The argument against carbon wheels is not about strength or rigidity, it’s about their failure mode. When an aluminum wheel fails, they may bend, or crack, or you may even lose a chunk of it. But, they still retain the general shape of a wheel and will most likely still hang on to the tire, therefore the car can still roll to the side of the road, or back to the pits. Carbon on the other hand, shatters when it fails and it’s usually catastrophic.

At first I thought it looks a bit ridiculous. But hearing him talk about the engineering and the thought process was very interesting. You seldomly hear a company saying "We have an aftermarket product X but we thought about the consequences of saving so much weight and aerodynamic forces that we also developed a custom suspension". It's good to see someone who gets the the-whole-package-has-to-work mentality. A car is the sum of many systems and everything influences each other. ✌✌

This car looks amazing. I am always scared the entire front end is going to get torn off on a bump in the road. As stupid as it would look, I would get a version with about a four inch higher front dam on it. Maybe with a convertible electrically operated front air dam that would lower the front portion when needed ...at the track. These cars really do need a true street setting on them that takes the car way up. Beautiful car though. Mr.Northrop is clearly proud of the car they have made and he has a full right to be. Thanks Mr.Leno for showing us this beautiful car.

13:33 - ehhhh, not so sure about this. I think this may have been a slip up on Peter’s part. Carbon fibre is used in tripods specifically for its vibration dampening properties. I’m not talking travel photography ones, I mean big strong ones meant to hold, for example, telescopes. Wood tripods are used for the same reason, they can dampen vibrations very well compared to some metals like aluminium. I’m very aware it’s a completely different load case and stresses - a static tripod vs rotational mass, but ultimately the properties are the same. I think the reason some engineers don’t like it, is simply because they’re maybe alienated by the difficult manufacturing processes and cannot produce them to a spec that makes them strong. I can’t imaging Christian Koenigsegg feels the same way.. and his wheels are doing just fine setting records hah! I’m very happy to be educated better on this as I’m not an engineer and maybe I’m totally misinformed! :)
@Js161082 жыл бұрын
I am not educated on this at all so I’m saying this so someone will help me understand. He said the wheels are “ a solid piece of carbon, maybe the tripods are not completely solid and that’s the difference?
@Ganiscol2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the design I would think. I build wheels for mountainbikes and with aluminium rims you have more radial compliance to smoothen out the chatter as you bomb through rock gardens, which translates to less arm and hand fatigue at the front. Carbon rims used to be extremely stiff, transmitting all of that through the suspension and into your hands. The partial solution was to use thinner spokes with more flex to dampen the vibrations. A number of years ago the design and layup techniques changed and suddenly the carbon rims can also be more radially compliant but still laterally stiffer than alloy rims.
@albr42 жыл бұрын
I think you can't make carbon rims designed to take such extreme loads without sacrificing ride quality, they have to be super strong and super stiff, whereas aluminium you can make the spokes thinner etc without the wheel exploding under high stress.
@jmooch592 жыл бұрын
Vibration aside it’s more about durability/plasticity and repairability. If I damage a composite wheel the repair is not advantageous for a rotating part. If I bend a metallic wheel I can work that material back into shape. There are limits to the repairability for metallic structures however those limits are higher or better suited for a rotating mass. Composite repair is removing damage and replacing with new. The integrity of that repair is highly dependent on process i.e. low repeatability. Metals still have their purpose.

I am not sure how I feel about this car. He talks about the seriousness of materials and industrial process and then hasn't resolved the rear wing's hydraulics (just hid them). He talks about the weight reduction and the added performance to the car,, and then goes on saying "I would have liked a functional roof scoop but,,, here is a fake one." I don't know if this is a limitation of budget or lack on engineering or just gave-up as it is to complicated. These are two things that should have been resolved before showing the car as you sell your company as an engineering solution firm.

Only thing I would have kept was telling movable wing,extend it if needed, but mclaren did it fr a reason,so for me it's an integral part of its performance and handling.
