WW2 in Estonia - 1944

As part of the Second World war Estonia saw combat in 1944 between the Soviet Red Army and German Wehrmacht. This video explains the main events - the intense fighting on the Panther line around Narva, the battle of the Tannenberg line, the Tartu offensive and finally battles on the Estonian islands during the Moonsund operation.

Just a small fact about the Tannenberg battle: Both the red army and the german army had forcefully recruited estonian men to fight and right over in that battle these estonian soldiers fought each other. Really tragic stuff.

If Poland had been defeated in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-21, the Soviets would have conquered all of the Baltic States, including Estonia, and forced to communism. Indeed, the Polish victory in the Polish-Bolshevik War had European impact. According to the British politician and diplomat Lord D'Abernon, who was part of the Interallied Mission to Poland in 1920, during the Polish-Bolshevik war, the 1920 Battle of Warsaw was one of the most important battles in world history because as he said "had the Battle of Warsaw ended with a Bolshevik victory, it would have been a turning point in the history of Europe. As there is no doubt that with the fall of Warsaw, Central Europe would have been left open to Communist propaganda and Soviet invasion." Conquered Poland should serve as a red bridge to conquer all of Europe! This view is also confirmed by the order of Mikhail Tukachevsky, commander of the Western Front of the Red Army, which he wrote in July 2, 1920: "The fate of the world revolution will be decided in the West. The way to set the world on fire leads through the corpse of white Poland. On our bayonets we will bring happiness and peace to the toiling masses of mankind. To Warsaw!" Tukhachevsky also boasted that his men would be "galloping through the streets of Paris before the summer was out." The communist propaganda called free Poland white Poland. The term whites were used to designate anti-communists. But the Polish victory prevented setting the world on fire by communists. What is also worth noting the fact that if Poland had been conquered by the communists, the Baltic states would have been conquered too. Poland was therefore allied with Latvia in this war. With these additional resources from these conquered countries, the communists planned to advance further into the west. In various European countries at that time there were strong communist movements that would have supported the communists in their advance. Poland and some few others European countries were not infected by the red virus. In Poland the overwhelming majority of the population was anti-communist. But Poland was the absolute exception in Europe! So these are examples of communist successes outside the Bolshevik state at the time of the Polish-Bolshevik war. The Hungarian Soviet Republic was the communist state of Hungary from 21 March 1919 until 1 August 1919 (133 days). Until the anti-communists prevailed and abolished this Soviet republic. The other communist republics and communes have survived just as short as the Hungarian Soviet Republic but that makes it clear that there were strong communist influences throughout Europe. Like in Hungary during the German November Revolution, the communist Karl Liebknecht proclaimed the communist republick in Germany on November 9, 1918. But the communists' seizure of power then failed, although later there were repeated attempts by the communists to gain power in Germany or parts of Germany. Like with the Bavarian Soviet Republic wich was a short-lived communist state in Bavaria during the riots of 1918-19 in Germany. Then there was another attempt by the communists to come to power with the Bremen Soviet Republic wich an, short-lived state in Germany, existing for 25 days in 1919. The communist Spartacist uprising with the goal of an all-German Soviet Republic were armed battles in Berlin from 5 to 12 January 1919. The Finnish Socialist Workers' Republic more commonly referred to as Red Finland, was a proclaimed Finnish communist state that ruled parts of the country during the Finnish Civil War of 1918. Another example of an attempted communist takeover of power in Europe was then the Alsace-Lorraine Soviet Republic of 1918 in France. The Limerick Soviet was one of a number of declared Irish soviets that were formed around Ireland 1919. The Slovak Soviet Republic was a short-lived Communist state in southeast Slovakia in existence from 16 June 1919 to 7 July 1919. Commune of the Working People of Estonia existed from 29 November 1918 to 5 June 1919. The Latvian Socialist Soviet Republic of 1918. Moreover, there were also attempts by the communists to take power in other parts of the world! Dockers in Gdansk(Danzig) and London wich were sympathizers of the Bolsheviks also refused to load the support supplies for the fighting Poles against the Bolsheviks. Since the communists had enough supporters all over Europe after the desired victory against Poland the communists would have in Europe either provoked revolutions through agitators or they would have intervened militarily. If the communists had conquered Europe, which was by far the most economically important continent at the time, they would have had a good chance of "exporting" communism worldwide as well. That this is not an exaggeration can be seen by comparing the strategy of the communists after World War II. Even in these later times, communism was "exported" to countries around the world, and as a result there were countries around the world ruled by communist dictatorships. After 1945, as in 1919, the communists had the goal of a world completely dominated by communism. The goal was that virtually every country would become communist. That is why the Polish victory of 1921 definitely had not just a European impact but also a global impact.

The Battle of the Tannenberg Line is a major Eastern Front battle I have never heard of before. Thank you for another detailed and informative video. A single map can convey pages of history. Animated maps show a whole extra level of detail. I suppose this type of warfare had rhythm: days of rapid movement, weeks of static warfare, days of rapid movement, weeks of static warfare. Your animation shows this in a way that non-animated maps can't.

Perfect release timing before my upcoming first trip to Estonia this Summer 2022... will try to go to Lagedi! Nice video in any case, as always! Perhaps some of the units, like Nord and Nederlands and the Estnische 1. could have deserved a slightly different colour to differenciate from the Heer, even very subtly if you didn't want to have it too different: like pale gray for them and very pale gray for the others (no need to paint them as black as your armoured units of course)... but it seems like it was a deliberate choice of yours; fair enough: you're the boss! :)

It's interesting to see the parallels between the german and soviet invasions of Estonia. Seems like the main factor that made both offensives such a slog was the easily defensible terrain which shuts down any attempted blitz through the country.

As of course Estonia would be annexed by the Soviets for the rest of the cold war. Very fortunate you were able to make it out, many weren't so lucky...Eastern Europe was doomed at that point. And the yoke of communism and the iron curtain would fall upon that whole side of Europe, and indeed half the world. The history of eastern Europe has no happy ending...just one tragedy after another.

I tell this story a lot but my great grandmother was Estonian and worked for the red cross. she remembered when the soviets first took over the country, she told my grandfather that no one knew what happened. one day they were Estonian the next they were soviet. She wouldn't talk a lot about what happened during the soviet occupation, but her mother, father, and siblings were all taken away, I do not know why she wasn't. When the Germans took over her town she volunteered as a nurse and worked on the front lines. she hated the soviets so much and feared what they might do to her she left with the German army and later married a German (her first husband). She came to Canada with my great aunt and her first husband but he would die shortly after and she would later marry my great grandfather and have my grandmother. She drank heavily during her later years and would only talk about the war when drunk, unfortunately she died before I was old enough to even care about her story. she never stepped foot in Estonia after world war 2 and never found out what happened to her family. She said to my grandpa the only people that she respected in the war was the Finnish and that she hated both the Germans and the soviets but worked with the Germans because they would protect her from the soviets who she hated more. She was a tough woman but would cry every remembrance day when she thought no one was home, my grandma came home early one day to find her crying in front of the TV holding a picture of her family. she was just one of many who were forgotten about after the war, and made even worse because she came from a country that didn't existed after the war.

They would use it as a flank to encircle Red Army after Battle of the Bulge but the Army Group Center was destroyed and most of beachlines was taken too fast. They had no choices but to stayed there

Who is the enemy? There is no happy ending for Eastern Europe by this point... They had but one chance during their war for independence in 1919 to march on petrograd and defeat the bolsheviks during the civil war when they were still weak. However it would all be lost less than 2 decades later because they failed to push their advantage when the reds were still weak. 30,000 reds then, now over half a million less than 2 decades later with no hope of stopping them. A lesson in stopping dictatorial regimes before they have a chance to arise. A lesson the world unfortunately learnt too late, only after the second world war.

The Soviet Union which occupied Estonia built bunch of factories, sea port, provided some competitions in Tallinn during 1980 Olympics, and Estonian population was growing till 1990, when Estonia became "free" (free to become dependent to "Brussels"). And last 30 years Estonian population just deteriorates and citizens move to live and work in other western parts of Europe. Funny people. And they call us occupants.
