I think you did a fantastic job with your textures! I am currently using the book so thrilled to see you did a review on it!

Another great review Claire! I was super impressed by your attempts!:) Your eye in particular looked fabulous! I'm hoping to get a copy of this book along with her other book 101 textures in charcoal and graphite pencil!

Great effort Claire, loved the eye.. It may look better in the book, and I am watching on a large TV, but I would never have guessed that Denise's were sequins. Looked like sparkling reflections on water.

You did great. Sequins probably needed more time. I thought your fur was better!

Hi Claire, have you done a fish scale, mermaid tail for metallic glossy shiny effects with using coloured pencil and also another one using gel pens? Would be wonderful to see a mermaid tail series of metallic realism effects ❤😊

Your eye, fur and lake look amazing. You aged skin looks fine. I also have the book and I tried a few things in my colourings. The bricks turned out really well. The terracotta pots for plants also were a success. The copper metal was okay...I need more practice there. I didn't get the smooth skin at all...too dark. And finally, the jeans...first try was a failure but the second try was pretty good. I like the book but like you I think I could have used more steps at times.

I was dithering about whether to get this book, ans stumbled across your review. So happy I did...I will buy the book based on what you said and showed. BTW, I think your work turned out better than the author's, (apart from the aged skin maybe). Actually, I didn't think much of the author's aging skin attempt. Anyhow, your review is well done and much appreciated by this Canadian.

Claire, everyone, every single one of those samples you tried, including the sequins, were exceptional! I think you're a little too ridged regarding the standards you have set for yourself. As you mentioned, you have no formal training nor the years of experience as the author. You did a great job and should be proud of what you were able to produce. I have this book as well and I think you have represented the authors vision by showing that the uneducated and untrained can produce beautiful work by following her methods. Often it is the lack of confidence that impedes us in our coloring and this is the type of information that helps build our skills and thus our confidence to tackle those uncolored pages we have in our libraries. If Claire can do it, I can do it! Thanks Claire, Lisa

I bought this book last May (2018), I forgot all about it, I’m going to get it back out. Btw your samples are really good, especially the eye, well done on that, about the sequins and Bokeh, I’m in the same boat with you, I just can’t seem to get the hang of it, lol. Thank you so much 🤗💕.

This book is also available in Kindle format for a very reasonable price 2.99 USD to carry with you. I'm doing practice like this whenever stuck waiting.

I'm not a beginner artist by any means, but I think this is a wonderful resource. I can see myself sitting down to practice some of the textures when I'm not feeling inspired or motivated to do original work. I don't think the goal of this book is to learn these exact textures, it's to teach you the basic steps so eventually you'll look at photographs and you'll know exactly where to start. In my opinion that's what makes it a wonderful book and a great investment.

The photos are so small. I can't imagine they represent the original size of her samples!? I am working from this book into 9 cm (3-1/2 inch) squares, which is double the size. This is an excellent book, but I do wish she would do another one and provide more steps and instructions. And it would be so helpful to provide a traceable first step so we could move quickly into practicing the technique rather than spending time redrawing.

omg some of the things in the book looked like photo's :O ... wow. I think you did really well, specially the eye is awesome :D .. ^^ I agree with the less steps she does. More steps would be better, she could've better doubled it, like 8 or something.

Your skin would be closer if you hadn’t put the dark brown. Your eye is outstanding, the fur too. Don’t think I will ever attempt sequins and don;t really care. Metals are of great interest and so is nature.
