Abrasion Resistant actually means Hard to Sharpen, Hardness is directly proportional to Brittleness and Corrosion Resistance is important to people who mistreat and neglect their tools. People spend a lot of money on knives because they don't really know what they want to use their knife to do, there isn't any perfect knife for every possible job or no kitchen would have more than one.

well said Ocel Black ! but the most important part for me is a FLAT spine right to the tip , fixed , and 1095 (so easy to sharpen). its my only blade that cost me under $30-40 thirty years ago and the ONLY one i will ever need for my wilderness need. (camping /trekking) so so solid and i blued mine.

I have mostly carbon steel knives. I do have to oil them about every 3 months I bought 1 knife with CPM-3V, for a little better corrosion resistance. I'm not sure I'm buying one of these super stainless steel knives. CPM-3V, while not being truly stainless, is tougher than all the fancy stainless steels, and won't really rust unless you don't wipe it dry. It certainly wouldn't make a good dive knife. Still, if I was in a survival situation, I'm pretty sure I'd want my Ontario SP10 Marine Raider Bowie in 1075 steel. That knife is nearly indestructible.

1095 will not keep a keen edge as long as specialty steels, just won't. But (a big but), is strength. (For me), strength is important. I can sharpen my steel at night, but not much good if it is broken in half. And for me a small hatchet is good for splitting wood. Save the blade for blade stuff, is my feeling. For my folding knives I really like M-390, zdp-189, M-4, s-90, etc.

never experienced any flaw splitting 6" lugs with my 9.5 1095 fixed blade , never ! and so easy to get a razor sharp edge on it on the field in couples of minutes. the only draw is its easy to rust , but with proper care you will never get a micron of rust on the knife ever. (mine is 30 years old one)

@@markhamilton3215 Ontario switched all their 1095 knives to 1075 for a reason. 1095 is very difficult to properly heat treat. Only a few knife manufacturers can treat it such that it isn't very brittle. 1075 is a lot more forgiving. It won't hold an edge as long, but I prefer it for a knife I'm going to beat on.

I bought the Glock knife, and returned it. If you have XXL hands, it just doesn't work. The grip is also quite slippery, but that can be fixed. For most people, it's one of the best knives for the money. Unfortunately, they no longer sell the flat back version. You can only get the sawback version these days.

Holding an edge, retaining one are excellent properties, but putting an edge on is also really important if you actually use a knife. Some steels that come from the factory with a terrific edge are a PTA to sharpen once they need sharpening. The steel you want also depends on whether you use and maintain the knife yourself, or take it, or send it somewhere for maintenance.

well said theeddorian. Im not a behind the desk trekker (when I was much young) and still have my 1095 fixed blade that NEVER EVER let me down and was a dream to sharpen and get a RAZOR sharp edge like any others blade my fellows had with them. Cheap and EXTREMELY reliable steel. In fact U.S. Military still make fixed blade from 1095 theses days and MANY (not most) Operators still prefer to use the 1095 for its sharpening capability.

A lot of it is argumentative just for the sake of argument lol. There are a lot of differences in steel and it depends on what you plan to use the knife for what steel you’ll lean towards. A lot of people tend to overlook the heat treating and geometry of the knife. Bottom line is it’s all preference.

You want toughness for a survival knife. 1095 is very low in toughness thats why manufacturers like Esee keeps it soft. Large survival knives will mostly be used on non abrasives like wood where dulling happens due to Apex damage not wear. Steels like 5160 and A8mod would be good choices as they have high levels of toughness at 58/59hrc and very easy to sharpen. Sharpen ability is important.
@TheModernSurvivalist
@TheModernSurvivalist 2 жыл бұрын
we also need to have another look at what "soft" means. 1095 at 55 HRC would be considered soft by todays market, but thats a market that for over 90% of its population doesnt use the thing much at all, let alone know how to sharpen a knife. 56-57 HRC is as high as Id go for a 1095 survival blade, its not a tank but consideralby toughter than 58 or 60, it will hold an edge or and it will be pretty easy to sharpen.
@concealmenttraining9371
@concealmenttraining9371 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheModernSurvivalist they use 1095 because it's cheap and available. 1095 is low in toughness regardless of hardness. 5160 and A8mod at 59hrc will be almost 4 times tougher. Harder Apex means better edge stability at a lower edge angle. Higher toughness steels hold there edges longer on non abrasives like wood, they tend to roll whereas 1095 chips unless you keep the edge angle high or ad a micro bevel. 1095 is just not ideal... it is what it is.

CPM-3V is an excellent survival knife steel. Unfortunately, it's very expensive. It's partially stainless, and as tough or tougher than 1095. From what I've heard, rust can be easily removed with a rag. The only aspect that gives me pause, is having to sharpen it. Some people say it sharpens easily, some say it's very tough to sharpen. All that said, I'm not sure sharpening and rust matter that much for a survival knife. A survival knife is meant to keep you alive for 1 to 2 weeks at the most, until you get rescued, or you're able to rescue yourself. IMO, a survival knife should be a long, thick spined fixed blade, made out of a steel that's as indestructible as it gets. 1075-1085 or CPM-3V would be my choices. Combined with a quality multi tool, you can do pretty much anything, self defense included. If you want to live in the woods like a mountain man, your knife choice might be different.

There's a lack of survival knives in AUS-8 and AUS-10. I've been looking for a fixed blade in AUS-10 for a long time. All I can find is folders. Cold Steel used to make a great SRK in AUS-8, but they discontinued it. Steel Will Is the only other company I can find with a reasonably thick AUS-8 survival knife. There's something to be said for a low maintenance blade that rolls instead of chips, and is easy to resharpen.

@DDDYLN
@DDDYLN Жыл бұрын
@@clownworldresidentii5184 from the research I've done, VG-10 is a bit harder, and more prone to chipping. Don't get me wrong, VG-10 is a great steel, depending on your application. I wanted just 1 stainless, bend-but-don't-break knife, that is easy to sharpen in the field. Most of my knives are high carbon steel, which require oiling every 3-4 months, and will rust in a wet environment. They're by far better than stainless survival knives, but it's good to have 1 good one in the trunk/tailgate of your vehicle.

Survival knife steel ... OK this is an interesting subject and my thoughts are a bit complicated. The steel needs a minimum of 8% chromium (or 7% with CPM), and sub 1.2% carbon. The steel needs to have high toughness, good edge holding, and resist rusting My preferred Survival knife steels, CPM-3V, CPM-Cru Wear, AEB-L, AUS-8 (Not 8Cr13MoV because of bad quality control), 14C28N. I am surprised that 1095 is as popular as it is, I am also surprised that 8670 is not as popular as I want

What?! 1095 is much tougher than N690! I will take an Esee 5 or 6 or TOPS 107C over your knife any day. On a toughness scale of 1-10, N690 is a 4 while 1095 is a 7! Furthermore, your stainless steels are far more brittle than carbon steels! While your stainless steels will snap under pressure while a properly differentially heat-treated carbon steel, like 1095, will flex and return to true. As for rusting, it very easy to oil or wax carbon steel to keep it from doing so.
@mrdarren1045

For those of us who live in very wet or humid countries you could oil your 01 or 1095 every day and it will still rust. I live in North West England and it is very wet here. I don't go for stainless steels but I also avoid high carbon. For my needs tool steels like A2 or sleipner seem to fall into a happy medium. But if lived in a drier climate I'd also probably stick with a good heat treated a 1095.
