The faster a bullet goes, the less it penetrates because faster means more bullet expansion, which is wider frontal diameter, which slows it down faster, ie, less penetration. Less fps means more penetration because of less expansion, which we saw here. More penetration does NOT mean the 6.5 wins. All of this is also in relation to the caliber. Because frontal diameter in expansion dictates penetration, caliber increase requires more muzzle velocity for the same type of higher grain, higher caliber bullet to expand exactly the same as a smaller caliber bullet of the same type. Look at the difference in those bullets - 243 result is much wider and rounder in shape but the 6.5 retains the cylindrical bullet behind the lesser expansion width both literally and relatively. It expanded far less compared to its original diameter, therefore, penetrated deeper. I'll take sub 2ft of penetration and >2x expansion over 3ft of penetration any day cuz what animal we're hunting with either of these cartridges is 3ft wide in the lungs? Tissue destruction volume/area trumps less than 2x caliber-sized entry and exit holes every time. Also, water jugs and stacked hunting regs are not the same as hair, hide, muscle, bones, and organs. Even the physics of where on the jug you hit and water inside a container could affect the results of the bullets and penetration. This test is neat to see, but does not really correlate to hunting animals. Alas, cheers, and this took quite a bit of effort on your part. 👍🏻
@AlaskanBallisticsКүн бұрын
Thank you, But yes moose and bear can be 3 foot wide at the lungs. Yes it would take a huge one. Godspeed and good hunting my friend.

There are generally three separate 45.70 cartridges. Supposedly the weakest one is the trapdoor loading. It uses 500 grain slug, that's more like artillery. 19th century army squade using trap doors shot att 8 foot square 6 Inc thick oak hatch cover; att over a mile [ that's what I read.] The hits went thru the 8 inches of oak into pile sand behind hatch cover. This is recorded history. Right, blk powder.stil used in duplex artillery today.
