One big difference that jumped out to me was the audio. Real was more driven and visceral; you could almost close your eyes and get a sense of everything that was happening with the car and track. The SIM in direct contrast seemed thinner and lacked the punch and feel that James' video had. As an audio engineer I'm wondering how much of it is equipment setup and tuning vs the SIM just not having the granularity and dynamic range you'd need to be close to comparable to real life. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to compare them so closely!
@thegersonmania2 жыл бұрын
Maybe, if he capture the audio using a microphone close to a high volume speaker, instead of capture directly from the game, could be more real. But he would have use ear protectors, like the real pilots

ACC’s lack any low end. The cars actually sound that mired in game. Look at R3E instead when it comes to sound
@Rahullll2 жыл бұрын
Another noticeable thing is that in real life, the rear view camera struggles with the headlights of the cars behind. Makes it really difficult to judge how close they are. I imagine close battles during the night must be increasingly challenging because of this. For the shaking of the camera, it does make the sim footage a lot more life-like but I agree that smoother footage is a better viewing experience. Maybe you could try a video or two without the stabilisation to see how it is. Overall though, very good comparison. I feel that for immersion, the game is becoming more of a limiting factor than the hardware currently, from a viewing perspective. From a driving experience, I reckon the next big upgrade would be simulating the G force though I imagine that it's currently not something that's able to be done. At least for a standard sim racer
@Gino_5672 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would look as bad IRL. The light exposure of just about everything on the in-car footage is blown out, which leads me to believe the camera taking the footage doesn't do well in low light situations and overcompensates.
@Exanimis112 жыл бұрын
@@Gino_567 Seems like the difference is between Sim jiggle simulating G forces and real consistent G forces. The real driver's head is more consistently held and the sim driver is more rattled. Harder to have a steady neck and head when you're being rattled vs consistent corner Gs.

Wow! Just wow! I’m grinning from ear to ear after watching that. You can definitely notice the added camera shake and how accurate it is to real life. It would be great to see a full race with the same amount of shake to comment on whether it’s better or not. Definitely felt more immersive from the short amount of footage just shown. The major differences that I noticed was the general level of sound and wind noise like you said and the video and sound quality. Your cameras and mics are definitely better, as expected 😀. I have to say, always loved cars and driving. I am fortunate enough to built a pretty high rig. Triple screens, direct drive, Gomez wheel, high end pedals and shifter. Recently, I was able to join a local track club in my area. Having never done any real road racing (I have a Ford Mustang GT), I was apprehensive at first, but quickly got the hang of things. I'm now able to track my car alone without a coach. For a beginner a significant move up. Thanks to sim racing and watching, learning techniques found on KZbin, I dont think I would have progressed in real life so quickly. Thank you for this and many other channels. Tracking and sim racing is fun and rewarding. Thanks again.

What's interesting is in ACC shortshifting or going a gear higher in a corner compromises you A LOT, while in James' car the torque in 3rd gear is plentiful and the 6th gear is very usable. As far as immersion goes, the rig is spot on!

The slightly smoother simulated video may actually be more realistic in regard to what the real driver is seeing, as the bouncing video from the live helmet camera does not take into account the slight motion cancellation effect of the eyes. An actual issue for me when using VR with no motion cancellation.

Real racing will always win just by atmosphere alone, sure the sim racing is super crazy immersive (i've been in a full motion rig VR setup) but when the sim race is over you get out of your chair in a nice calm air conditioned room, in the outside world once your session is over the track is still going, there's still 10s of cars waiting to go out, a great smell of petrol and burnt rubber, blazing sun or freezing rain, incredibly smelly sweaty drivers, the sounds of mass conversations and tools falling etc.. you might need to spend another 100k to somehow replicate that, but at that point id just do the real thing

i'm not downplaying sims in anyway, its absolutely fascinating how real your rig is
@mickaelsflow67742 жыл бұрын
Having had some decent time at a Motor Show in Paris a few years back, you can get "an" atmosphere that kinda replicate the "on-going" nature of your comment. Not quite a race, but talking to people around you about the laps, the race, cars and interacting with manufacturers, etc. Then going back in. That can feel like a mini race event. What I'm trying to say is... Simracing is very much so personal and intimate in most settings. The atmosphere, thus, would rarely even try to replicate a race day. Maybe it would be nice to have "clubs" where people could meet up and race and talk cars. Like an Arcade or Motorsport event or else. There was this awesome café/bistro, I think in France or Belgium, that had 3 or 4 rig in the back and fully themed around racing and cars. Good fun to race there with friends and new faces.

Firstly, great setup brother. I hope the developers of ACC see this video and can capitalize on the visual and audio comparisons of real life and the game for the next sequel. Road debris, haziness of the windshield, cabin audio, etc. The in game physics are arguably the best in the Sim space but for sure the details in the visuals and audio were noticeably different and I hope AC can improve on in the future. Miniscule details, overall it's hard to tell the differences especially for the average person. Great work!

Main differences for me that the SIM could replicate, the vertical red lights on each side of bothe dash screens. The reflective patch on the headlining. The outside lighting, see how you can see the whole wing mirror mount are lit up. And then the harshness and wind on the sound. I guess things the user can replicate are the matching wheel and button box if you where to only drive 1 car and strive for exact replication (of course VR can fix those 2)

I'd argue that replicating what the camera sees in real life isn't what you'd see if you were physically in the car. Because our eyes smooth out the motion automatically in real life, adding more motion might be more accurate as far as regards the camera's view, but it's moving away from the reality that you'd see if you were in the car. The question then is do you want to be more true to a camera's view, or more accurate to how the eyes see. Personally, i would prefer to watch the race as if i were actually in the car (so less movement, smoother) than i would if watching via a camera (more movement, less smooth). Anyway, love the videos Will, cheers!

Seriously, I think the main difference is that the real footage is 'dirty'. It's grainy, blurred etc, where as you footage is very clean, sharp etc. I think if you added some post processing to make yours dirtier, you'd be hard pushed to see the difference. Of course that isn't necessary, people know it's a sim and want to see what's going on when they watch your videos but would be interesting to see how it looks with those effects added.

Love the rig!! Having real world sportscar racing experience and having raced in mix class and on Rovals, ect let me say sim racing is way more comfortable 😁. But that said even with VR on my rig and having raced tracks in VR that I have in real life there are just things that are hard to replicate. First and foremost the feel of speed. Also when you’re covered head to toe and belted in you’ll find its hard to get a full breathe because the belts wont let your rib cage expand. Also the G forces tend to cause you to breathe out of your mouth more often than not which then leads to cotton mouth. Then theres the heat aspect. Even with ice cold water passing through the cool shirt you still dehydrate which leads to fatigue and concentration issues, usually late in the race when everyone is strung out. I personally never felt a breeze on me unless I cracked the visor but even that was a limited breeze. If you can feel a sense of fear in your sim then you’ve actually simulated the most important aspect of auto racing. Every driver has it we just get comfortable with it and suppress it then talk macho smack when we’re out of the car haha.

So cool can definitely see the difference with just the quality of video ie the screens in side the cars just being a blur do to the camera not picking them up properly do to exposure and frame rate other than that it's wild how close it is. Love the rig and the concept you have gone for, totally awesome, going to replicate some of it! I go with the most the other comments on here. The Audio and Lighting were not even close for me in the Sim. ...But the main thing I could see was grip difference, and how much harder the real car was to drive, and how much more it was moving on the limit when on the limits of traction. The kerbs are too muted in the Sims too, too linear and the tyres still do not behave the same...

The sim POV looked more real like MK 1 eye ball real then the real footage with the gopro as the ISO was too high and was much loader do to the bad internal mic they have... But man if you just used your side veiw mirrors it would be a match espely as you can blow out you camera and turn up the speakers. Altough as others said it's down to pick and choosing what you want on video. As even with a go pro you can stablize it and make the picture more clear and balance the sound better. Its always struck me how in actual in car footage things like the rumble strips and suspension noises are far more pronounced, I'd love for it to actually sound like I'm in a metal/carbon box that's getting twisted and stressed and hit by random debris.
