I live here and LOVE it! Spontaneous parties, parades, porch concerts, dancing in the streets (policeman’s horses dancing in French Qtr), street musicians, magicians, world class gymnasts entertain us on sidewalks. And the FOOD! OMG ! Simon, let us know when you’re coming & we’ll bake you a (King) cake. These are only eaten during Mardi Gras season which, by the way, is about a month long-it’s not just about one day called Fat Tuesday. A few weeks leading up to Mardi Gras is when I’d recommend tourists coming when it’s mostly locals & parades aren’t as crowded. Also Uptown Parades are “family friendly” SERIOUSLY-floats toss not only beads, but toys. The city is coming back after Covid (lots of bars & restaurants & tourists out the last couple of weeks). Come celebrate with us--it’s not everywhere one sees one’s mayor or governor dancing in the street on a regular day. But you missed one of the most important things-SECOND LINES -usually for funerals and weddings where a band is playing as a wedding party (or horse drawn funeral carriage) plays lively horn music as people dance behind the band as it ambles through neighborhoods. This is my favorite part of living here. You’ll hear one in a distance & then RUN to join in & be a part of it.

Yea, Sam, the Krewes start partying on Epiphany (Jan 6) so, while parades are now limited to 2 weeks, carnival celebrations are much longer. Great facts, though I kept stopping the vid to laugh at your pronunciations. Good job overall!

@@jenniedarling3710 it's not just how we pronounce Orleans. We have our own pronunciations for many words that don't sound like they are spelled. Burgundy, Calliope, Michoud....it's how we tell the locals from the tourists.

@@believeroftheword4627 sure I'm British so I live in country where there is a different accent every 20 miles, but I do think it's courteous to try and pronounce a place the same way as the locals, it just shows respect.

Hello, as a person born and raised in NOLA and now a tour guide who takes NOLA facts very seriously, I just want to start by saying thank you for focusing on the city. But if you are watching this as a potential NOLA tourist, please, please go elsewhere. There is SO much misinformation in this video. There is direct misinformation such as Antoine Peychaud founding Antoine's restaurant (he did NOT), and pictures of downtown that are actually Mobile, Alabama. And then there are the mispronunciations. Oh the mispronunciations :-( I won't list everything but just urge you to watch other videos. Even though I don't work for or have affiliation with Free Tours by Foot, their videos on NOLA are stellar and much more worth your time. Granted he DOES mention that he has never been to NOLA but then why do the video? As of this writing 33k people now think that ordering a Sazerac will get them a Cognac based drink. They will be rudely awakened with a mouthful of rye whiskey. (Yes, I know, I know, the drink originated with cognac but the default recipe is rye. In fact it wasn't officially named a Sazerac until it was a rye based cocktail.)
