I actually preferred the (2007) Funny Games over the original as well until I watched them back-to-back recently. Now I prefer the original hands down over the 2007 version. They're almost shot for shot, and the original does it so much better.

@@TheMisfitPond Japanese 9-hour long WWII Epic. Split into three 3 hour episodes. Directed by Masaki Kobayashi (Harakiri & Kwaidan) Average letterboxd rating 4.5/5. Have I convinced you enough? It’s a recent bluray upgrade for the title, it has a criterion release number that is somewhere in the 400s, too lazy to look it up. Either way. It’s a masterpiece and one of the greatest war films and trilogies ever made.

Not sure if Perry knew this but the Criterion release of Nashville went out of print in March along with five other Paramount titles that Criterion had in their collection.

Great picks all around! I'm with Carlos, watch The Elephant Man Perry if you love Mike Leigh definitely try to find Happy-Go-Lucky it fits well with Naked as the main character in it (played brilliantly by Sally Hawkins) is the complete opposite of Thewlis' character.

@@jesusperez7108 Been some time since I've last seen it. The trailer is pretty bad. Then again, a lot of trailers from the nineties, particularly for "indie flicks", are bad, and often misrepresentative of the overall tone of the movie.

@@jesusperez7108 I recently watched some trailers from smaller releases I remember fondly, movies which haven't made the transition to Blu-ray, films like Dominick and Eugene (1988), Hangin' with the Homeboys (1991), Smoke (1995), Box of Moonlight (1996), and Tree's Lounge (1996) to name but a few, and came away thinking that the trailers made these otherwise good movies look bad. A byproduct of the era I suppose.

@@UToobin75 I agree. Trailers from the late 80s through the 90s were especially bad. A lot of indie film companies just don't know how to market their movies. Even A24 struggle with marketing their films unless it's a certified banger like The Lighthouse or Uncut Gems. Little off topic, but Box of Moonlight is such an underrated film. Turturro and Rockwell have such great chemistry in the film.

Huge Billy Wilder fan (might be my favourite director) so I agree that Ace in the Hole is incredible, Sunset Boulevard is a masterpiece but imo The Apartment is his best film, sorry Perry. I will say Bicycle Thieves is an essential film I agree with you there.

No one has yet appeared to realize that Kirk Douglas -- who also produced -- is at the top of his game in "Paths of Glory". As essential as "12 Angry Men," produced by Henry Fonda. And also see "Anatomy of a Murder," with James Stewart.

@@jesusperez7108 maybe it's better that way. I started with Criterion over ten years ago and then recently within the last three years got into Vinegar Syndrome, Shout Factory, Kino Lorber, Indicator, Arrow, Severin and collecting slipcovers. It's can be expensive. Ugh!

Saw it last year! Very good, although my least favourite Mungiu movie for now. I think Graduation and 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days are stronger. To me, it feels a tad bit too long, but beyond that, it does everything else amazingly.
