Hey man! Around 2-3 months ago I decided I wanted to start playing piano seriously. I looked for a good KZbin channel, and crossed by yours. At the time you were with only 2k, and I usually only trust channels with at least 100k, but I said I'd give it a try. After a few videos, I understood that the only reason you didn't have so many subscribers was that you weren't noticed yet. Sure enough, every few days I saw your subs go up by a few hundreds. The reason I'm saying all this was because I wanted to thank you. First, for all of the content. I've learned so much. You teach step-by-step, go into depth at times and give an overview over piano, theory and music. Second, because the way your channel grew, inspired me to keep putting content on KZbin even though right now I don't see the growth. If someone puts out quality content, and takes the right steps, eventually he'll get noticed and grow. Thanks again for all the lessons! Have a great day:)

Thanks, really appreciate the feedback. Yea I guess all those channels with 100k + only had a few at some point. I'm glad it's helped you and hope it carries on. Yes stick with it, it was a year before anything happened with mine but be consistent and eventually things start to happen. From lots of research on 'youtubing' a lot of folks say at some point, one video may take off and then that can usually help kick start the channel

Hi PFS, I started learning as an adult eight years ago. I took private lessons up to ABRSM grade 3 classical style but the teacher, despite asking her, taught nothing of improvisation or freeing yourself from sheet music, she just seemed keen on getting people through the grades, so I gave up. Looking around KZbin for piano lessons aimed at adults returning to play after a break I stumbled upon yours, and I'm glad I did! Although aimed at beginners your lessons are everything I wish I'd had when I first started. So much so I have decided to sign up on Patreon and kind of reboot myself back into playing. Looking forward to more.

Thanks Derek! Really appreciate the support over there. Only just set it up a few days ago so there’s not much on there just yet but will of course be building up a library of stuff as fast as I can! This year I’ll putting out lots of training things and guided practice videos on KZbin and extensions to those over on Patreon. Plus have a few other ideas in the works too. Good luck rekindling your playing!

Dissecting common jazz chords and chunking them has helped a ton, you're spot on about the chunking concept. Heres an example just incase, so that we're on the same page. A) Root [ F# ] + B) Minor chord built from the minor 3rd [A + C + E = Am ] And then just trying to break big chords down into smaller chords to memorize. Oh and also realising that a lot of the jazz progressions are built on 4ths ( start on any note and find the next fourths to get a 251 C(m) F(7) Bb(maj7) Great video btw, knew a lot of this but always nice to get a refresher :)
@PianoFromScratch3 жыл бұрын
Yes building another triad from the 3rd is handy to create a 7 chord. You can also build one from the 5th which gives you a 9 voicing. There’s all sorts of things like that you can which help see these shapes

They make you feel like you're not the only person who finds a certain thing difficult, or takes a long time to understand something. Thanks so much for the help 😊👍
@PianoFromScratch3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it certainly does take a long time to understand things sometimes because to really get it, for example a theory concept, you often need a bunch of experience where you can see that in action for yourself.

Fair enough there's a lot there! The idea was for it be an overview to point people in the right direction and to have a variety of topics with different take aways for different people. I realize that the question I am about to ask maybe to knit-picky but I am prioritizing not only learning but mastering technique first before really concentrating on picking out pieces that I would like to learn. I am the type of person who learns best at doing things once I have a solid mastery of how each part works separately. For example: when my Mom and Aunt were teaching me to crochet with crochet thread I had to have them demonstrate each stitch extremely slowly so that I could see and then understand how the thread moved to create the stitch (I hope this makes sense). But after a while one month of a lot of practice on my part going slowly I was able to solve a problem my Aunt was having with a pattern that she had, both my Mom and Aunt were surprised but I felt very proud of myself. So now my question to you is I am thinking that being able to keep the fingers on the keys is ideal for playing? I am having a lot of trouble trying to keep the fingers that are not playing to get them to rest on the keys. I try to relax but ...I keep my fingers on the keys when I type at the computer. So why is this so hard for me to be able to do it on the piano? I am just recently turned 69 and after watching so many videos people in their 70's, 80's, and more can do it (and many of them just first learning (just like me). Help, please! Thank you so much for reading this, your videos are so well thought out and executed.

I started learning piano in January this year. Never played the instrument before and found this Piano From Scratch page. If you want to know just how effective his teaching is, I wrote a song on the piano called About Love in February, recorded it with a band I got together and it's now getting radio airplay. We're recording an LP at the moment for release in 2022. I'm not going to advertise our stuff here because that's not what this is about - it's about the quality of the teaching on here. I really couldn't have done it without this tuition site. True story. Fantastic tutorials on this site. Well crafted using uncluttered language. Thanks for all your help getting me started. Forgot to say, I subscribed as funkydrummer.

Thanks! It's not easy to sequence things on youtube like you would in a proper course, for example because of the way people find videos, not everyone would have seen everything and some just want something specific, just wouldn't work really here. Have you only just started? If so, I recommenced the note naming videos, there's a how to get started video covering some basic techniques to get fingers moving and some exercises to start with chords, the C major scale video is important to start using hands together then you can work through a few more majors for the time being, another first chord accompaniment video, some basic theory videos on intervals, building major and minor chords, inversions.. Feel free to have a nose around and see if anything else pops out to you. Soonish I will be doing a video with a quick list of topics to tackler

The cheapest weight ed keys on I have seen is by Donner, they're newer on the keyboard scene. I have not tried them myself and from what I have seen, they wouldn't be my first choice but they certainly look suitable to start out on. The 2nd hand market is always an option, facebook market place and sites that sell stuff locally (gumtree/craigslist type sites or whatever it is where you are). Semi weighted keys are cheaper new and will of course be much better than nothing at all, 9there's still a lot you can learn without weighted keys) but bear in mind may end up being more pricey in the long run when you eventually need to upgrade

Hello, do you recommend putting stickers on piano keys?
@PianoFromScratch3 жыл бұрын
Hi, no not really. I think you get used to rely on them. It's better to put the practice in to recognise the notes without thinking (takes a bit of time). We don't want to be hesitating finding notes. I have a couple of video on the channel, guided practice videos you play a long to testing you to try ad find them quicker. They're older and I also have a recent one going through some other practice methods too

I'm a recent beginner and determined to learn how to play piano. I'm also visually impaired so, reading sheet music will be extremely difficult. Do you have any suggestions?
@PianoFromScratch3 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's not something I have encountered as a teacher so don't have a 'go to' answer unfortunately. I'm guessing that if reading music isn't viable then , is that also true of watching people's hands in video tutorials? Of course, there is a whole host of visually impaired pianists, the greatest that comes to mind is Art Tatum who was able to play incredibly virtuosically and intimidated most other Jazz pianists of his time (and today). Feel and touch on the piano, spatial awareness and ears are really important things to train for all musicians anyway so whilst you may have your own set of challenges, you can totally still learn by focusing on those other areas. In terms of learning resources, the best thing that I would suggest is to try and get a private tutor who can tailor lessons specifically for you. Wish I had a better answer for you but unfortunately i'm not aware of anything in particular online that may be suitable or targeted at anyone with visual impairment. Please let me know if you do find something and perhaps then I can let others know if someone else asks a similar question!
@HahnJames3 жыл бұрын
@@PianoFromScratch I can still watch videos. You seem to describe what you're doing well enough, verbally, so that if I do miss something, Ican figure out what you mean. I can also replay any portion of your videos and use magnification. I'l currently considering how I can magnify sheet music to be able to see it and play it at the same time. That is, when I get to the point where I've learned it well enough to do that. I appreciate your replyl Thanks.

I feel like I'm struggling to find what's challenging enough or too much for myself at the moment... I'm a quick learner and ambidextrous... so most pieces I want to learn are too hard, but the practice to aquire the skill is to easy... and then trying to apply the practice with the piece, makes me feel like it's tug of war... Maybe I need in person lessons, just to see where my actual progress is? honestly it's very hard to scale my own progress..

@inspector-tech2 жыл бұрын
@@PianoFromScratch Aha... ok. Then in that case you probably don't need the sub since the 8030's can go down to 47hz. I have the 8020D's paired with the 7040A and it's an excellent combination. Highly recommended. By the way, I know everyone says 'This person is the best piano teacher on KZbin'... and 'That person is the best...' etc... But you truly are in a league much higher than others simply because it appears you have a good understanding of how the human brain works. This, aligned with your teaching style, makes for an almost effortless learning experience from the students perspective. Most other online tutors seem to be missing this essential skill of how most of our brains work.
