My dad and I built a 17-foot wooden sailboat back in the seventies when I was a kid. (Correction: I watched him build and handed him the tools) He was a carpenter by training and had never built a boat before but decided to try it. He ordered some plans through the mail and went to work. We spent fifteen years sailing around the Chesapeake before he finally sold it and I went off to college. Seeing your work on this boat made me feel like I was watching him all over again...Thanks.

The heavy timber join at 7:39 has to be one of the most satisfying scenes in this whole build. Such accuracy on such a grand scale is the picture that's worth a thousand words and speaks volumes about the respect for the ship that's been present all through the restoration. Not sure if you'll ever see this comment Leo since I'm posting on a video you made two years ago. I just recently came across your channel and have been binge watching for the last two weeks. I know you already have Tally Ho in the water, but I've been trying not cheat and watch those video's, kinda like not wanting to skip to the last chapter of a really good book. All I wanted to say is I think this journey after watching half of it, is so much more than rebuilding an old boat. I think it's more about all the people you've inspired, brought together and have come to help you. In the movie Field of Dreams, Kevin Costners character kept on hearing a voice say," if you build it, they will come"! I think that's what you've accomplished even though that's probably not what you originally intended. You entertained people from all around the world, inspired us in our own projects, maybe influenced someone to become a sailor or boat builder and of course all the volunteers that came from near and far to contribute to Tally Ho. I look forward to catching up to your most recent video's in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully you'll sail somewhere close by so I can come and see Tally Ho in person. I am a little confused though. Unlike most other jobs, we don't mind if the videos are a little slower or shorter, and Leo could hire an editor to get his extra nights sleep. Surely he must have realised this himself if it is at all possible. And I don't see why it wouldn't be. This channel often goes for the highest quality in everything from little details in the boatbuilding to little details in the video. I deeply hope that Leo doesn't feel pressure to keep up being perfect. We like the project, even if the videos are a little bit less perfect. Yes we will be sad when a video doesn't come out as planned, but what are we going to do?, nonwatch the video and unsubscribe from the channel in protest, hell no, we like the project too much for that. If you happen to be Leo and you are reading this. Know that you are allowed to make mistakes. You are allowed to struggle. You are allowed to be less perfect sometimes. You are allowed to give yourself some slack.

I know it may seem like a lifetime, and yet in retrospect, yes, it has only been a mere 4 years since we chatted online about your future aspirations for Tally Ho. It was back in the early days of this channel, well before many folks had found it. Leo, I am in awe when I think about what you have accomplished. You've made yourself into a world-class, credentialed shipwright, wooden boat builder, artisan, historian and craftsman of the first water. You have managed to create several soon to be six figure businesses, or possibly a non-profit floating marine biology école ou deux, once again created out of thin air, that only a vagabond dreamer and true romantic would have the sheer imagination and courage to have taken on without any fear of failure or expectations of success. Success has always been a given with you, Leo. People just know it. We have always accepted it as fact, and in listening to you six months ago, back here in Sequim as you were getting ready to transition over to Port Townsend, you speak of leaving it all behind when you've finished with fulfilling your personal commitment to the Albert Strange Association, all in pursuit of the next great adventure. The middle of January, 2022 with Tally Ho nestled in its home in Port Townsend and I've been reflecting back on this amazing journey I've followed from the beginning. I didn't watch this video when it was released so it was fun watching it now. To my mind, this is the finest channel on KZbin. The craftsmanship in rebuilding this fine sailing boat calls for attention and appreciation but it is the community of people devoted to this effort that raises it above other similar projects. That Leo is talented and dedicated certainly counts for much. His videos keep us involved. It isn't surprising that viewers feel committed. I wrote a letter to the county when the dispute with the neighbor was coming to a head and also wrote a check. Given how much pleasure I take from these videos it probably makes sense to become a patron as well. There is NOTHING on television I'd rather watch that one of Leo's videos whether he is capturing the polishing of brass knees or faring the hull with torture boards or celebrating the whisky plank. Amazing journey. Thanks Leo and thanks to all the folks working so hard to make this happen.

Authenticity and historical thoughts are hard to come up with “correct” answers. My take has always been that the vessel would most likely be one of the lost ones that are scrapped or destroyed and in rebuilding and making changes for the longevity of the vessel your just adding to the history. I would love to see an old wooden vessel that hasn’t been changed in some way since it was first built. Ship building is both a science and a fine artwork.

It is amazing how much of Tally Ho has been thrown away, and now MUCH of her spirit stayed on. Timbers may rot, Tally Ho is still here! One person who absolutely must be invited is Steve Cross, the Live Oak guy from GA. Such a knowledgeable, gentle, clever man you would struggle to find, oh, and his wonderful accent. Leo, regarding sustainable forestry, check out Shelmore Timber in Staffordshire. Their model of growth and use is, I think exactly what you're aiming at. I bought some oak for a table commission, growing tree to sawmill to my garage, no more than 40 'furniture miles'. Worth a dose of looking at.

@@michaelvangundy226 Oh A2A is certainly on my list of YT boat builds, that are required viewing. Steve and Alix are an admirable pair of resourceful guys who will build a fine craft. However, the wheels came off with a tortuous planking process in contrast to Leo's flawless lining off. This is just the difference experience makes and as I have already said Arabella will be an exceptional boat in the end.

I remember the day I found your first video. It was my first day starting my journey on becoming an engineer as a naive clueless 18 year old. now more than 3 years later and almost done with my degree it brings me so much joy having been there seeing this boat rise from the ashes

i think i’ve been watching since the 5th video. i remember thinking that the old boat was basically firewood and i was wondering what this wild haired, romantic, british guy was up to. if he had any notion of the situation he was putting himself into. i’m happy to say that he’s been more than capable all along. i’ve never been a boat builder but i’ve been a carpenter and worked in construction my whole adult life and i could at least have some references to what was going to be involved with the scope of this project. it’s been a great experience even for just another viewer and subscriber to this adventure and i can’t even count how many times i’ve gotten misty eyed by the emotion of it all. i’m happy for leo and crew and if it was feasible i’d love to contribute more in whatever way. so thank you, leo. thank you for this experience. i know that there are many, many others like me who take a little time to relax and enjoy a half hour or so with you and your vessel’s rebirth every couple weeks. it is a luxury but a worthwhile one for me and i take comfort in sitting on my sofa watching sharp chisels and happy parrots working to put a dream back out to sea. my best wishes to you and your crew and your beautiful tally ho!

Wow 4 years already. I can't even remember how I came to watch episode 1 as I never had any interest in wooden boat building but I watched and couldn't turn away. The craftsmanship is so incredible and the stories are so fascinating! I have learned a lot and hope to learn more.

What a joy it would be to see Tally Ho, Sail Cargo, Arabella (Acorn to Arabella), Red Aviva (Salt and Tar) the Sea Dreamer (5 points woodworks) as well as some of the other great wooden boats together in an armada. The wooden boats need to be on the sea together at least one time to show this type of vessel is as viable for sea cruising as any of the modern designs and materials. There is something magical about wooden sailing vessels that needs to be kept alive and thriving. Wooden boats contain the DNA of their builders. Each and every drop of sweat and at times blood that drops and is absorbed in the wood leaves their DNA behind. It's a very true statement when Leo said "they are all part of this boat".

This is one of the most valuable experiences I have had as a result of being disabled and watching this work take place. Leo is a remarkable person, and I hope I am not out of line saying he reminds me why the English once ruled the world. He seems to lack no talent; he is both charming and driven; he is a natural and charismatic leader; and, most of all, he knows a beautiful boat (and woman) when he sees one. This series of videos has been a tour de force, and I know I can speak for thousands when I say that we will cheer and rejoice with him and his cohorts when this magnificent boat is finally doing precisely what she was designed to do: sail anywhere, in all weathers, safely and beautifully, and FAST!
