In this episode, we go over 20 MOA bases (Or really any kind of canted base, for that matter - there are other options besides 20 MOA!) What do they actually do, how do they work, how do they actually affect your scope, why would anyone actually ever need one and what are some times when it could actually be the wrong move for your particular firearm and optic combo. Heck - your gun may already have 20 MOA built into the rail it came with! These types of bases can be a great practical tool when used the right way and in the right context. Check it out and let’s us know whether or not you use a canted base and why!
As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

Love the video! I have a couple of buddies that bought 20 moa rails and the reality is unless you are shooting a lower velocity, very long shot, you don't need it. Plain and simple. For most folks, the more that you can simplify your shot, the better you'll shoot.

This resolved my issue. I've got a Leupold Mark 5HD 7-35 and had a zero cant scope mount on a Tikka Tac A1, 6.5 CM. After zeroing the scope, I only had about 14 mills of adjustment on a 30 mill capable scope. I intend on shooting past 1200 yards. A 30 mill base has been ordered. Thanks for the info.

May be a dumb question, but im gonna ask. I just picked up a 6.5 creedmoor, I checked the picatinny rail screws for tightness, they were very loose. I went ahead and removed the screws to clean and chase the threads before putting the 20 MOA rail back on. When I removed the rail, there was a significant coating of oil under the pic rail? Is that normal? I just watched a MDT video and their shooter said he put oil beneath the picatinny rail?

I needed a serious revision of my thinking, which was backwards. It's okay to have a 20 MOA rail, even on a hunting rifle. The big key is if you have enough downward travel in the turrets. Many times, with a 0 MOA rail, you may still be dialing up to get zero. A 20 MOA cant will give back some of those up clicks. So, it's a matter of preference and also the job for the rifle. If hunting deer at 300 yards and in, 0 MOA rail is just fine.

You guys hit on alot of the major points for using a canted base. I am the 22lr guy, I shoot 300 yards and bought a 150 moa base to get out to 500 plus yards (I know 150 is a lot), I appreciate the comments about being optically centered looking thru the scope. I agree most people won't need a base unless they are running out of adjustments using their turrets. Good info on moa/mils simply divide by 2 to get your up/down usable numbers.

@@aquadonkey. I honestly haven't tried to bring it in, I'd imagine I might be able to get as close as 75 yards using all I have in the scope. Personally I would just use one of my other rifles that are zero'ed at 50 yards. I kinda like to keep the 600 yard zero set and just shoot long range with that rifle, the 150 moa scope base I can dial back to 0 moa or flat with the barrel, doable, but a lot of dailing, lol

good info. have a question tho. i just put a 20moa base on my 06. won't be going to the range for a while but wanted to see if i could preset it kinda close first. could you please tell me if my process is right or if i am way off? to calculate the approximate zero from bore level i used strelok app to find what distance would require 20moa elevation. plugged in a 1 yard zero with a scope height of zero. it showed 710 yards needs a 20 moa adjustment. so if i put my 2½" high scope on with zero elevation would that put poi at 2½" high at 710 yards? does that work right? if so i can plug in the right numbers and adjust for the scope height and preset for any distance. or if i'm wrong i will just have to wait for range day and start from scratch

Great video, Question, If you have a new scope/rifle with a 20 moa rail attached, the first thing you do, even before boresighting etc, is to click down the scope by 20 moa/5.8mil to adjust for having the 20 moa rail attached?And only then you go ahead and boresight and zero your rifle, which of course could mean you may have to further fine tune up/down depending on scope height etc. Is this correct? (assuming you have mounted everything else correctly etc etc) I know some of you say you should always boresight first thing, but I dont understand this because you already know that you are "wrong" by 20 moa so why not adjust for that first thing? That should at least make your initial settings closer to the correct settings? Please comment
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 3 жыл бұрын
It might make them closer, but it’s not going to be perfect like you eluded to. If that is just part of your procedure it’s certainly not going to hurt anything, but what very likely may happen is that you dial in that 20 MOA before doing anything else, then when you go to bore sight you have to take a bit of that out. It’s a horse a piece. Whether the optic starts at optical center or a predetermined spot, it’s going to need to be adjusted anyway!

It took me awhile to understand this MOA scope business as I am new to shooting , 6 months so far. When you install a rail with say 20 MOA it's not the scope that tilts down it's the barrel that tilts up. So a scope with say 60 MOA total max. elev. adj. and a 20 MOA rail will tilt the barrel up 20 MOA and the top half of the scope adj. which is 30 MOA allows the barrel to have a total of 50 MOA adj. as it is already adjusted 20 MOA because of the rail. The barrel moves people not the scope. 😃

Hey guys, if you zero your rifle right at the bottom of the elevation range, is there any downsides? The forums say it can hurt the scope, but what’s the opinion there
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 3 жыл бұрын
You would be zeroed at a spot that isn't in the optical system's most ideal spot - the best optical quality you'll get out of a riflescope is right in the middle of its travel. You also are leaving yourself with zero room for error should you ever need to make a click or two further in elevation - you're already bottomed out - and you're going to have much less windage travel at the extremes of the elevation, too. It's really not a great spot to be in.

Are you hoping to have one mount and swap scopes in and out of it, or different mounts with different scopes in them and you would swap the whole mount/scope combos in and out on the gun? If you're hoping to do the first option, then switching scopes in and out of one mount is about the same level of effort/time regardless of which mount you get. Any of the mounts you've mentioned should be fine. If the second option, then having a mount that's quick-release like the Scalarworks mount, or an ADM mount, LaRue, etc would be good. For what it sounds like you're doing, don't worry about getting 20 MOA - a 0 MOA base will do just fine.

And just have the capability to shoot long distance? If that's the case, why would someone NOT get a 20 MOA base? Thank you
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue most people have is zeroing the center crosshair at closer ranges with canted bases - usually a 20 MOA base on most rifles with a scope with a decent amount of adjustment have no issue zeroing at 100 yards still, but significantly closer or with a significantly more canted base, it can become impossible. Accuracy at close ranges is a different story altogether since you can still technically shoot accurately at closer ranges, you might just need to hold on a different spot in your reticle, dial differently, etc. There are tricks to overcoming a lack of adjustment in some way or another with your reticle, it just depends on whether or not needing to do these tricks is acceptable to the end user!

I have a 20 moa base. The negative side of this is that i am unable to zero it at 100 or even 200 yards, because it reached the max bottom range of my scope adjustments

had the same problem and it was because the scope only had a max. elev. adj. of 40 MOA or 20 MOA up or down. In my case the rail was 30 MOA which means it would most likely zero at around 1000 yds.

I just realized what 20MOA base actually means on my Tikka T3X tactical and installing 20MOA canted American Defense Recon mount on it. I went to bore sight my Burris Signature HD 5-25x50 in my house to what I estimated to be a 150 yard distance and my elevation turret bottomed out just as crosshairs went onto the Center of the target to my complete surprise. And I haven’t even been to the range yet for some group shooting. How am I gonna sight that rifle now? Or do I need to sight it at longer range, let’s say 200-250 yards instead? My intention was to do mostly long range shooting anyway with occasional hunting trip in between so maybe it’s not a bad thing.

A question from the admin or any 1 on this channel is if a sope has 120 moa's top to bottom then some experts says that to utilize all moa's u must have a 60 moa base So now how to find in millimeter or in inches that my scope base has 60 moa's Those experts also says that from rifle top (where the rail, ring base then rings r attached for scope) to the scope base u must have at least 1.5 inches gap or distance or height Any video reference or answer here

You most certainly would NOT want a 60 MOA base in this case. If your rifle required even one click of adjustment in the other direction to get zeroed, then you would have nothing left and wouldn't be able to sight in your rifle. All rifle and scope combos are going to use up some of the available adjustment just to get zeroed in due to natural misalignments that occur in manufacturing and mating all the pieces together. The other thing to consider is that an optic is not at its best in terms of optical quality when it is at the very extremes of its travel. The best situation for your optical quality is when the scope is at its optical center, so moving it 60 MOA away from that and having it there for your zero would not be very good. As for scope height, we have a podcast we just released on that as well - just mount your scope at the height that is most comfortable for you when shooting behind the scope and that isn't running into the gun. Pretty simple. If you can't get it just right without running into the gun, you may need to use things like a cheek riser or adjustable stock to get your head in the right spot, but don't sweat optic height too much.

I was asking for suggestions for a scope mount and a guy was adamant that I needed a 20 MOA base. I was looking for a scope mount for the diamond back tactical 4-16 to put on my 270 for hunting. Nothing really past 400 meters. Still was determined that I need one. Update: I don’t.

If you want to maximize your scopes potential you have to put a base on that is half the total elevation of your scopes travel. Ex. If your scope has 80 mins of elevation you put a 40 moa base
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 3 жыл бұрын
Tim McFarland not necessarily - there are a lot of cases where doing something like that could actually put you in a worse situation. Maybe even not being able to get zeroed. It’s all situation and application dependent. If you’re going to be hunting or shooting at intermediate distances, there is usually no need for any kind of canted base at all.

That's about the way I see it as well. I'll go 5 or 10 under that depending on what's available to be sure that I can get zeroed at 100. I like my scopes setup so that I have a few clicks under 0 but not much more than that. It 1, eliminates the need for a zero stop, 2, allows me to use all my elevation. What's the point of having a scope with 110moa of elevation if you could only utilize half of it? With that said, there's no point in having more scope than you need. The scope needs to match the round and distance you're shooting. 300prc will make it past 1760. 😉

There is no need to get the scope super low - just mount it up at a comfortable height for you to get behind when shooting. fractions of an inch in scope height won't have any appreciable difference down range.

why aren't scopes made with most of the MOA built into elevation? For instance, if the scope has 80 MOA total why not have 60 MOA in elevation and 20 to dial down? Whoever dials down 20 MOA?
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 11 ай бұрын
It's impossible to "Build this into the scope" because all rifles, rings/mounts, calibers, zero distances, etc that affect where the reticle will ultimately be zeroed are different. When we talk about riflescopes and total elevation adjustment, we usually just assume that the reticle is zeroed somewhere near the middle for easy math and easier explanation in theory, but in reality, the reticle is almost never zeroed perfectly in the middle of the travel. There are microscopic barrel-to-receiver and other misalignments that need to be compensated for, scope over bore height that needs to be compensated for, zero distance, etc. If your zero, with a totally flat one-piece base is pretty close to the center of the scope's travel, you can "Build in" some extra adjustment and take up that effectively "Useless" space in the rest of the travel with a canted base like a 20 MOA base, That will physically cant your riflescope down 20MOA which, when compensated for with your elevation adjustment, would effectively do exactly what you described. Hope this helps!

All bullets drop as soon as they exit the barrel. Gravity. Most people zero on the the first intersection of bullet path and optical view. With a moa base you zero on the second intersection.
@badaceblackbelt
@badaceblackbelt 2 жыл бұрын
That’s not really how that works. Depending on distance and sight height, most people zero on either the arc peak or the second (downward) intersection no matter what base or mount they are using. The only time you would zero on the upward intersection is if you are zeroing under 100 yards or if your optic is very far from the bore.
