It must be on the expensive side of gliders, but I love it's high tech dashboard. Also the electric propulsion is nice feature for gaining altitude when it's really need.
@Michael09052 жыл бұрын
The point at this glider is, that the construction of it is already almost 30 years old. In fact its even older because the Ls8 is basicly a Ls6 with fixed flaps, so you can say that the glider is from the 80s. Of course the Ls8 became kind of a legend with the time because it flies really easy but though has a good glide ratio (should be about 44:1) . Also its one of the most used glider for competitions in the standard class besides the discus 2. So DG in fact builds a glider, which is more than 30 years old. They do only small facelifts (like the neo winglets and so on) on them. The gliders of them cant compete with gliders of today, but nevertheless they cost a lot.

Almost nothing about is free but gliding is not expensive when compared to other sports. Most gliding clubs are run by volunteers ie. Members and may have only a couple of employees (usually instructors). There's also amazing rates for under 25's which can make the flying almost free, young people just need to be able to make their way to the airfield and you can borrow club gliders until you give up flying if you don't want to buy one. As with cars (also not free 😉) there's a second hand market and often random people buy one together and share annual costs in a syndicate. It costs as much as you want to put in to it. £50 a month can buy you an hour or more of flying and that's basically a cheap meal out for two with someone you really liiiiike

The Std. Libelle (without winglets) is also very communicative but compared to the LS8 not so stable. You need to fly the Libelle more actively and it takes more concentration. But the feeling of the thermals was also very good.

Then I thought that of course that would be a compromise on the gliding abilit, because of the weight so maybe it's not the best idea. Googled the weight of some glider, did some quick rough maths about weight, electric motors and energy consumption then realized it might not be such a bad idea. Thank you for the video. That is one cool glider. I noticed you have a spot personal locator beacon on. I’m glad you have a beacon. But you might consider getting the ACR brand. There is a few reasons for this. One the ACR brand has no monthly fee. It also has 5 W of power. This way if you were down in the canyon or under a snow covered canopy it will have the power to get out where the spot only has 1/2 of 1 W. The spot also has a monthly fee. Finally the ACR brand is part of a worldwide search and rescue network that many governments are on board with and the ACR beacon will work anywhere in the world even the north or south pole. The spot uses a private satellite network and there are reports of the beacon being set off and them not dispatching search and rescue because they think it is not a real emergency. That is not an option with the other network. Also the other networks at ACR uses uses two different satellite constellations. Anyway just wanted to point that out beautiful glider thank you

Can't remember who is trying to develop it yet seems a very efficient use of energy as wheel traction is far better for take off and requires power for only a 15 second burn allowing the battery to be small. Thereafter once up to speed jet propulsion can prevail with optimum efficiency.

Also denn : Many happy landings.

@@arminmoller9927 An einem Flug hatte ich 3,3 kWh verbraucht und der Akku war schon relativ leer. Zeitweise bin ich aber auch mit voller Leistung geflogen, um einen Wendepunkt im Berg zu erreichen...

If anyone is curious. Those 'screws' are commonly called zues clips/screws. Commonly used for quick on and off panel applications in the automotive world as they only take half a turn or so.

wonder if it would be worth covering the wings with solar panels to allow the glider to go farther if needed

Besides the tow-hook, what else is sacrified for the FES engine compared to the normal LS8? Can the rudder pedal go as far to the front, (the normal LS8 is not that big)? Is is still possible to put trimmweights behind the rudderpedals?
@SteFly5 жыл бұрын
At the prototype the rudder pedal looses one step, so it is about 3 cm shorter. But in the next gliders they will change it and the full length will be available. Trimmweight should be possible, at least I had some trimmweights in the trailer. ;)

Wait, so an electric glider is basically a glider but it also has an engine for some extra range if needed?
@germanhiguera70675 жыл бұрын
how long can u fly with engine on? range if u can
@thefox49443 жыл бұрын
Probabbly not really long. Engine is used just to take off or gain altidute when needed.

You could use the wind flow to drive the propeller which then drives an alternator generating its own constant free electricity.

compared to taxi drones, I think this engine looks more efficient. but can't land and takeoff vertically. maybe with more research, this machine will be future transportation.
@SteFly5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that gliders will get commonly used aircrafts for transportation. It is awesome to fly them as a hobby pilot and they are very efficient.
