I saw that this was especially a problem at Disney World. My dad is in a wheelchair, and he uses a ventilator. He doesn’t need the space because it’s close, he needs it for the ramp area. But so many of the ramp spots were taken, every single day. A majority of the people have the placards, not a license plate, like we do. Yes, of course there are plenty of people that truly need them, but I saw several families over the course of our vacation who got out of the car and looked fine. I completely understand that disability isn’t always visible, but there were just so many families that didn’t look like they needed a handicap spot. This meant that we had to park in normal spots most days, and it was difficult to find a place where we could park where there was enough space for the ramp. Plus, there were situations when we had to get back to the car quickly if we realized there was an issue with his ventilator, and the normal parking lot was a lot farther. We almost had an emergency one day.

It is unbelievable the number of people I see parking in the handicapped spots and RUN into the store and then a little later come RUNNING back to the car, get in and drive away. I have a lung problem and cannot breathe well. I frequently have to park far out in the lot because the handicapped spots are taken up by people that do not have permits. I was asked three times in a three month period why I had a handicapped permit ! One person yelled at me and said he wanted the space and he was NOT disabled but said it was too hot to walk from the further spaces. You cannot tell by looking at some people if they have a disability. However, when you get out of the car and run into the store, a handicapped parking spot was not for disability it was for being LAZY ! Suspension of their license for one to three months for repeat offenders would most likely stop their using the spaces.

I sympathize with you and am sorry you have to endure this nonsense. These scumbags need to be shamed. Please contact me with scumbag offenders' license plate state & number, + description of the vehicle and driver. I will keep you anonymous, but call them out on my show. Thank you, John E. V.

The fine should be increased to 500 dollars and then have the vehicle towed away. These people who cheat the system are nothing more than self centered "me first" type people.

No slap on the hand. Everyone caught illegally using handicap placards, should have the placards seized, and should be forced to pay a mandatory $250.00 fine.

I have no issue whatsoever with them giving big fines to them. It should be triple what the fine for the hov lane is. The only reason to use a handicap spot IMHO is if there are no spaces left - ANYWHERE in the parking lot.

After I fractured my hip, I discovered the handicap spits were abused in rain and snow.

There's an element of society that views getting the hdcp plates a rite of passage. I was at work one day and could see the parking spots out the window. One guy pulled his Lexus up in the hdcp spots and because it was raining a little, SPRINTED into the bldg so he didn't get wet.

I have a handicap license plate. Every time I go to the mall or other area where there are a few handicap spaces, there seems like there are always cars parked in them with no handicap plate or sticker. Seems like at $250.00 a pop for violators it would pay for a full time cop.

The fines should be tripled and licenses should be revoked

In lots of places, it's a $600.00 (or more) fine, way it should be. I have a legitimate handicap permit (trashed knee from ski wrecks) but the main reason I park in those (wide) handicap spots is to keep from getting door dents in my Corvette. Also, when I go skiing (with a brace on my knee) the permit lets me park right next to the lodge instead of down in the parking lot with the riff raff.

Here in Mass we have a volunteer program (Community Access Monitors) , finding illegally parked cars in HP spots. We give out WARNING tickets placed under windshield wipers. I use a power wheelchair and I don't go looking for violators but when I come across them, I stop and give the warning ticket. CVS here, where I live, the HP spots are regularly violated. In addition, folks have what we call Hidden Disabilities, heart trouble, artificial limbs, asthma, etc etc. and often get harassed by those who see them park in HP spots.

Yeah. I have an invisible disability and I’m always harassed by those who do not need the placard it seems. I even asked one of them who the placard was for and they straight out told me it was their dead mothers. They said they were her daughter so she was entitled to use it. She went into the store eventually and I called the police. She was cited and the placard was confiscated. It was amazing to watch it happen.

What's funny to me is people with these "handicap" placards can't walk more than 15 feet to the front door of Costco but will walk 2 laps around the store with no problem.

It's bad in shopping centers where they will have 2 handicapped spaces in front of a laundry mat..or liquor store..strip malls are the worse...need checking in these places..?

In part, this issue is because most city agencies do not do their job enforcing the laws protecting the disabled, no priority is assigned to correct or enforce the law. Large fines, towing, these actions can make money to pay for enforcement. If tickets were made payable when people get their car sticker, people would have no choice but to pay or no sticker, and another ticket and fine. It can be a real legitimate moneymaker for a city and protect the innocent.

Got told that if you use someone’s placard and they aren’t with you it’s the fine and loss of the placard.

Being a veteran, license plates have the wheelchair symbol on the tag in South Carolina, so no placard is required
@candykelly27056 жыл бұрын
As long as the owner of the placard is parked in a disabled spot, even if they aren't shopping, in my State, they have the right to sit in the car and eat, read a book or even smoke a cigarette if they want to. They don't have to be out shopping. That's one law that needs to be changed, IMO.
