The 300prc was best described from 3:00-3:30. The way that I describe my 300prc is it's a 300wm with all the chamber slop removed and a much longer neck to hold onto the long high BC bullets and not set them deep in the case. I'd say that the 300prc is 20% better than a 300wm today. When more factory ammo choices come to market I'd say that the 300prc would be 40% better than the 300wm. Thats not saying that the 300wm is a slouch or obsolete in any way. I love my model 70 in 300wm but my 300prc is more betterer 👍😉

@kirkmartin22232 жыл бұрын
@@revolutionmarine5693 a "7-mag" or 7mm Remington magnum and 7-300prc are 2 totally different animals. So I don't understand what you are trying to say. Do you have an optic with a dial elevation turret? If so....the "lazer beams" of my youth are trumped by heavy high BC bullets.....unless you are shooting 400yds and closer. Set a 180gr or 197gr 7mm bullet in a 7mag and half the weight of those bullets will be sitting below the neck shoulder junction eating up case capacity. Same can be said for the 300wm vs 300prc comparison. The PRC cartridges hold long high BC bullets in the neck of the case.
@2S1L3NT2 жыл бұрын
20% is a stretch... But if you like it more, you like it more. But comparing the 2, the 300 wm can still do everything the 300 prc can. I load 225 ELDs in my 300 wm and my velocities are faster than my 300 prc with like for like loadings. I've not reached pressure signs with either, but they have different barrels and the PRC barrel is a 27 vs a 26 in WM so there are variances that factor enough to not compare them side by side in my case. If getting into one for the first time, having neither, I'd choose which has ammo available, and is cheaper to shoot. They're that similar. Some chambers can make the 300 wm a challenge with heavyweight bullets, and most will be single fed unless it came with CIP mag length from the factory, but it can be done.
@kzimmerman3113 жыл бұрын
The one thing that was forgotten in this talk is the twist rate from that factory. Faster twist spec vs other 30 cals is what makes it work better for the heavies. Also work noting, Lapua makes brass for this beast and the military is using the PRC to some extent.

Ryan's comment sums it up for me. "At present, there aren't any bullet offerings in the cartridge that I like". I agree. The ELD-X may be nice for long range specific applications, but is not a good performer at closer ranger higher velocity impacts, perhaps such as a bull moose at 75 yards, or a bull elk close in the timber. I don't deliberately choose long range shots. I like to be prepared for any opportunity within reason. Nosler Accubonds or Partitions generally perform well out to 600 yards, with adequate velocity to expand while having integrity for any close range shot as well. Much the same as Ryan states as his preferred limit of 600 yards for hunting, I feel I can cover anything from the muzzle to 600 better with other cartridge and bullet options. If the ELD-X could handle high impacts better, maybe that could change things, but a lot of hunters are reporting penetration issues with the ELD-X up close.

I get that the PRC will do the same at slightly lower pressure, but I can't buy PRC at every store. The stores that do bring in PRC sells quickly, and is marginally more expensive than the WM, but also reloading isn't cheaper in the PRC. It's the same price as the WM. So for me, same money to reload, unable to buy in store and no noticeable increase in performance - whether hunting or target. A year and a half ago, Matt at CRS Firearms was doing specific builds. For example, he built and load tested a .243 for AP rounds. He had already talked about hunting rifles. His favorite to hunt with is his SCAR heavy, which is, of course, 7.62X51 mm NATO. Compact, easy to use, and certainly fine for the dense forests of the public hunting land that he now uses in Wisconsin (the c stands for Coloma.) So, he wanted to build a sniper rifle, something that could possibly be used by military. He had choices from .308 W and up. Originally, he had chosen .300 WM because it has already been used, very effective, ammo everywhere, nearly as ubiquitous as .308 W. He could not find the action he wanted. But he was able to get a .300 PRC action. So, he built a .300 PRC with a carbon fiber wrapped barrel. He had accuracy and performance problems that were frustrating and I think he eventually worked them out. First two shots would be great. Third shot would wander way off, like the scope moved or something else like that. Problems you normally only have with, say, a Mossberg Patriot in the factory synthetic stock. I can say that because I have 3 Mossberg pieces and one of them is a Patriot that performs so much better in the MDT chassis I put it in. And at the end of the day, would he hunt with it? No, and not just because it is purpose built for something different and he is not a long range hunter. It is so much recoil and it is a heavy rifle. Ironically, his SCAR heavy is lighter. I am sure everyone here knows the heavy description just means it is .308 W and not .223 Rem. It could be used for longer range and bigger game hunting. And if I felt the need to hunt with something more powerful than my lovely .308 rifles, I would likely go with a .300 WSM, like Mark and not because he uses it, although he is the one to give me exposure and insight into it. (Sorry for the run-on sentence.) It is, to me, a fat .308 W. A medium action rifle that is less influenced by the wind and a short enough rifle to be truly portable. I also see it in action at Rogee Productions, where they hunt in public land in New Zealand and there is no getting within 100 yards of the skiddish ungulates there. Most shots are a few hundred yards. It reminds me of the state drawn lottery hunts in my state where you can hunt mule deer. The description of the hunt and the area is to expect snow and ice (high desert) and shots of at least 200 yards (high desert, not a lot of trees.) Pretty much all still hunting. Would I change to .300 PRC for a 200 yard hunt? No. The factory load that I have has energy good to about 500 yards. That is plenty good, especially for the dense forests I hunt. But intellectually, it is a worthy pursuit.

The 300PRC can also be thought of as smaller/faster as well. the 6mm and 6.5 offerings are smaller and faster for say 1000 yards but when you start talking 1mile or 2000 yards, this is the smaller/faster compared to say the 50BMG and 338 calibers and would have significantly cheaper and more comfortable to shoot.

In all honesty I'm not a fan of the 7.62mm/30cal family but if I was to buy anything in it, it would be the 300PRC... It really is a cool cartridge. I have a 6.5PRC and if they necked that up to a 7mm I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Great video as always keepem coming guys!!!

I own 3 of the 7mm's and for the most part a 300 PRC necked down to 7mm wouldn't be much different if at all as a 28 Nosler If I'm hunting a big animal that's what I'm shooting. I've already shot 3 moose in Alaska with the 28 Nosler and an elk in Colorado it was like lightning hit them so it's definitely worth checking out if you do any hunting for stuff like that.

The 30 Sherman mag is a better cartridge than the 300 prc. Eliminate a 300rum if u want a more efficient round that eliminates more recoil. Saves more barrels and 300rum Performance. Plus u can shoot 300 prc in a 30 Sherman mag and fire form your cases.

Which is the better round for moose in open country that requires shooting at ranges of 400 - 600 yards? I was thinking the 300, but with the recent advent of the 7mm prc I wondered if it could do the job with the benefit of less recoil.

I like the idea of a 300 PRC enough that I'm thinking of buying one.Ive had a 300 WM,and loved it,but I believe a magnum is better used to push heavy bullets faster than lighter ones,and because of that,I fell in love with the 200 gr. Partitions.But,I always wanted a good spritzer in 220 gr.,and at the time,nobody made one,and true,I may have had to seat it into powder space,eventhough I had it in a Ruger No 1,so I was seating my bullets out.WhatI like about the PRC is the fact it's designed to shoot heavier loads,and it has no belt,so I see it as answering the problem that I had with the Win Mag.Both are great cartridges,so since I know and love the Win Mag,why not now try the PRC.I say,there can never be to many cartridges to experiment and play with.

Could you achieve the same ballistics by using a 300wsm on a long action with more freebore and seat the same bullets out to the lands? I realize If running comparisons from factory vs factory the prc favors. But in my thoughts you could still achieve the same idea in a full custom WM or wsm chamber job

Poop, hype job, expensive ammo. Funny Hornady makes the 6.5 PRC and Winchester comes out with the 6.8 Western which is the best short action with magnum numbers at 500 yards and the 6.8 Western is hitting harder at 500 yards by 17% then the 6.5 PRC. The numbers aren't much more then others they are trying to replace. My .300 wm shooting out of the Christensen MPR 26 inch barrel at 1:10 no fancy BS is beating the numbers of the .300 PRC except foot pounds with their heavir rounds but dude im not out hunting elephants

The belted case design of the .375 H&H Mag was designed to prevent cases from swelling in the chamber. This was a big deal when hunting dangerous game in Africa. I’d say the belted design is not “antiquated”, but there are downsides to it (namely case life for reloading). The reality is that 7mm PRC offers better retained velocity and energy at distances beyond 500 yards. At 500 yards the 212gr 300 PRC only has 200 ft-lbs more energy than the 175gr 7mm. Combined with the higher BC of the 7mm at lighter weights makes it the obvious choice for long range shooting/hunting. The 7mm PRC has plenty of energy to get the job done within 500yds and out preforms the .300 PRC at distance.

For people who shoot factory ammo, the prc absolutely makes the win mag obsolete. If looking at just hornady ammo.. a 7mm rem mag 162 grain eld x does better than a 300 win mag 200 grain eld x. So if you want to get better than a 7mm rem mag you have to scoot past a 300 win mag and go to a prc 212 grain eld x. So why would you want to shoot a 300 win mag with more recoil if your not getting more performance. I'd rather shoot a 7mm. But I ordered a 300 prc because I wanted more energy out at distance. If I'm going to have more recoil I might as well have the performance to go with it. That being said, to hand loaders, you can get similar results with a 300 win mag. But that is the beauty of the prc. It was made to give factory guys match ammo in a match chamber. Can't wait till mine gets here. Good talk fellas.

The eldx shoots extremely well from my 7mm-08. However I ran a box through a chrono and they had an extreme spread of 211fps. Also I hit a pronghorn at 50yds and hit the front shoulder and the bullet flew apart without fatal penetration. Round 2 at 225 behind the shoulder and it was great. I will probably go back to accubonds.
@Nick-sx6jm3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wouldnt consider anything hornady makes as a good hunting bullet with the exception of the vmax for varmints. Their eldx is almost identical to their match bullets which are too soft for game and come apart easily especially at faster velocities. Much better off with the offerings from nosler, swift, and federal.

.300 PRC will dominate the new shooter category for its class. Go to Cabela's and you won't look hard to find a .300PRC but look for a .300WM or similar and they will be much harder to find. Tika, Browning, Savage, and Christian Arms all have it. If you are looking for a first time gun in that class of chamberings this is the way go to. If you are not new you don't NEED to buy it, but you may want to!

The throat was changed to match the actual. 308 caliber on the rifles instead of the .315 or so. A few more grains of powder with a steeper shoulder angle for longer ogive bullets for a higher B.C. for paper it's worth extra cost for hunting no chance right now, but has potential with ammo makers picking it up and if you dont already on a .30 caliber rifle. Like the 300WM, 300WSM, 300 Norma Mag, and so on.

If You’re a new shooter, whether it’s hunting or ringing steel, 300. PRC is freaking awesome. If you’re an older shooter and you already have a 300WM, there’s not a lot of sense in getting a new rifle and a new cartridge, unless you have money to burn. Just my opinion.
