We get the steering figured out on our 1000cc BMW K100 powered mini trophy truck build! Building steering with minimal bump steer would've been simple with this custom twin I beam front suspension setup if we only had six inches of suspension travel. However, we have over twelve inches, so we had to test fit, modify, re-weld, cut, modify, etc until we were happy with it.
Thanks for Watching!

Rob a steering box from an old John Deere garden tractor. My 1970 110 has an awesome steering box, it is super smooth. Worm gear, no play, adjustable, oil filled. I know the 110s, 112s, the 200 series, and I think the 300s have them. Just look for a 70s model John deere gt without power steering I think Ike has one at his house that got flooded.

One plus of a pole barn is that it goes up fast and cheap! I’ve got 4x4 treated posts in the ground 30 years now and no sign of failures. Plus you can always add onto the end as long as you need in the future

I-Beam style, steel exterior. My father had one built once that was converted into half of his house and the other half into an airplane hangar. Surprisingly the building was very versatile, efficient when insulated, and after 35 years still stands today and in every bit of good shape as when it was built. Part of my fathers hangar side of his I beam building he used for restoring muscle cars, and fabricating chassis for race cars. We devised a ton of neat stuff into some of the buildings beams, like an engine hoist, car lift, and holding up the upper level office floor. Versatile.

I suggest a steel building, I-beam or truss. We had a 30x40x12 with a 10x40 covered porch built a few years ago. It's insulated with 2 10x10 insulated doors. We had the electric run from the house to the slab before they poured it. Later, I installed 16 8' light fixtures and a 3-ton mini split A/C with heat (saved thousands in labor by doing it myself). It has become our go to area to do anything. My son (we met you guys out at the Pate swap meet last year and John picked rocks with him) always wants to have picnic lunches out there while I'm wrenching on stuff. They always say go as big as you can, and I agree, but this shop has a compressor, a blasting cabinet, 2 6' shelving units, 2 8' wokbenches and a 6' workbench, 2 floor cabinets, can hold 4 cars and two motorcycles, and there's still room to walk around all of it. And I can get it down to 72 degrees inside when it's nearly 100 out.

I-Beam all the way. Build in an overhead gantry crane to eliminate the need for the old trolley jack and blocks of wood. And while you're doing the concrete slab, dig/bore 4-6 500mm x 1000mm piers in a square/rectangular pattern with embedded steel to accommodate flush mount tie down shackles so you can use a chain block for pulling/bending/gently persuading heavy things!

Well once again I find my self a bit in the rears as far as timing goes, I have just recently started watching your channel but I also have some comments that may be helpful. You mentioned you are going to build a bigger shop. Awesome, you will not regret it. You also asked what we thought about the type of building you should build. Its my opinion that the most bang for the buck is a pole building. Im from Wisconsin, but live in Arizona now, and Wisconsin has maybe more pole buildings than any other state.lol Poole buildings are as permanent as any building, and the cost is far less than many other styles. They can be insulated easy, and are very low maintenance. The key no matter what you choose is having it well insulated. The better the insulation, the easier it is to heat/cool. Either way, glad to hear you are going with a new shop.

Here's a tip for doing dirt moving with the Kubota (I've had the same model for 16 years). When using the loader to lift almost anything, put the box scraper on! The BX will get real tippy real fast without some weight on the back. Also, in case it wasn't shown to you, you can smooth out dirt and gravel pretty well with just the bucket. All the way up on the loader control will "float" the bucket. IOW just the weight of it will lay on the ground. Just back 'er up and watch it smooth the dirt (if the dirt is not compacted much)!

@djjjs7375
@djjjs7375 4 жыл бұрын
@@bryansmith5980 that's insane. For the riding they do it will be fine. Cromoly is far to expensive for this sort of project unless it's being raced professionally. I think you are underestimating the strength of mild steel. They could have used aluminum and it would have been strong enough. Again not so cost effective though.

Polebarn 💯 I live in Florida and build them for customers all the time. Yes metal I beams would be stronger, but honestly I've seen the aftermath of hurricanes and while the I beam framed buildings were crumpled and warped the polebarns stood firm... Just a thought. And btw I absolutely love y'alls channel, it's awesome getting to see y'all grow the way you have!! Keep up the good work.

Take a look at the miracle truss buildings. They are clear span and great for shops.

I really like how on the few recent videos you've done the ending kind of black and white video just to gives us something to look at.

Plan long term. When you pour your slab, make provisions in at least one area for a lift, so that means thicker than six inches. Use it once for the channel so that you get the business write-off, but even if you install it just to have it for personal maintenance of your vehicles, you'll be thankful long term. Also, take into consideration all of the additional costs, such as electrical, and plumbing. I'm sure you'll want water, but will it have a bathroom? Urinal? Shower? Shop floor drain? All things to consider that add cost, and sometimes substantionally. Good luck on the endeavor! Barns and tractors; never thought I'd see that on this channel, but that's not a bad thing!

Go with the i-beam setup. You can't go more solid than that. Good video guys!

Don’t sell yourselves short. You’re 100% fabricators. You may not be PROFESSIONAL fabricators, but fabricators none the less and pretty decent ones I would say. That’s coming from a Machinist AND fabricator. Also, LOVE the build

I'd love to see videos on the shop build. An easy option would be a self assembly all-metal pre-fab kit, they come pretty cheap, pretty big, and you don't have to worry about fires from welding and stuff. The only downfall is that they are uninsulated, and you can't put in a second floor. For that reason, I think you should go ahead with the I-beam style like you said. Keep up the great videos.

I like the idea of something with an upstairs whether or be a rec-room or just for additional storage. Even a pole barn that's stable enough to support a mezzanine floor

Here in Indiana I would go with a pole barn building. We don’t have hurricanes here, just an occasional tornado. Build it with plenty of width for what you might need in the future. You can always take out an end wall and add on more length down the road.

I agree the red i-beam style for strength and durability. Way better for placing a crane and hoist into. Not to mention maybe a lift.

I went with chicken house style trusses on wooden poles , then pore slab . With metal roof and board and baton lumber siding . Cheap and strong .

Go for the pole barn. As someone who's built all of them, I can say that a pole barn of 40x60 can be built solid and permanent (with proper bracing). I've even made them out of old chicken house trusses (put 1/2” or thicker plywood sandwiched over every joint use either construction screws or galvanized ringshank nails that you curl. If you cover the bottom cord with tin or whatnot you never see the joints. My father in law once built a man a 40x100 for just under 21k. I live in GA so idk what NC law states though...

If you do a red iron building, You'll probably have to do a footer around the perimeter of the building to support the weight. We put a preengineered steel building up for my brothers garage and we put one about 10 - 12 inches thick around it. Also if your planning on a second floor in it make sure it's engineered for it. We had to go in & tear a second floor down in a different preengineered building because it collapsed because it wasn't made to have a second floor attached to the columns.

I-Beam for sure with a I-Beam trussed loft for heavy storage and allow trolley hoists to houst to the loft. Two stage air compressor, 2 Beam trolley hoists, 2 modified Harborfreight motorcycle lifts with these mods (12" removable wings on each side & air over hydraulic lift jacks. 300 amp electric service (you won't be sorry). Also look into a Rotary Phase Converter( American Rotary) to run 3 phase air compressors, mills, lathes on single phase 220 volts.

My family uses a pole style building as a professional restoration shop. Added pro you might not be thinking of they can be be added on to relatively easy if you decide to put on another 30ft as well as you can put in an attic if you want.

Good series, My thing with workshops is its not the size but does everything fit in....Think ahead car lifts, drills, press, welders etc etc all take up space also having things modular is wicked. Also final point is an overhead crane...i know you boys can get tractors etc all cheap in the US for lifting but better to be sorted
