Meet Lars and his majestic but very rotten wooden sailboat Vega. Lars has dedicated himself to saving this classic Yawl that is almost a 100 years old. Doing a full rebuild of almost every piece of wood and metal, Vega will be ready for another 100 years on the water.

You have been bitten by the bug! And this boat is now your mistress. But i do understand , & can appreciate your predicament. The restoration affliction can only be cured by work, heart ache, and of course money. ( But you love her & she knows it). You will bring her back to all she can be and what a beautiful boat awaits you when complete. Sail her far , sail her often and enjoy every minute in complete safety.She will repay you in ways you cannot imagine .My best to you for undertaking that project & all the best to you & your good ship. Sir. Be sure to use extreme amounts of epoxy on all your wood when you can get at it as she is being rebuilt. It will pay big dividends for longivity.

Yes* I wish you the best, as you set off on the long marathon race of repair and restoration. Do each day as they come, small steps, then everything falls into place! Tally ho!

What keeps a 100 year old boat to continue to grow old are the caretakers of said boat if not it becomes landfill so it does not matter how much of the wood is replaced

WOW,.......I worked in boat yards for forty years and can't tell you how many I've seen like you there. HINT; most fail because of lack of funding and materials......good luck

When life is powered by wooden dreams, there's little time for reality. Our 74 yo trawler keeps us pretty busy. 😉

Where is this shipyard? Any idea how to contact it? I will be starting a similar project on a 100 ft schooner but prices of dock and limited yards big enough to lift my boat are very expensive here in the USA

This is in monastir Tunisia. But availability of skilled workers is very limited and working and living standards are something completely different from the western world. Materials and labour are cheap though. But you have to fly in your experts to train workers like Lars has done.

It is definitely a special project! The owner isn’t too much into social media. But the links are in the description. I will try to do a follow up when the boat is in the water again!

How did this guy get the knowledge to work on this boat? Is he a carpenter/ship builder?

Lars has hired the help of a German expert in wooden boat building and restoration. Together with some local workers they are attacking this massive project.

Strange that it's big boat, but hardly standing height, Maybe the owner is over 2m tall? Is this shipyard in Turkey?
@Boatlifeisbest
@Boatlifeisbest 7 ай бұрын
The owner is about 1.78m. But the boat is about 100 years old so people used to be a lot shorter. The whole interior has been removed now to fix the boat so they will probably rebuilt it in another way.

Really thought this through>>? Done this before ? Spoken with those who have? Tally Ho for example has progressed so well because of the enormous amount of support people have contributed . Unless you have the wealth to make this restoration happen its in my opinion a very perilous endeavour . Please dont take my words personally i mean no disrespect . Just some free excellent unwanted advice from a nobody .

I see a lot of comments like this on every boat restoration video. Naysayers, pearl clutching. If the guy is enjoying what he is doing, great. Who cares about the money. If its not going to be a museum piece, throw some planks on, pack it with tar and rubber, and go sailing. People have sailed rocks lashed together with hope across the ocean. How is anyone ever to learn any type of craft if they don't get their hands dirty. Tally Ho is such a gatekeeping community they do a disservice to any craft learning in general.
@YTPartyTonight

@@jjSuper1 That's not really a fair or accurate to put that on the Tally Ho project. The recognition of the enormity of these projects isn't pearl clutching or gatekeeping, it is truthfully recognizing reality. When you say "throw some planks on, pack it with tar and rubber, that only expresses something about you, not the reality of anything else, especially what work that boat needs.
