So true. As a NE stripedbass fishermen who uses staals in shitty conditions, I always cringe when I see people on piers and especially floridians who have them. They just buy them because they cost a whole lot of money but never understand that they are compramising performance because the reel is designed to be water proof and to take constant abuse that NE surf guys put their gear through.

The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!

Personally I only use the Van staal when the weather here in Long Island is bad while jetty fishing on the rocks with the wind rain and salt flying everywhere in waist-chest deep water and frequently dunking while unhooking fish. The Stella is a superb option for beach fishing I prefer it over the 200vsx bail-less I own because of the line lay. The Van Staal people think because the price it’ll fit their need but it’s not to fun holding a 3 pound reel while casting a 6 ounce plug for 5 hours. But let’s be honest kids in Florida on the pier has no need for them.

Big fish and spinning reels don't mix. They might catch one or two fish even more but it's kinda like taking a 22lr rifle into battle. 22lr will kill, but I can't depend on it! Wake up learn to cast..when you learn to cast you won't have to listen to these guys anymore. 30lbs of drag is no joke...and compound that with the fact that 30 lbs of pressure applied to less than 1/2" alloy. if i'm not mistaken, the jointed handle crank is made so that it can be transported/stored with a smaller profile - you loosen the locking screw so that you can fold/tuck the handle towards the body and lock it into that position by tightening the screw again so that it does not protrude outwards when transported/stored for those who do not want to remove the handle completely and chance losing the handle.

Joint in the handle is so the handle can be loosened and folded for storage. Has been for years. Easier to just remove but that was the intent on the original design years ago. Can't agree with your opinion about the appearance of the Stella. Gorgeous reel. Every model. 2020 even better. Shimano also has best customer service and parts are reasonably priced and easy to find. Stella is the beast, always will be. Try to review a Twin Power for us next. it is also a beast that is gorgeous and sooooo functional. Saltiga looks like its ten years old after a couple months. i had one and will never have another.

Yes, your comparison videos are wonderful. Keep doing them. For many years I’ve been a Shimano user. Recently I bought a Daiwa. I was impressed with the workmanship of the real and how sturdy it feels. Especially the bail wire and the handle compared to my Shimano in the same price range. As you get into the entry level Shimano’s from $70-$125 the recently released Daiwa reels are made better IMO. Shimano has not improved those lower level reels yet to my satisfaction.

Saltiga vs Stella Saltiga wins. The Staal is a beast of its own. Kind of an apples to oranges argument. As far as finish I had my Staal skip across the pavers in my driveway and it took me several minutes to find a scratch. They are built tough. And my go to snook reel. And the weight of a vs150 paired with a lamiglass 9' is perfect whole setup weighs what some bass rods do.

Van Staals are for hardcore surf fishing. If you live in Florida you don’t need a Van Staal. If you fish Jersey or NorCal surf then Van Staals are money. I have 3. VR50, VSX 150 and VSX 250. If I were living in Florida I would get the Saltiga Expedition and use it in the surf and as an inshore /offshore reel. For lighter surf conditions I use a Daiwa Certate LT. but if you don’t need a bullet proof ,crank it underwater reel, Van Staals have shitty drags, are heavy and the seals make for less than smooth retrieve.

I have to add that if the rod or reel is ever dropped from one of these cliffs, it can easily be retrieved and will work fine. In addition on a multi-day trip with no fresh water for rinsing, the VS could be a significant factor.

To me the reel for life, for handy and last minute usage is the vam staal. Basically you wont think about the reel anymore, you wont care if you fall into water, nearly no mainteinance for the occasional user and you can (carefully) pressure wash it after every fishing trip. It wont run as smooth as the others, but is a go-to in my opinion. Also i like machining and mechanics so for me no other reel in the world exist anymore... Nothing romantic, just a practical (lazy) decision for a well built machine that wont disappoint me

Thank you Ryan for the comprehensive comparison, they are all good reels actually. What I would more care is the dragging power with the brakes tightened when hooked a fish, this is because the area I fish is full of rocks and under the water so that I have to pull over the fish very quickly. So my question is which reel you would consider more powerful with the brake tightened when pulling up a fish from 15m depth water(other conditions like rod, line netc... are same)? I'm actually trying to choose one of the two(SALTIGA, Stella), and the dragging power is the most factor that I would care, thank you Ryan if you can give me some advise.😀

No Penn Torque? If were looking for the reel that is a cross over that can handle the beach taking a dunk in the waves, the jetty with splashing water, or offshore stopping a pissed off tuna that wants to make a blistering run or even taking on a species like a White Sturgeon from the Torque is exceptional. Stella Wise they came out with multiple sizes all the way up to a massive 30,000 that has 55 lbs of drag and holds 370 yards of 100lb braid so there is a tool for the desired species in question but there are some glitches with the Stella after its used for a period of time. Heavy but All around wise the Torque spinning reel is a Sherman tank with a jet engine

I have seen that stuff, read some good stuff online, also read some horror stories about reels seizing up after using the third party oil. I definitely can’t bring myself to recommend it to people that spent $800 + on a reel

but this magsealed Catalina-Saltiga(the new ones are given a 5?year guarantee).....versus Stella wins with platinum service. The rod is also important, sometimes more!...if you don't have so much $$ you can go with Catalina. $ medium range? SLAMMER 5.6-6.2 ratio or SARAGOSA 8000 (you can put tuned spool or the 14k twinpower)....Saragosa 14k (xg) is released soon and expected 18k (hg)! If you fish varied the same you need the 4 SIZES with low and fast RATIOS/RETRIEVE.....7-8reels!!. You can start with sahara or spheros 5k< stradic.....16oz sedona-socorro 6k and fast bg 4k. 22-25oz socorro 10k< spheros or cabo80 for strong jigging and for topwater bg 5k or azores< saragosa 8k or slammer. 30-33oz lethal100< spheros 20k and for popping bg6500/8k< slammer hs ¿=? new gosa 18k.

That’s rough! The sealing on the roller is improved on the 2019 version, but it’s still not perfect on any reel.

just take the roller bearing out and go to a place that meks bearings and get one there, they will make you one if they dont have one and it will be a lot better quality than the one you are replacing....

Even though the Van Staal can handle it. Please don't rub it around in the sand like that. My mechanical sympathy/OCD, just went into hyperdrive and I did a little sick on the keyboard. Now I have to strip and service one of my stellas or saltigas to be able to sleep tonight....p.s. what versus a Penn Torque or Torque II in comparison? I have every reel under the sun, but really love my Torque, if a little stiff from the seals...but I have heavy hands/arms so it doesn't really bother me. Cheers...rad vid bro

The stella is better than the saltiga. Daiwa uses expensive oil to seal bearings that is, at times, very hard to find. The van Staal is just as good as the stella, but a little different in class. The van Staal is more of a surf reel.

I agree I’ve always used Saragossas and still do use and love them but find they aren’t really up to the task of casting all day and hooking monster GTs that we get in Aus. Whilst I don’t really have many issues with Saragossa I find I’m always replacing the bearings in the line roller which can make the drag feel clunky which almost never happens with the Stella and is obviously a deal breaker for me. I use Saragossas and Penn ssm for surf fishing and Stella 18k for top water brutes and found that perfect for me

Ryan thank you so much for this great comparison video. I love the saltiga and even the 15 saltiga is better than new 2020 stella in my opinion .Its torq power when fihgting and the unic "Rotor Break system" when casting is worth every cents I payed for it. I couldnt understand why you didnt mention them ? The torq of old saltiga 6500 4.3/1 is nearly % 39 more than any Stella on PG class !!! And still can wind 100cm per turn ! I can never trust a stella for tuna. Even a 4000 standart 4.9/1 Catalina fights better than 6000 pg Stella on the arena...

When they work properly they are great. Historically they have had many defects and the company has changed hands half a dozen times in almost as many years. A dysfunctional company isn’t the consumer’s friend.

The 2020 Saltiga blow everything else away. There simply is nothing that compares. I have the 14000XH and it's perfect. That said, I own four Penn Gen1 Torques as well and I absolutely beat the hell out of my TRQ5 Bailless. It's the perfect harsh environment reel and that where I fish. The 'Tiga is for the boat, but as far as "super-spinners" go, the one you didn't mention or feature is the one my grandkids will inherit someday. Gen 1 Penn Torque.

You didn’t mention the weight of the reels, for example in Australia casting stickbaits etc off the rocks for hours is very tiring. What is best for that mate? Also if it’s magsealed wouldn’t you just need to rinse it off after use and it would be fine unless you dropped it in the water? How often would you need it serviced? Love the video mate👌
@RyanMorie
@RyanMorie 3 жыл бұрын
Weights can easily be looked up as they vary from model to model, on Average Daiwa is a a few ounces lighter than Shimano. And yes for typical use water rinse is all that’s needed for magseals, however after a year or two of use (depending upon how hard it’s fished) maintenance to these parts is necessary. Cheers 🍻

Never let down by shimano for so many years n i’m hard on my setup, surf casting all day long , i have two stella 6000 swb hg n 10000swc pg among many , better spool design , better line lay, no magseal thing which adds tough part for individual service dept. so dureable for the long run , still saltiga a beast of a reel too but not for me Btw Penn torque instead of vanstaal is more relative to this comparison. Honestly, how could be so complacent that you drop your gear in the sand or ocean on a regular occasion? This doesn’t happen. If you’re spinning all day then you need a reel that feels nice, the VS isn’t this. Also, magoil can be easily brought anywhere. eBay has heaps.
