In this video we test 3 different priced high speed cameras, 1000$ Sony rx-100 , 3000$ Chronos 1.4 and 180 000$ Phantom v2512 to see are they all worth of their price.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEST AND PRICES: The comparison footage was filmed on really busy filming day where we did something like 6 HPC videos so we didn't use lot of time on the settings for the Chronos and Phantom. To get best possible result on those cameras you need to use bit more time than with the Sony. But this shows what all cameras do in same amount of time. Also I have to mention that I don't know exact price for the Phantom and it probably varies a lot acording the memory and other options but our camera was with top specs so it's probably somewhere around there, at least with the lens since all other prices also include lens. The price for mark 4 rx-100 probably also varies a lot but I think you can get one with 1000$ Also since the test footage is pretty old there is now newer software for Chronos that improves lot of things so the picture would be probably better now with Chronos.

Why does everyone always leave out the Shimazdu HPV and/or HPV-X ($250,000). It's monochrome, but their fastest beast does 10,000,000 frames/sec. That isn't a typo: ten _million_ .

Blade 7:18 Oh you _rent_ those suckers; not many many people own them; any owners are usually specialized testing firms who are going to be using them day in, day out big time. If you're North Korea and want to test various nuclear implosion detonation configurations, you figure out a way to steal one.

tubeist- dan got a quarter mil I can borrow? Its only $0.25 per frame, seems reasonable. Lol Edit: im accounting for actual rendering editing time alongside other incurred ownership costs involved. That shit adds up. Even flat out buying a phantom and the time needed to take and make a video is almost 50% the cost... Maybe that's why nobody brings up a camera that even MIT wont use unless DARPA or another government agency foots the bill.

You can get a 1000 fps camera for 50-100 bucks used on eBay. The Casio Exilim life fc100, fh100, fh20, zr 100, etc are cheap. But they only film like 250x60 pixels at 1000 fps. Fh20 films a bit better at 360x90 1000 fps.

RX100 IV vs V: Immediate thing to notice is the AF sensitivity/speed improvement as well as the recordable length in high speed mode. Speaking of which I sometimes prefer the IV because its smaller buffer is faster to write to SD card. (Either that or they have to be used side by side on a shooting range for example.)

For the cost, the chronos is just stupid awesome. Idk why it's not more popular. You and Taofleddermaus are the only two people I can think of immediately who use it regularly... Maybe Slingshot Channel, but I cant think of the last time he said that it's what he uses... I think he mentioned it before but I may be wrong. It still blows my mind that the guy who made the chronos managed to fit that level of quality into such a small and affordable package.

I think slingshot channel uses it quite a lot but it's not as important part of the videos than with our and Taofleddermaus videos. Joerg should also probably but bit more effort on calibrating the white balance and doing some work for the picture on post since his videos are usually really strange colored and have other issues also.

Beyond the press, I agree. He got a bit lazy after hitting 200k, even more so after he started getting paid advertising offers. He may have also just run out of shit to make, tbh. However, that's pretty irrelevant to the fact that the chronos is insanely good for the cost. I'm a musician myself and honestly know a total of fuck-all about white balance or whatever, but I know enough to see a great bit of tech when I see it. The phantom vids y'all do are nice and all but the reason I watch thpc is because of the originality of your content. You somehow manage to continually come up with new ways to use the press and completely unique videos unrelated to pressing shit. Even when you do the same thing twice its always "new" because you actually put effort into shit and are involved in each video... Unlike a certain "crusher" who makes relatively boring ripoff vids or half assed videos of cheap shit being shredded without any commentary. Keep up the good work. My wife said "Tell Anni hi, and where does she get those leggings? The universe ones."

One of the the reasons it look so good is mostly that it has at least 1080p resolution at speeds the fex Cronos only can do say 240x120 at the same fps. The sensor it self is also from the very pro line and cost probably what a normal Chonos would cost, and that is only the sensor.

You forgot about the casio EX-F1 and all it's compact cousins. Casio sadly doesn't make cameras anymore, the EX-F1 is the way to go, as the lenses tend to wear less (although the compacts are super durable too) It can record 1200 fps at a avery low resoltion, it can also do 600 at an almost decent and 300 at a very usable one, the big advantage to the casio camera is there is no recording time limit on the high speed modes (although there is a memory limit by the old SD standards that will only let it take smaller capacity SD cards) Also the EX-F1 and every casio I've had have ridiculously awesome battery life. To be clear, I don't recommend the EX-F1, there are many issues with it. but definitely the best budget high speed camera, and if you want to pay less and get slightly less quality, it's smaller cousins are also awesome... 1000fps with no limit for like 150 dollars, a lens that can zoom, and the newer cameras can take larger SD cards, you could leave them recording for hours. I wonder if one couldn't take multiple high speed casios (the ex-zr) series and then stick together the 224*64 1000 fps or multiple ex-f1s and stick together the 336x96 footage. Just stacking two on top of each other would result in 448*128 for the compacts and 336*192 for the ex-f1 and you could get really long clips out of them, especially the compact ones for a super low price. and why stop there? Just keep adding cameras and you get whatever resolution you want. Although I don't know how you'd synchronize it.

At a million frames per second, light moves ~1000 feet per frame. I wonder if you got a laser shooting microsecond pulses if you could see them fly away.

If you pulsed a laser/high powered torch at a reflective surface it should work
@wastedwizard5112
@wastedwizard5112 6 жыл бұрын
You got your Maths wrong I think. Light moves at just under 300 billion meters per second (3x10^8 m/s) So say your framing is a width of a meter, to be able to see the light for 2 frames, you'd need 300 billion frames per second. Usually you'll only get one single frame of laser pulse. To get light at say, for one second of regular footage, 24 frames, we'll need 24 times that framerate - 7.2 trillion frames per second. Also a microsecond burst would be Akin to a few decades or so of footage. But youd be able to see the front and back of the beam move.
@jcims
@jcims 6 жыл бұрын
3x10^8 m/s is 300 million meters per second, not 300 billion (3x10^11). So, light travels 300 meters in 1 millionth of a second (1 microsecond). A 100mw laser shot across a lake or large field against a reflector several km away would reflect back to the camera and easily be seen. At a distance of say 2km, you would have 6 frames between when the beam left the laser to when it reflected back. That would be easy to see even in a relatively low resolution.
@RufftaMan
@RufftaMan 6 жыл бұрын
You'd have to have something like fog to disperse the light though, else you won't be able to see the laser beam in mid-flight.
@jcims
@jcims 6 жыл бұрын
Typically yes ,but I've found that green lasers are very good about being visible in 'clear' air. Whether or not you could get microsecond pulses with a green laser is another matter, AFAIK they use frequency doublers which may have some kind of resonance or something to work through(?)

And just yesterday SlowMoGuys put out a video using the new Phantom v2640, capable of 12,500 fps at full HD, which honestly is more than enough for most anything you could film. Taofledermaus films his shotgun slug videos using a chronos. Hell, 12,500 fps is good enough to film a bullet traveling sideways through the video frame getting one image of the bullet per every 2 inches of travel assuming a high 2000 feet per second velocity, which is much faster than pistols but slower than high velocity rifles. A good mid point. And that's worst case scenario.

I was going to go through the three-part metaphor I used, by I'm sure you're already light years ahead of me, so I'll us both the trouble. I'm sure it would've been a waste of time...twice fold. Peace.

Zapdos 'Trying to be smart'.. you didn't bring a knife to a gun fight, you brought a crayon. Listen to Zuluknob...go back to school. You have courage. Good. Get some education and manners to go with it and we can talk. Good luck. Study hard, you've got a lot of catching up to do.

You should keep an eye out for surplus. Thunderf00t bought one of those 180K cameras (yes probably an earlier model) for 15K on ebay.

Thunderf00t's camera is another model and it's closet to Chronos in than v2512 in terms of speed

Hi Guys! Do you get any sponsorships from any of the cameras?

Not in terms of money but we have got two Chronos cameras for free and we have got also Phantom cameras couple times for free for one week for promotional purposes.

Beyond the press that's good that you got a trade, because you certainly do a great job of promoting their products on your videos.

If a camera films only 8 seconds, how does it know when to start filming?!
@LoialOtter
@LoialOtter 5 жыл бұрын
Normal use of high speed cameras is to post-trigger. That means that you start the recording right away and it uses the buffer as ring, overwriting old frames as new ones come in. After the event you hit the trigger button or stop recording and review the footage to find the event. You can also configure both the Phantom and Chronos to take a trigger input that records for a fixed amount of time before and after the event which helps when you're trying to capture a very short event.

There is no reason for the canera to cost 180k. Other than the manufacturer making ridiculous profit.
@Beyondthepress
@Beyondthepress 6 жыл бұрын
I think they kind of need that profit to develop new cameras. They don't sell those much when compared to cameras like sony so there has to be much more profit in one camera to cover all development expenses
