Very cool to see 3d printing being applied to reduce weight in "real world" aircraft (as opposed to thinks like the latest very large turbine engine blades for huge amounts of money.) I hope this points to improvements for future powered general aviation aircraft also.

Im range extenders the final drive is generally always electric. Thus they are hybrids, while they are not :P. Almost all diesel trains have been range extenders since basically their inception. Final drive always electric, no matter the actual power source.

Seems to be a restricted market with a short lifetime. We have to stop burning fossil fuels. It seems likely that not long after this is put on the market, a battery-only system with similar range - or adequate range, how often does a glider need 1000km powered range? - will become available.

I fail to understand why anyone would want more than 300 km range on a glider. The idea is self launch and no outlandings. Maybe for Wandersgelflug all through Europe? But then you need a luggage compartment as well. Nice technlogy though and in the end the market will decide.

Very interesting. I'm interested to know how Airbatt have got up to 12AH now in a "standard" sized battery? - regretfully my German is only good enough for ordering beer, so I could'nt make out if he explained. I also really like the case for the batteries...
@schokotux59
@schokotux59 2 жыл бұрын
The "standard" batteries of this format are usually using lead gel technology, whereas the battery airbatt showed was a LiFePo (Lithium Iron Polymer) battery which is a different technology with better energy density. (Important note, don't confuse LiFePo with LiIon Batteries, they have different properties)

@@grahamariss2111 Fair enough. I don't know whether Lange Aviation really want to get into gasoline-powered aircraft though. I was thinking of Stefan in the middle of the Namibian desert needing a charge to take off from a remote airfield and having a very compact means to charge with him. The theft issue is a social one and cannot be solved by purely technological means unfortunately.
@bmpowellicio
@bmpowellicio 2 жыл бұрын
@@grahamariss2111 Installation, noise, vibration, reliability, smell, maintenance, cost and weight penalties would be much higher with a gasoline engine, which is why its rarely been done in a sophisticated glider over the last century. Towing a glider across to a gasoline refueling bay would not be a straightforward task, I can promise you. For an electric system there are lots of ways to run electricity to your batteries, it just needs a resourceful approach. For example, a few solar panels on the trailer roof would charge a battery (or your car) while you fly, so you then rapid transfer that charge to the glider when it returns and you have a break. My electric car holds 52kWh, so 10 for the journey to the airport, 10 for the trip home, and ten to fill the glider for the second flight of the day. Any solar power I collect while I'm parked is a bonus, but not necessary in the real world. Not long ago marinas and caravan parks had no power delivered to the pitches and mooring spots. Now they all do. A decade ago there were few car-charging points, but now there are tens of thousands. If the demand builds, the flying sites will see the attraction of running cables to the parking area for aircraft and cars. Its not a problem, its an opportunity.

Concept is well known - nothing new but ... this project could be enhanced. That is to say - forget battery, add hydrogen fuel cell and hit 1300km range easily with env.-friendly fuel. Carrying empty batteries dead-weight is NO-GO for any plane. Any engineer will understand, that in the air electricity must be from fuel cell. I love propeller design - very, very similar to rc-models we build.
@Xithia
@Xithia 2 жыл бұрын
Yes because empty hydrogen tanks are better. Never mind that cheap hydrogen comes as fossil fuel production by product, and you are carrying explosive, flammable, pressurized hydrogen. At least with LiFePo batteries there is almost no risk of fire.

Anyone that has an airplane knows that weight is everything and batteries will not work for you. A fossil fuel engine has a power density 50 times greater than batteries, so no matter how efficient a battery can get it will never get more energy dense than fossil fuel. Electric airplanes have a complex multilevel electronic controller, extra heavy battery system that can explode and burn and a permanent magnetic motor. The magnets that makes the electric motor are made from imported rare earth material.
@SteFly
@SteFly Жыл бұрын
And your fuel is not explosive? 🤣
@markspc1
@markspc1 Жыл бұрын
@@SteFly No fossil fuels are not explosive but batteries are. All airliners carry fossil fuel that can burn but are not explosive like batteries. The 787 batteries caught fire in Tokyo and Boston grounding the 787 for several months, however the 787 or any other airliner were never grounded because of fuel fire. Powering and airplane with batteries can be WOKE but you will go broke because it makes no engineering sense, 50 to 1 ration

For a glider, battery does work due to they have high glide ratio of 40:1. Your argument is valid for a normal aircraft that has glide ratio of 18:1. However a battery powered glider is expensive. A normal glider price is €5k but with a battery it is €30k. That is 6x fold!

It is called a motor glider - in Europe CS-22 in EASA regulation. FAA term for a motorglider is a “Powered Glider,” as described in Advisory Circular (AC) 21.17-2a. In some countries you might need a PPL or some other type of cert in addition to a glider license.
