Questions: 1. what are the top 5 best light-weight keyboards you've used? Light means you can hold it up in one hand for more than 30 seconds. 2. why haven't you reviewed a typewriter converted to a keyboard yet? 3. ever been to oktoberfest? if so, how did you like it? 4. i've learned how to touch type very early on and contrary to what you say, it doesn't /necessarily/ cause RSI. but i've also had to change my keyboard layout (slightly; it's still like qwerty). the combination *demonstrably* lowers some types of rsi. would you be interested in talking about it and trying it out? it might take a little learning, but I'm pretty sure it would open up your eyes to aspects of your keyboard use that you haven't considered yet, like it has mine. now that you're not going to be doing reviews every week, you could find time to do something like this. i'm sure it would make you see some things about keyboards in a new light. 5. can you tell us a travel story? it doesn't need to have videos or pictures, just tell us what happened. it doesn't even have to be especially funny. just fill 10 minutes or something. if you want you can add some photos from google, but don't put too much effort into it.

I tried dvorak and colemak for a few years. I can switch between qwerty and colemak on the drop of a hat, but getting up to speed takes a week or two. Colemak is more ergonomic. I have to reach and reposition less on colemak when touch typing. That's my take and my anecdotal experience. The reason I still went back to qwerty is because of the support mainly. Getting keycaps, playing games, software hotkeys etc. are very much assuming everyone is using qwerty. I do however that for English and programming colemak is very noticeably superior. Ortholinear is another story, but strangely similar. It is more ergonomic. Having to reach less to the side, again when touch typing, is much easier on the wrists/hands. Their support and availability however is again; shite. Split it makes more sense than that waffle keyboard, because of the wrists/shoulders again. If I was the world's emperor I would know what asinine ruling I would try to enforce regarding keyboards: colemak, Alps (they can choose tactility) and ortholinear.

You're right, last time I checked there is no advantage of using the Dvorak layout. I have it installed, it's easily done, but your supposition is correct: The organisation of the keys essentially doesn't matter and people who have used qwerty for their whole life typically never exceed their qwerty typing speed with a dvorak keyboard. To anybody reading this comment: Changing your keyboard layout is easy, you don't need to get a new keyboard to try dvorak. One caveat: Now I've installed it, any time I accidentally press Windows+space it changes my keyboard layout to dvorak, which usually isn't helpful.

since you are approaching the end of you to-do review list, could I suggest some creative content regarding your area of expertise, so that you could get the same amount of fun from just making the videos as you have had from trailers, and in the process remain as entertaining as always 1. obviously, people love TOP10s for whatevers, but perhaps something more akin to your sense of humor, e.g.: - TOP x keyboards as a piss-take surprise gift for someone you hate; - TOP x quirks and features from classic boards that modern ones are missing; - TOP x keyboards to play baseball/cricket with, either due to them being sturdy, or coming from the internal need for removing POS from the market; - TOP x biggest surprises/disappointments from the market; 2. blindfold guess - trying to guess what keyboard type, brand and model you currently have in front of you (obviously need an associate to prepare it for you) 3. ear-only guess - same as 2, but without typing on them yourself 4. vintage (and later modern) brands/switches history videos - how they started, where are they know, why (in your opinion) they did/did not stayed on the market
@J_Vermillion4 жыл бұрын
This is why you don't get why ortholinear (in theory) should be better: you don't touch type. Ortholinear layout is better because spacing between surrounding keys is the same, for every key on keyboard. This is important because, for instance, you should use your right index finger to type the letter 'Y' and your left index finger to write letter 'T'; these two distances should be the same length from the keys your fingers rest on (i.e. 'F' and 'J'). But, if you take a quick glance at your keyboard, you will notice that there is quite a difference between the two. In ortholinear, as I pointed out before, this is corrected. On the other side, alternative layouts in Dvorak/Colemak are arranged so you move your fingers the least. In touch typing, your fingers should always rest on the home row (ASDF row), so it would make the most sense that the most commonly used letters are assigned to that row. In summary, both concepts are used so that the fingers move the least amount possible, theoretically causing less strain and enabling the user to type faster.

I agree with the statement of switching keyboard layout to another one that people claims to be better does not give any apparent benefits. And indeed I have switched to Colemak myself. The most annoying part of switching layout is sometimes the game does not recognise the new layout and and controls are just fucked up (only game that I find it automatically recognises the layout is Minecraft). I have to re-map every single one or make use of two-layout to use for gaming and typing. My typing speed did improve some, but it does not have major improvements over my QWERTY typing, like my QWERTY is around 52 WPM, the Colemak gives me around 70 WPM (or 90 WPM for simple stuffs), it does not even worth it when considering my typing mistakes happen more so occasionally and I keep to hit backspace and re-type again. I'm pretty sure it can be improved by some of special practices or patience, but for now I just let the time improves me on it because I can't get back to use QWERTY again.

On the MX Red thing, I think it is a similar thing to vintage MX Blacks. With use the plastic gets smoother because of the effects of friction, sort of like breaking in a new car engine, except the effect is simply a scratchier switch rather than destroying the entire thing if used improperly during that period. I can also attest to that because my alphanum block is waaaay smoother than my numpad that I dont really use.

I’m so with you on alternative layouts and ortholinear. No desire to relearn an entire lifetime worth of muscle memory. Plus, to truly see if they’re better, I think you’d need to start with little kids with no typing experience, have them exclusively use the alternative their entire life, and then start testing their speed and accuracy once they’re grown and compare. Monitor them into old age and see if they have fewer wrist issues. Since that isn’t going to happen, I think the ship has sailed, and we are mostly stuck on staggered QWERTY forever. Also, speaking of kids… lol at how touch screen tech has distorted everything. I have a 10 year old who is pretty quick on a tablet full size on-screen keyboard but can’t type for shit on a normal keyboard. All her muscle memory is apparently for light taps. God knows what computing looks like when her generation, the ones who grew up with modern tablets, are adults.

One of the requirements was that we used inches for our design, but as a whole class we decided to ignore it and use metric. Despite telling us he liked us using metric instead, he took off points on all of our designs for ignoring his instructions.

In my opinion they are really nice for being MX (or at least good enough not to feel the same as other MX), but there are nicer alternatives outside MX, like topre and probably tactile alps if you strictly want tactile. If you don't strictly need tactility you can go for clicky ones, that are generally tactile switches that don't need to be limited not to emit sound, and at that point there are a lot of better alternative, some a lot cheaper, like model M, or even cherry blue (I think the feel is quite good, at least for being an MX, even if the sound not so much).

Monitor-wise, sweet spot right now might be a 27", 16:9 1440p resolution, IPS or VA panel, and since you are a frequent gamer, also a high-refresh rate one (e.g. > 144Hz) with Freesync, since now even Nvidia cards supports freesync. The Hardware Unboxed KZbin channel has great monitor reviews and recommendations. Ideal time to upgrade might come when HDR gets mature enough in the PC world. (It is sort of mature in the TV world, but not yet in the PC world.) A monitor lasts a lot longer than PCs in general (as you can likely tell), but getting a nice current PC monitor might be a strong reason to upgrade to one of the newest graphic cards specially to enjoy those high refrest rates. And upgrading to one of the newer graphics cards means upgrading to one of the new generation cpus, e.g. the current AMD Zen 3 ones (5600X, as best value and one of the top performing, for example)

The thing that will always keep me away from alternate layouts or ortholinear is the wide availability of qwerty as is... if I specialize my typing skills in qwerty I can easily take advantage of those skills anywhere I go, there will be a qwerty keyboard to use... if I spend time with dvorak or ortho, I would have to take my keyboard with me, and there will be many times I can't plug it into whatever device. You can change the layout in Windows so you don't have to take your keyboard with you, and others can use yours if needed

@@coffeeneeded2605 the point was that many times I won't be able to change settings or plug keyboards, systems out of my control... at school, some jobs, libraries, banks, etc. not worth the time, for me, personally.

The biggest negative feature I’ve ever seen on a keyboard is the “spill resistant” pad in the Corsair K68. Turns cherry Mx reds into feeling like horrible squishy rubber domes.
@SleepingCocoon4 жыл бұрын
i feel you on doom 2016 - eternal is equally not doomy, but if it's your thing, it's your thing! neither of them really call back to the very "liquid" feel of the original game or their level design sensibilities. not that they're bad, just that they're not my thing at all [edit] lagavulin 16! nice. is it your go-to? bowmore 12 is my usual.

Do you think there's a market for a silenced clickbar switch? I.e., a BOX White/Pink/Navy with foam or rubber between the clickbar and the housing, quieting/silencing the click, but retaining the sharp tactillity?
@greengrapejelly4 жыл бұрын
I think it would be cool if you showcased MX style alternatives, such as Alps if applicable, that are available on the market so people can consider using them in builds.

I'm trying to learn Dvorak without unlearning QWERTY. I practice both simultaneously and I've kept my QWERTY speed with a possible increase in speed while getting up to 35 in dvorak. If you totally switch and don't practice QWERTY at all, I think you will forget it.

Staggered layout is a solution to a problem that no longer exists. Ortholinear is the way a computer keyboard is supposed to look like, simple grid. Look at Numpad and Nav cluster - they appeared along with computers, and they are ortholinear.
@SockyNoob4 жыл бұрын
You do realize that your fingers don't move in a grid, right? Orthos are only useful when you're only using a single finger.

choose: use a switch with horrifying scratchyness for two weeks or a switch with unbearable binding for a week? edit for context: the really scratchy switch would have excellent stabilisation and the bindy switch would be smooth as butter if pressed right on the centre
@BrianMcKee4 жыл бұрын
Binding is the fucking worst. I barely ever type dead center so it'd be absolutely unusable.

I prefer imperial units for everyday simple measurements since they more closely match real things (feet), although that carries inherent ambiguity.

Dvorak and colemak is better optimized for speed and it's easy to see why, qwerty requires you to move your fingers a lot more whereas the alternate layouts put the most frequent letter on the alphabet on the homerow so you don't have to move your finger as much, therefore reducing fatigue and increasing speed. Same with ortholinear where you only move your finger linearly instead of diagonally to reach bottom/upper rows That said, if you only use keyboard for everyday typing then yeah it's definitely not worth the effort of relearning years of muscle memory. I don't see much sense in switching to ortho either. But that's just me
