Just back from the dealer. Rode the Fat Bob 107 and 114. The 107 was just like this video said: quicker reaction from the motor. Not better feel, just quicker reaction. Twist throttle, engine tries to give you what you ask for. If the “quality of the torque” doesn’t matter, the 107 will do the job just fine. No complaints. It felt decent. I didn’t feel like anything was missing. However, riding the 114? The quality of the engine feel was better. The 114 seems to have a bit more depth in the motor. Turn that throttle and you feel the smoothness in that depth. The 107 feels like the motor is being told what to do, and it complies because it has to. The 114 made me feel as one with the motor. I would think, I would like some more power, and the bike had a direct link to my entire being and we responded in unison. If I didn’t know about the 114, the 107 would have been wonderful. But unfortunately (or fortunately) I rode that 114. And now, that’s all I want. That’s how it felt for me anyway. YMMV.

Seems as though a tune could smooth out the 107, no?
@dylanmonaghan11 ай бұрын
@@brentharrington9235 Smooth out? It was plenty smooth. Have you had a chance to compare the two motors on the Fat Bob? If I could find another analogy, it would be like driving a Honda Accord with the 4 cylinder engine. Smooth, stable, perfect…yet….if you want to accelerate with two adults in the car, it feels a little heavy…like the engine wants to please you, but just not enough displacement to make the power. Drop into a V8 with 4 people and do the same thing and feel the power just move through you and the vehicle. Effortlessly. Acceleration? Tons of it. And room to spare. So it’s not about smoothness…it’s about available power on demand I guess. Just a different world.
@brentharrington923511 ай бұрын
@@dylanmonaghan when I say smooth out, I am using tuning jargon. I was referring to smoothing out the torque curve. The explanation provided by yourself and author of the video indicates to me that the power delivery is very immediate with the 107. All I am saying is this can easily be adjusted on a dyno to suit the preference of the rider.

Can't say I've ridden the 114 but, honestly, I've never gotten on my 107 and thought "You know what this needs? More torque and power!" I find the Street Bob just always has enough power to bring a smile to my face. My only other gripe with the 114 is I find the colour schemes on the Street Bob look a bit too "much", I like simple and clean aesthetics' on my bikes. Personally, I think it's a case of buy the one you can afford and the one that looks the best to your eyes. You won't be disappointed with either of them.

In the last few years I have had the 88 in a DWG, the 103 in both a SG and a DWG. I now have a 2019 RG with the 114 and a stage 2 with a cam. I can say that I love each motor. The quickest was the 103 in my 2013 DWG. Loved the sound of my 88 in the 2001 DWG with short shot pipes. The 114 pulls in every gear and is actually fun up above 70 to 80 mph. To each his own. I have enjoyed every bike I have ever owned, and that is a lot of bikes in 50 years of riding.

When picking my Heritage, the 114 sounded more attractive because of the bigger size, but really it's only like a ~100cc difference. (1753cc to 1868cc). For that slight difference, I opted for the bike I liked the LOOK of more, so I ended up with a chromed out 107 Heritage. Good video though, good to have a rider's side-by-side take on the two. As a Motor head, builder, performance oriented person my preference is the shorter 4.375 stroke of the 107 to the 4.500 stroke of the 114. It is however still under square even with the S&S 4.250 big bore jugs. Rod to stroke ratio is good approximately 1.8 in either 107 or 114. Better than the twin cams. Many of the old larger twin cams had a really long 4.625 stroke. Big fan of the M8 in general. Overall best HD engine to date IMO.

Weight wise from what I read there is only a negligible increase in weight going to the 114. I ride a 96ci bagger and that has plenty of power up to about 110mph. For my old 96” Ultra Classic, the only downside was on the motorway for that overtake in the fast lane, just no quick acceleration. I prefer the roads shown in the video for a leisurely pace to where I am going, whether the U.K. or E.U. Now another bike is needed later this year and the debate of whether another twin cam 103” or an M8 107” Ultra Limited to buy has got me thinking. I doubt I would not get anymore satisfaction out of a 114” or 120” engine mostly due to riding more on my own or within our mixed bike club.

I can't stand people who use a motorcycle or a car to show off with.Being ostentatious is wrong. I started riding in 1964 and until the late 70's motorcycle was a lot of fun, but I think about that time we were hit by a stupidity bomb, because all those wonderful do everything well standard bikes, started gathering cobwebs in the show rooms and the public suddenly started wanting horrible , posing cruiser junk and it has gotten worse with each passing day. In the old days us bikers traveled many miles to see the great motorcycle races. Now some of the good tracks are gone or even those that are open like Daytona , these showboating fucking fools don't go to the track. They stand around , drink beer and look at a bunch of half naked Bimbos. I know people who go hundreds of miles every march to Daytona. When they come back I excitingly ask them who won the big race. I get fucking dumb answers like "Oh I didn't go to the races What did you do? I watched people parade up and down with their fucking junk Harleys making a lot of noise, each one trying to look more ridiculous than the other!

Good video - I’ve wondered too, what could be the difference(s) between with just a few ci’s? Nice job with this video - thanks. Unfortunately, there is a BIGGER question now facing Harley-Davidson.... Sales world-wide are shrinking - people 18 - 40 aren’t drawn to the heavy iron, big growl, and tough-guy image that HD.successfully marketed for many years. I don’t think very many people will dispute the almost cult-like following that HD has enjoyed since it’s rebirth from near-bankruptcy about 25 years ago.... but those days are rapidly disappearing. Just ask anyone (particularly millennials) what they expect to see whenever a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rumbles by.... 3 words come to mind: “old”, “gray”, “fat” - this is now the image of the Harley rider. It won’t matter if HD keeps making bigger & bigger versions of its iconic V-Twin.... today’s young riders want modern styling, nimble and F-A-S-T motorcycles. HD’s loyal followers are declining in numbers year by year. If HD keeps pinning their hopes on larger & larger V-Twin designs they will soon have no customers left. Today’s young people don’t want to buy a grandpa bike.
@MrDarcy-OlMan6 жыл бұрын
M Smith Very good points. I know Harley-Davidson are planning to launch a range of bikes in the coming years, some of which are going to be aimed at the younger rider. What I don’t know is what these bikes will be like and whether they get it right. Good point about old grey and fat - I’m only two of those!
@stephen56655 жыл бұрын
Sales have declined for all brands not just Harley. The new generation kids today are not buying bikes. They are not even buying cars. Even car manufacturers are trying to appeal to them. Most of them are lazy, dont want to work, and just want everything given to them.

I dont know what you are talking about? I told u I bought a bike every other year sometimes every year because I got 20% off and the private party values were pretty good. So I was able to ride for free. It has nothing to do with quality or tolerances for me. It was a matter of economics. Not anything else. If I worked at Yamaha I would do the same. This no longer holds true for HD. There is a flooded used bike market right now. Ten years 15 years ago you had to get on a list to buy a new bike and were paying over msrp. Now they are used boat anchors. If I worked at Honda I would do the same. I'm not a hater. Just speaking about facts. If I had no 20% discount I would be buying a Triumph, BMW or an Indian. Brand loyalty means nothing to me and that includes cars also. If you love HD good for you, and I wish you the best. If you ride any brand and you believe it's worth your money, more power to you. People forget how many foreign auto plants are in the U.S that employs hundreds of thousands of well paid employees. HD has plants in Brazil, India, Thailand thanks to their tariffs on imported bikes. Then people get pissed at Trump for trying to level the playing field. Idk if tariffs are a good idea for anyone, but this is the world we live in.
