This is a recipe for an Authentic New York Deli Potato salad. This is how the potato salad was made over 100 years ago and how it is still made today in many New York and Long Island delicatessens. The secret to its wide appeal is in its simplicity.

My grandmother passed away a while ago and you and her share an accent. Listening to you talk is like going back in time and listening to my own grandmother talk to me and teach me how to cook as a child. I have so many amazing memories waking up to the smell of amazing food in the mornings, I would stand in the kitchen and she would just turn around, smile and ask me if I wanted to learn to make it myself. I always said yes. I would wake up at 4am to help on thanksgiving and she would always brag to her friends how I was the only other person in our family who was allowed to touch the turkey and the gravy because no one else made it as good as I did. She left behind all of her handwritten recipes to me on her passing. We shared a deep bond when it came to food and hospitality. I miss her every day. Her potato salad is basically the same with some other additions. I'm going to go out and buy the ingredients and make for dinner tonight.

My parents had Fuller brushes, I still have a few! People may not believe that your brush is 50 years old but I can attest to that. My parents brushes look just as good now as they did when I was a kid. Of course I haven't used them very much in recent decades. I keep them for nostalgia. Things were made to last a long time in those days. And companies put their reputation behind their product. Most of that has disappeared these days, sad to say.

My mom had a Fullerbrush vegetable brush like yours except it had a brown handle. She also had a FullerBrush hair brush that she bought when I was about 4 or 5 years old. Fast forward 55 years. When she passed away, she still had the hairbrush and she had used it faithfully every day of all those years. They were built to last.

Thank you for the recipe and nostalgic info. When I was a kid we didn't have the internet- and wouldn't miss it back then- but we had so many other things. Like Grandma said, the Fuller Brush man, the Helms Bakery truck that would come down your street, tooting it's funny horn every morning selling wonderful bakery items. The Good Humour man selling ice cream was a treat that kids looked forward to during the summer months especially. We loved the music from the truck telling us that ice cream was on it's way. Times were good and not to be forgotten.

Your Aunt's recipe is quite different from my Grandmother's recipe. She passed away in 1972 but luckily she gave me a few of her recipes. Her's is 5 lbs of potatoes, cooked similar to what you showed, basically her recipe is the same as yours until you start adding the extra ingredients. Her's consists of potatoes (she favored red for this too), Hellman's mayonnaise, finely chopped celery, dried or fresh parsley, six hard boiled eggs, chop four and slice two for the top as decoration. It's a recipe that is requested on a regular basis. My Aunt Rita made her potato salad the same except she added 50/50 mayonnaise and sour cream.

So, basically u boil red potatoes for 25 min. let them cool, peel the skin, slice them in a pan. Grate onion over the top. Boil 2 c. cold water with 2 T. white vinegar till first boil only. Let cool. Mix some with mayonnaise to make creamy, then pour over potatoes. Super easy ! Can’t wait to try it! Thanks! 👍🌝

The story of the Fuller brush man, brought back memories. I’m 73 and remember him coming to the house. That was a time when they made things to last. I hope we have better made things. Not just gadgets, but refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers., nothing last today. My mothers refrigerator lasted 30 years. Best wishes ♥️♥️🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hi I enjoyed reading your comment and I agree with everything you said. It is so true today nothing is made to last and everything is not inspected like years ago. When you purchased clothes years ago it was sewn perfect. You would never find an imperfection. Glad you also remember the Fuller brush man. Thank you so much for watching and have a nice day❤️Grandma👩🏻

@@GrandmaFeral so nice reading your comment. My Mother Stitched clothing, in Boston, Massachusetts. It was mens uniforms. If I remember correctly Police and Firefighters. When we would go shopping down town Boston, she would show me what to look for in the clothing. The fabric, how the pattern was matched in the fabric. , how the seams were finished, the zippers stitched. Button holes and buttons secured. To this day I always look at the fabric, if it’s matched, sown well. Nothing like it use to be. I hope we get back to better quality clothes, shoes etc. Best wishes ♥️♥️🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

@@GrandmaFeral sorry I wanted to thank you for your video, and potato salad recipe. We had a great Jewish deli, in Chelsea, Massachusetts. My Dad would surprise us at midnight with corned beef sandwiches. He could only afford two, on his way home from work. Him and my Mom would share one, and three of us kids would share the other. They were piles high with beautiful corned beef, on a giant bulkie roll. What a treat. Wasn’t often, but loved when he did it. That Deli was there and I took my kids there over the years, until it closed. We so need these Mom and Pop, Deli’s. They were the best. I moved away from the area, was a small Deli here, but they too have closed. Best wishes ♥️♥️🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

I have those same bowls you used (green and white)...of course, I had to buy them at an antique shop and I really enjoy using them whenever I cook----Fuller still sells that brush if anyone wants one... This looks good and I would garnish with dill and I love how big the slices are----so many recipes out there look like mashed potato salad!

Made this tonight. Came out yummy but I tweaked the recipe a bit. Added 3 extra Tbsp sugar, 1 tsp salt, 4 extra Tbsp vinegar not to the pot but to the potatoes themselves when cut up. and had to boil an extra 5 min on high bc potatoes were still slightly crunchy inside. It had a nice authenic german potato salad taste in the end just the way I like it. Thank you for sharing again =)

I grew up on eastern Long Island, in rural potato country. We didn't grow potatoes, but we always had a 50 lb bag of them (eastern all-purpose white variety) in the basement, that Dad had traded a bushel or two of tomatoes (or peppers, eggplant, zucchini, etc.) for. I ate a LOT of potatoes --- and potato salad --- growing up!🥔🍅 Our typical recipe variant: chopped celery and onions, dressing of mayo, white vinegar, S&P, celery seed. To this I sometimes now add a good squeeze of sriracha.🌶️ Late in life, Dad came up with a new and very unexpected variant: he substituted fresh lime juice for the vinegar---sounds like a weird pairing, but it works! My uncle, who loved visiting New Orleans, made a southern potato salad version with a mayo/yellow mustard base, and I think onions (scallions?) and celery. Might have had relish in it, I don't remember any more, but it was good, too. Ooh, a Grandpa Feral visual perspective on the taste test! Neat touch!

@@GrandmaFeral The lime juice was a real secret ingredient-- gives the potato salad a little extra freshness you don't expect, and makes you wonder, 'Oh! What IS that? I can't tell, and I don't care. Yum!'😋
@patriciamorgan6545
@patriciamorgan6545 4 жыл бұрын
I use cider vinegar in my cucumber salad and in beet salad pretty much exclusively. Dad stuck to his white vinegar for his cukes, but it was too medicinal for Mom and I, as he used too much. We thought he might be doing that deliberately to keep the salad for himself!😉 (I like a lot of vinegar, too, but mine is more in balance with the other ingredients, and the cider vinegar gives it more complexity.) Mom loved making Waldorf salad, too, but I don't recall the dressing, other than it was very simple, probably little more than mayo. Maybe some lemon to prevent oxidation of the apples, a little S&P. I'll have to try that again come fall, see if I can work out her recipe from memory. Do you toast your walnuts? I don't remember us bothering.

I do have a suggestion for you! If you live anywhere the 'noxious invasive weed' garlic mustard* grows, you can pick the young leaves or flowers and chop them up for a seasoning, or add to sour cream or cream cheese for a spread, sauce, or dip. Like mustard, it is a member of the cabbage family, so it will not cause the same problems you have with the onion family. The flavor truly is a wonderful mix of mustard and garlic. It does not withstand long cooking, as the flavors are volatile, so cook it quickly or use it as a last-minute garnish when serving it in hot dishes like soups or omelets. There are a lot of recipes for it. It is a native plant in Europe, and we prize it highly. I'm a forager, so for me the best way to get revenge on a 'weed' is to eat it if you can. 💚 *Latin name: Alliaria petiolata www.ediblewildfood.com/garlic-mustard.aspx
