I'm not sure how I feel about this. If he refused to do his job, he would be killed or be imprisoned with those whom he was ordered to guard. He was young, stupid and blindly following orders like much of us do. Then again, he never refused to guard and likely didn't say anything. Did he have a moral compass or was he forced to ignore it? Being an SS is not the same with german military. You need to apply ,go through a complete medical check up, and fit to certain strict criteria. He knew what he signed up for. ( I read some even look for a recommendation letter to be an SS) they took pride in it.

If covering the face was truly needed, why not give him a mask and eye glasses or something? Why have him holding a folder? Let him see what's going on. Let him have a look at the people bringing him to justice. He's probably not wearing his hearing aides and now he can't see the people there due to the folder, so to him, it's not even happening.
