When I was young, I'm 74 now, and I went where the great bears roam, my side arm was a Ruger SS Blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel in 45 Colt. My hand load was Nosler 300 grain partitions at 1,100-1,200 fps. I figured I had only 2 maybe 3 shots to stop a bear on the move from 25 yards. I saw a fair number of bears, only one got close enough for me to smell his breath and hear him pop his chops. The Ruger was in hand with the hammer back, lucky for both of us , he changed his mind. I would liked to have a .454 Casull! The only thing I ever shot with my Ruger was a Chevy small block, WOW, made scrap out of it. Still own the gun.

Great video and I like that you stuck with the same ammo. I've done some similar testing with .357, but I don't have a 10mm to run it against. I have noticed though, that different revolvers have significantly different cylinder gaps and that this has a lot to do with overall performance, as much as barrel length. My next goal is to run a 10mm side by side against my Coonan 357 with similar ammo to see what I get. Running 125gr .357 through it I was seeing velocities in the 1560 FPS range vs the same round from my Ruger GP-100 4" at about 1500 FPS, but that is here in CO at about 6K ft.

That was a really inconsistent box of ammo, but, it reminds me also, of when I told you, that .357 Magnum, is not more powerful than 10mm. Especially in the heavier for caliber loads. They do over lap each other very well, and sometimes the .357 will out penetrate the 10mm, depending on what’s being compared. Here, already it’s not comparing apples to apples, because the bullet weights are different, and on top of that, crappy, inconsistently loaded .357 rounds. They are really close performers to each other, but it appears Underwood can’t keep people on the job, that have the care or skill, to produce consistent loads. It could be that the powder used doesn’t meter well in their equipment, or they frankly have an employee that just does not care. I’m sure it doesn’t pay well. The components are top notch, the quality of assembly is not. There are too many variables that can make them both beat each other depending on what’s being used, quality, consistency and component wise, and then the actual guns they are fired from.
@boedude84964 жыл бұрын
@@dafawty9thstate830 as you alluded to a cartridge is only as good as it is made. that is also true for power. off the shelf ammo is quite a bit different than handloads, including bb and underwood. the 357 is capable of greater velocities and energies. since different calibers do better or worse with different weights there is no legit way to compare performance by a specific weight. you can only go by light, medium, and heavy for caliber, picking the best for each. or as many subdivisions you want. it mostly comes down to preference, revolver or auto. and some play the round count game. chances are, if you play the odds, the same job will get done with either

@@AlaskanBallistics I mean I get the fear factor and all( though I didn’t grow up around brown bear country I grew up around alligator country) . Having said that you must still rely on proper function whereas revolvers are simple : keep pulling trigger until empty!! Having looked at a lot of numbers and penetration tests, 10mm seems to be just about the best round out there for applications other than concealed carry (I'm not saying it can't be a good CC round, but lots of people have criteria for a CC gun that would rule out lots of 10mm pistols. If you don't plan to CC, those criteria go out the window). I think it has the best balance of mass, velocity and surface area of pretty much all the calibers out there. Carry it in a full size or competition/long slide gun, and you've got yourself a hell of a package.

@williamschramm27614 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. From my research the 10mm is slightly more powerful than the 357 mag. However, the 357 has much more uses for a shooter due to the fact the 357 can fire 38 which has many distinct rounds and the 357 which can fire rounds from 125 grain to 200 grain. Due to this fact , I prefer the 357 due to the simplicity of the revolver. The most powerful 10 mm round is stronger than the 357 round, however, in my opinion, the difference is not significant
@AlaskanBallistics4 жыл бұрын
I think that's a totally valid point, but either is undergunned for big Grizzlies, but good shot placement and they'll work
@williamschramm27614 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct !! From what the info. I have gathered, pepper spray is the best weapon for a charging Grizzly. If the Grizzly is charging you at full speed, the only instant death shot is in the brain. Good luck with that!! I would carry a 12 gauge slug gun or a 45-70. I have Ruger Supper Red Hawk,7.5 barrel, which can fire Bufffalo Bores 44magnun+p+ which is very Close to the 454 Casull but I would not want to use it due to the powerful recoil. I will get the first shot off, maybe the second. Note: I am 210 pound man, weight lifter stands 6 feet 2 inches and the round is very challenging for me to use and handle

Good video ! I've noticed a little difference in advertised velocities and my revolvers and semi autos. I tested certain ammo brands in both my 10mm Glock and 610 Smith and Wesson revolver. The Revolver always had a slightly lower velocity. This is due to the cylinder gap in a revolver. The gases just kind of dwell there and escape while a semi auto forces the gases down the barrel, or allow them to escape in the short rechambering time.
@AlaskanBallistics4 жыл бұрын
Very true. Thanks for watching. Did you notice this big of velocity drop in your. 357 magnums.

No disrespect, but that's bullshit and already been debunked, modern revolvers have the tightest cylinder gap and much stronger forcing cones that don't break as easily as older revolvers, they don't lose that much gas, plus the revolver has a true 6" barrel and the Glock 40 kkm barrel is 6.5" but you only using 5.3 because of the chamber and overall length of the cartridge, also if you don't use at least a 22lb recoil spring you're losing gasses through the breach.

Well presented. Straight to the point. 10mm for me, simply because it has adequate power, more rounds, easier to shoot (for me). Glock 40 is also the choice for consistent trigger pull, reliability, and again, capacity. Thanks man

I have had plenty of automatics. They have all jammed one time or another. I know carry a revolver in Grizzly country just because they have never failed me.

It would be interesting to see what the .40 s&w 200 grain hardcast would do. Sometimes more velocity means less penetration. Love your channel btw.

@Rob Richardson sometimes the faster bullet deforms more through a barrier target and therefore loses mass easier and gains width slowing it down more. Check out my 10mm vs. .40s&w Hardcast video for now info.

Can you shoot underwood hard cast 200gr with glock 40 stock barrel or do you recommend only shooting them with an aftermarket barrel?
@AlaskanBallistics4 жыл бұрын
The coated 200gr you could probably get away with for a few rounds... but for me it's about the tighter chamber support.
