101 Comic Books Worth $20 or More That Are Easy To Find At Garage Sales Dollar Bins and Flea Markets

I came up with a list of more then 101 different Comic Books that are worth $20 or more that you can find pretty easily within comic collections when you find comics at Flea Markets, Garage Sales, Dollars bind and more. This list covers comics that were published from 1986 to 1999 and features only comics that regularly sell for $20 or more on ebay.
The list is not complete but its the list that I keep in my head when I am out hunting for comics and looking to see what I can find. If you know of any comic books that regularly sell for $20 or more from 1986 to 1999 that was not on my list please let me know in the comments below.
I created this video to help the new collector focus on finding key issues for their collection or to find comics of value that they can trade or sell to get the comics that they want. Its also a great video to give the experienced collector a quick refresher on what to keep your eyes open for.

I am happy you enjoyed the video. Its like the birthday paradox, if you have 75 people in a room its very unlikely that someone will have the same birthday as you but its almost 100% certain that 2 people in the room will have the same birthday. With this list it will be very unlikely you will find the exact book you are looking for in any collection or in any sale but if you are looking for all the more valuable books at once its very highly likely that you will run into one of them pretty darn often. I seem to find one of these keys almost on a monthly basis on the cheap (sometimes weekly during peak garage sale season). Honestly I have not run into a New Mutants 98 yet but I have found Batman Adventures 12 2 times very cheap. I consider both of those higher caliber finds etc.

That is not the first appearance of Turok I read comics of Turok son of Stone and Magnus Robot Fighter from the 1960's and Turok first appeared in Four Color Comics # 598 Oct./Nov. issue 1954. Got his own title Turok Son of Stone in March - May 1956. Harlequin was name of a Green Lantern villainess in 1940's. Prof. Zoom the Reverse Flash in the 1960's.

There is no way you are going to find Spider-Man #300 in the dollar bin unless it was balled up with tape. There is a lot of wishful thinking here.

Its not the fact that you will find any one specific issue, but the fact that if you know what to look for there is a very high chance you will find something from this list. I see a few people a year who find ASM #300 for $1 at garage sales flea markets craigs list deals etc. Look up the birthday paradox. If you are in a room of 30 people there is almost a 0 percent chance that someone has the same birthday as you but a very high percent chance that 2 people in the room have the same birthday. The same thing happens with comic hunting, if you are looking for an exact key issue there is a very small chance you will find it but if you are looking for all key issues there is a high percent chance you will find one.

I have all of the Wolverine comics. Although #8 Wolverine with Hulk I did not. even though I had a subscription I had changed address and never got it. I picked it up several years later at a flea market boy was I so happy I did. I can remember seeing some of these issues at my local (20 miles away) shop. I wish I had the money to buy them back then but I was a poor broke kid. The # 8 Wolverine Hulk I got for $1.50 ish.

Great examples.. I have a quick story to share, I walked in to a local comic shop to browse around when a man walks in asking if they were buying at the moment. Store manager said not at the moment especially 90's stuff so I asked the person if I could see them and he showed me 1 Long box, it had Spawn #1-30 in great condition lots of more Image and a couple of Wolverines and Web of..... but in there was the "almost complete" run of Evil Ernie #1-4 (missing 5)! Was super stoked when I got home and found it while going through them.. First Time I can say I got something at dirt price.. paid $50 for the full box and I still haven't gotten through it all at the moment.

At the moment I am really not doing much trading or mail order, I just do not have the time. Those are very desirable issues. I am sure you can sell them to buy something else you want pretty easily.

The publishers all just glutted the market in the late '80s thru the 2000s so the idea of making money from collecting from that period is a fool's errand. Just too many copies of just about everything. Also, don't forget condition.

The high print glut was late 80s into the 90s but by the late 90s into the early 2000s when the comic market was at its low point print runs were very low. That is why things like Walking Dead #1 has such a high price. Condition does effect value but in the case of this video I used about VF to determine the $20 minimum selling value. So a few spine creases you can still get value from them. The point of this video is not about making yourself rich but if you are already digging through dollar bins and garage sales for comics, it will help you find more key issues for your own collection or to sell for something else you want. It also might help you if you are selling a collection that you are not familiar etc. You can call me a fool because I enjoy collecting comics from all eras including that era and there is plenty of cash selling comics for $1-$3 a piece from that era.

I have 2 I have found over the years. Its not about finding one specific rare book while hunting, but knowing all the rare books to look out for. Eventually you find some, and if its not one you want. You sell it and get the one you want. Also this video is old! Value has gone up on those a ton since I made this video so a lot more folks are aware of them.

I have that issue as well in my collection, I bought it 15 years ago or so when I was collection everything Geof Darrow drew. I still believe Next Men 21 is the first full appearance and the SDCC is 1st cameo with a couple of other small cameo appearances before the full appearance.

I might be wrong, but isn't Nextmen 21 the First Color Appearance of Hellboy, not the first appearance that you mentioned? The character first appeared in San Diego Comic-Con Comics no. 2 (August 1993), published by Dark Horse Comics.

I live in Brooklyn, NY so the answer is both yes and no. The Flea Markets tend to be really bad because they are expensive and a dense population means they are very well attended so I rarely find anything at them but sometimes I will find a steal. As for Garage sales or Stoop sales because of the population density you are almost guaranteed to have a few within walking distance every weekend and even more if you drive which I sadly don't. So the real luck is when you find any comics at any sale. I like making videos like this because it preps people to be ready for when they do find comics, its not going to happen every sale or every week but you will bump into them if you keep looking. You can see a lot of what I find in my haul videos :) Good luck!

Static (vol 1) #1...obviously starring static shock from the dakotaverse which was created by Dwayne McDuffie. (His company called Milestone media, an imprint of DC before it was subsumed into DC proper in 2008). You can find other titles from the Milestone lines: icon, Hardware, blood Syndicate and stuff like that. Most of them were published between 93 and 97. update sorry I read that wrong and thought the criteria was books under $20 that you could find at garage sales, dollar bins and stuff like that that was still a first appearance and a good book. After I got to the third book on your list, I figured I had read that wrong. But you're definitely not going to find amazing $300 bin, maybe at a garage sale and maybe at a flea market if they don't know what the hell they're doing, but I don't think you should ever expect it in a dollar bin. As far as the Killing Joke first print, yes it's the green letters but they're also embossed. I don't know if all printings after that were also embossed but I think not.

I probably have 5-10 Killing Joke books and I believe all the letters are embossed, the only difference is the color. I personally have not found a Amazing Spider-Man 300 yet, but I see at least 1 a week someone pulls from a garage sale, thrift store, dollar bin of a comic shop that only really deals in new comics etc. Its not easy but it happens. The point of the video was not to say you will find all these comics cheap, but if you look for all these comics at once there is a high chance you will find one of them cheaply. I personally have probably found 50-60% of these books for $1 and another 20% or so under $5. I always say its like the birthday paradox. If you go into a room of 75 people there is less then 1% chance one of those people have the same birthday as you, but almost a 100% chance that 2 people in that room share the same birthday. So when looking for comics of value at thirft stores and garage sales etc if you see a pile of comics there is a very low chance you will find one specific issue worth something but a high chance that something of value is there you just need to know what to look for.

@@popfuntoplay well you're definitely not wrong especially at the end of this comment. I've never heard of the birthday Paradox but it sounds fascinating. And the only Killing Joke book I have is my first print lime green embossed, I just wasn't sure if some of the much later print things that I haven't seen were not embossed. I don't have amazing 300 either, cuz it's god-awful expensive even a mid-grade , but I do have 298 + 299, I think one of them is better than the other but they're both mid-grade or around there. And I don't usually have the time to spend at garage sales, thrift stores and all types of stuff like that. I have less than half of the things on the list as I recall, I didn't write it down as I watched the video. But I think it's less than half. So what are your thoughts on mcduffie's dakotaverse that I mentioned at the beginning of my comments?

Flash 197 is not the first appearance of Hunter zolomon prof zoom. Before you said that... I was absolutely 100% positive that it was in flash secret files and Origins #3. New Mutants 26 is the First full Legion. 25 is the first David Haller.

I found #298 a few years back for $1, just missed out on a #300 at a garage sale. I have see a few folks find them for $1. Not everyone will find them but its good to know key issues to grab, you might not find the exact one you want but there is a good chance you will find something if you keep looking.

Actually when I made this video, I looked every comic up on ebay to make sure they were selling for at least $20 raw and ungraded in around VF condition. most of these would be as low as $5 if they were in fine or vg condition or worse. Light wear, vf condition they all sell for $20 easy.

My guess in a low grade like that it might be $50-$75. I dont see any low grade ones selling on ebay so its kind of hard to determine the price.

When I made this video every single comic was regularly selling for $20+ on ebay raw, so I am confident you could get $20 out of any of these in vf condition. The era I choose to focus on was one of the most over produced eras of modern comics so not all of these comics are common but you can find collections from this era all the time so when you do find a collection of mid 80s to 1990s comics if you know these 101 comics there is a good chance you will find one or more of these in the collection. I think I have found at least 80% of these for $1 over the last 10 years, with a few I have found dozens of times. The list has expanded now, When I made this video Spawn #1 was a $5 comic etc. And I have found 100s of those.

Honestly every collector should learn to sell some of their collection so if they are ever in need they can get as close to full value and not have to dump them for a fraction of the value make a quick buck. That being said, the way I collect is not to make a buck but to get more value per dollar I spend then paying full price. That was I can sell some of the comics I have already etc and if I can break even cover the cost of the ones I am keeping then I can collect as much as I want.

Maybe 1 or 2 of those comics you would be super lucky to find at a yard sale, but easily over 60% of your list is over $100, and a few are well over the $300 to $500 range, you arent going to find any of those at a yard sale usless the people are totaly brain dead

If you find comics at a garage sale / thrift store / flea market and the seller is selling them for bulk price, there is a really good chance you will find something from this list if you are one of the first to dig through the pile. I have found almost all of these comics over the years. The point is to know what to look for so when you find comics you might find one in the piles. I have many haul videos where I found these comics or similar comics for $1.

Image was so over produced that most of it is worthless, Spawn has risen in value since I made this video though. If you have a true NM copy of Spawn #1 you could probably get around $20 for it, if its in vf or less the value drops quick because of how common it is. 10 years ago I use to buy boxes with 50 Spawn #1s in them for 10 cents a comic, that is how common they were. Now some image comics the production runs dropped so there is some value in later issues of spawn, 100 and newer tends to have more value. Also newstand editions tend to have more value as well.

I think that next Men book is the first color appearance of Hellboy, but theres different apps/versions of him before that by Mignola. You'll have to research it, I don't know what they are right off the top of my head now. But there was a pre Hellboy Hellboy that didn't have quite his current look, it was like an antecedent Hellboy and I think it was a drawing in a special issue of a comic, maybe it was San Diego Comic-Con comic. Someone else will have to speak to this. It's the same as Savage dragon, he was in some random Indie book before his first issue from Image Comics but just called the dragon and I don't think he had the big fin on his head.

He had two cameo appearances in promotional comics Dime Press #4 (March 1993): first Hellboy prototype appearance, cover only. San Diego Comic Con Comics #2 (August 1993) I believe I own the SDCC comic picked it up maybe 15-20 years ago because at the time I was collecting everything Geof Darrow drew lol I think it was $2 at the time. I need a Dime Press #4 it is pretty rare.

Cuz I collect a number of other things to like action figures, toys, coins, a little bit of paper money, seashells and all sorts of other stuff including animal bones and such. I’m guessing some of these will have increased in value since the release of various movies over the previous two years including the just released Birds of Prey- Harley Quinn movie and the hopefully soon to be released New Mutants film. I have a good number of the comics you have shown including the X-Men and Spider-Man series, including #300, and #301 of which I’m astounded at the prices that are being asked on sites like My Comic Shop and DTA.... So no way am I selling any of those for two or three dollars! I have just begun pricing my collection, which runs from circa 1983 through to the present, with a few gaps from the late Nineties through the early 2000s, MCS as a guide. So that’s a lot of comics! But they have to go!

Prices definitely jump due to the movies etc. The point of this video is not to say you can find the exact comic you want for a buck or two but to be more aware of everything out there that might have value. There more you know the more likely you will find one of these comics from this video on a regular basis. Also maybe this video will help someone selling their own comics to take note of something of value and not give it away for $1.

I got a tip. Not for comics necessarily. Furniture stores, I found a bunch of first editions from Kipling, and others. Dummies used them as props. I bought them all for 25 bucks. Sinclair Lewis, The Jungle was among them. Yeah satisfaction.

First appears of Marvel's Spider-Girl, DC comics had a Spider Girl in Adventure comics stories with the Legion of Super Heroes that had long red hair that would wrap around whatever she wanted it to, she appeared before Marvel comics had a similar Medusa, and before their Spider girl also.

I want to collect so much, so I collect in a way that pays for the collecting so I can collect everything I want. Honestly not sure what Problem you are talking about. Every collector should have knowledge of value, it makes them a better collector. They can get more of what they want and possibly sell items occasionally to help pay for more expensive items they want.

But if you are already digging through dollar bins looking for things you want based on art and writers then its good to know what else to grab while hunting. Nothing wrong with snagging a $50 comic while grabbing a stack of stuff you want so you can sell the comic and pay for the keepers. Its how I collect and it lets me collect all the comics I want.

They may be hard to find at a Garage sale (or anywhere else), but take a look at the Uncle Scrooge comics from this era. Especially the "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" storyline and especially #310. (1998). Good luck finding them though :) Also #219 (1987 I think)

I think nextmen 21 is undervalued because it’s the second appearance of hellboy. Dime press isn’t really a comic, so sdcc is technically the first and the lowest print run of the 3. Hellboy is actually color in nextmen 21 tho

Definitely the main reason I collect them as well. Then the stories second. Knowing which comics have a higher value though is important because when you are digging through a pile of comics pulling out the ones with wonderful covers if you stumble across a $50 comic for $1 you can snag that too and sell it and pay for the rest you just bought or use the money for a more expensive comic you really want for the cover etc.
