So , you suspect that 1 spot on the edge of the larger piston may be pinching the top compression ring . Its possible you could have a bent rod , and/or damaged wrist pin hole or rod journal . I dont know about yours , but , Most of the electric compressor motors are not rated continuous duty motors , they are made to kick on , pump up and kick off = they cant tolerate the high temperature (over heating ) of continuous running . For years it has been recommended to use a gas engine compressor for sand blasting = a continuous duty motor . About 4 years ago a friend of mine bought a new electric compressor to do some sand blasting , I told him what was going to happen , he didnt believe me , he believed me when it got hot and stopped working , and wouldnt work after it cooled off anymore . Myself , I think your doing the right thing tearing down the motor and compressor , because if you dont , it could turn into a much bigger problem later , and a much more expensive new compressor .

I feel sorry for the Dayton compressor. Unprotected due to being wired and plumbed wrong. The valve plate is another failure due to the compressor being started against a load. Fix the problems that led to failure.

the reed does not care about any of that. it was a bad design that was change many years ago. the reeds are riveted in now instead of being screwed together. tatro
