pair of socks with you if you're going to be out all day, being able to change into warm dry socks if you've been soaked makes a big difference. I am also really curious how you're going to do your hair in winter. wear it big for natural warmth (big fluffy hair traps a lot of heat as long as it's not too windy out). hats may be be compatible with some hair styles. ear muffs might be a good option. also curious to see how your hair reacts to cold dry winter air.

That jacket looks way too cold for Canada. You most definately need a really good pair of winter boots. You might need thermo shell pants that you take off when you get to school/work. I never been to Canada, but I live in Sweden so I do know cold weather is a thing.
