Any cooking video that gives the recipe right up front instead of stringing people along for views, deserves a thumbs up right away. It's one of those things that shows someone cares a little bit extra. I will be trying this very soon. I just got to the end and saw them toasted with butter and jam... Maybe sooner than I planned. This made me unexpectedly really sad! My grandma always said she won’t buy crumpets from the shops because they don’t taste right but nobody she knew had a recipe for them (a problem we literally cannot experience these days…). But she’d said on many occasions she still remembered what “real crumpets” tasted like from the bakery and wished she was smart enough to make and share them with us so we knew… she passed away years ago now but I stupidly got the idea, “I wonder if these crumpets are what grandma still remembers, I should make them for her.”, for a split second before remembering she’s gone. Sorry grandma would have loved to share some with you but I’ll still have to try it now :(

You are amazing, John! I was a flight attendant for 38 years and often flew to England. One things I’ve always missed since retirement 5 years ago was British crumpets. My husband loves KZbin and saw yours last night, asking me if I’d ever had crumpets. I said, “Yes and they’re wonderful”! I just tried your recipe and they are perfect! I made mine with Better Batter 1:1 gluten free flour since I’m intolerant. I added 3 extra Tbsp of water to my batter and proofed in the oven with the light on. They’re even better than I’d hoped!!! I can’t wait to make them next month with my 88 yr old mother who loves crumpets, too. I also love your warm cuddly Pooh voice. Who wouldn’t?

You mean English crumpets from England; or were your British crumpets from Wales or Scotland? Scotch whisky is from Britain and is British whisky, but it's made in Northern Britain, which is Scotland, so we call it Scotch whisky (note the spelling). I'm an Englishwoman from England, whereas a British woman who could also be Welshwoman or a Scotswoman. There are three countries in Britain, and four in the United Kingdom. England is not a sovereign country: it doesn't have its own government, nor its own King, but the UK does. The word united gives a clue to there being more than one country in the kingdom. Anything from England is precisely English, including me and my language. Simple.

About never buying another Crumpet again - you have THAT right! I bought one of those infrared temp gauges and never knew there was such a thing, now I won't cook without it. I make my Crumpets on a 12" Lodge cast iron pan I already had, but I did need to buy a set of Crumpet rings...I kid you NOT ~ I must have made 8-dozen since I started as I can't resist giving them away to my friend and her husband, and my son adores them with coffee in the morning, and of course I only get a few to myself, but I enjoy each bite I do get. @@Sushilover01 I do from time to time, but (mainly due to nostalgia I imagine) I usually buy the ready/tinned stuff. The two main Polish brands are Profi and Podlaski, both about same quality wise. They’re nothing special, and admittedly, they do look like wet cat food in the tin, however the flavour is very pleasant and there’s many types to choose from with anything from garlic to sun dried tomatoes as a “topping”. They’re also handy to have in your pantry as they’re very shelf stable and cheap so I usually just buy a dozen whenever I visit the Polish shop.

I saw this as a recommended video and I used to be a chef at restaurants and cafes in New Zealand back in the 90's and 2000's. I completely lost the love to cook, let alone bake for a few reasons but mainly 1 Head Chef that just took the fun away. However, seeing the sheer kindness and excellent recipe you made, well, it made me want to subscribe and try to get back into cooking something (I never imagined I could think that way again). I had flashbacks long forgotten of growing up in the early 80's cooking Pikelets and Pancakes with my Mum on a Saturday morning that had a similar recipe to this one in many ways was a nice surprise and good motivator, she would be happy. I buy crumpets too, but NOT any more thanks to you John!!! John, if you see this, I saw that you have attempted or have given a heart and a reply to more than 500 comments (I got tired looking further), that alone is something so beautiful in nature I was humbled. Be very proud of yourself for being so selfless and thank you for being an example of what I think is just pure kindness to all. :)

i live in NZ and grew up in the 70's and 80's, mum would buy them in the Autumn and Winter (now days they are available all year round) you can also use them in place of the toast for poached eggs or baked beans but memainly just used to have butter and vegmite on ours, very very hot from the toaster

During my childhood, I spent some scarce holidays in the north-eastern part of the UK, and I often heard the word "crumpet" being used in a pretty different context and meaning. I never understood that the name actually applied to this mouth-watering delicacy. I now also understand why they used the same name for the other "activity", more over I now understand why my mother doubled with laughter. One is never too old to learn. For certain I will make these for my grandchildren. When they are old enough, and I live long enough, I might explain the other meaning. Some things should never get lost.

John, not fair! I’m nice and warm in bed, about to go to sleep and I came across your video. Now I feel the sudden urge to get out of bed and make these delicious looking crumpets… Thanks very much!

I've been there. I got that t shirt. Many times, I've been lying in bed, and all of a sudden, a recipe will pop into my nut, and up and away I'll go 😅🤣😅. Good night, my friend 😴😉❤️

I made these and they were wonderful. I used canning rings for cooking the crumpets and they worked great. My favorite way to eat them was with butter and raw honey. So yummy!

John, I had a crack at making these crumpets, and all I can say is; the texture and look of these crumpets are similar to store bought crumpets. unfortunately, I made one minor mistake, which changed the flavour. This happened because was I forgot about the proving time and left the product for 3 hours. The only change flavour was the fermented taste. this wasn't overpowering at all. A good dollop of butter fixed that😂

Nice job, Bill. Yes, by going past the proofing time, will result in a denser crumpet. You gotta catch the batter at its bubbliest, which is around 1 to 1 and a half hours. But they'll get better with practice. Thanks for watching my friend ❤️ much appreciated.

Thank you, thank you, thank you 😭 I live in Rwanda and I miss crumpets so much. When I get back to the UK to visit, I stuff myself with buttered crumpets and blue cheese. You can't buy them here and I had no idea they were that easy to make - I'm going to give this a go!

Great recipe John. ( Did you realise that when you say add the salt it actually shows sugar on the screen - easily done 😊)

I love making crumpets! Takes me back to my childhood, where when he had time, my Granddad would come and make a batch for Mum. We'd have them with butter (whereas normally we'd have margarine to save money) and a cup of soup, or tea. Always a treat we looked forward to, on a cold day. I've never had them for breakfast though - might need to remedy that! I like them just with butter - I have tried other toppings, but always go back to my original love!
