Carl, if I remember correctly, some places have 2 separate offenses relating to wrongfully parking in disabled parking spots. The first is simply parking in the disabled parking spot when you're not disabled. And the second is something like fraudulent use of a disabled parking placard. Last I heard, each offense was for around $900 in San Francisco, so if you get nailed for both offenses, you're looking at about $1800 in fines.

I WORK AS A PARKING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IN DENVER. Yes, I'm one of those that tickets people for not feeding the meters. But I also cite people for misusing those handicap placards. I've heard every sob story and excuse in the book. "I only went into the Walmart for a minute". Ok, it'll only take me a minute to write you up. "But this is my grandmother's car. She didn't remove the placard" Placard or no, you have no right to use a handicap space dummy! "But I had to use the space. I'm in a huge hurry!" Well, you're going to be a few minutes late now. You could have saved time if you used a regular space! "But I didn't see the handicap marking on the pavement because it's covered with snow". There's a vertical sign also there that clearly marks this as a handicap space. Open your eyes! Perhaps the worst excuse I heard was the day after Trump was elected. A 20 something woman started crying, said "I'm sorry. I've been so upset about the election, I didn't have the strength to walk all the way from the regular spaces". My response: "Too bad snowflake". Handicap space violations carry a $420 fine. I don't have sympathy for selfish able bodied people using them. Hopefully this stiff fine will teach you a lesson!
@BoopSnoot6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but on the other hand, about 90% of the people that have valid handicap placards have them for obesity. What excuse do THEY have for not needing more exercise walking a few extra steps? "I'm already healthy" or "Sorry, the hamburger jumped in my mouth"?
@billybobjoe1986 жыл бұрын
I imagine you're obese from your name, job, and avatar. People shouldn't park in handicap spots and they should be jailed for 24 hours for doing so. A simple fine isn't enough. But handicap spots are also out of control in some areas, and nonexistent in others. Why does homedepot need 20 handicap spaces? What happens when their parking lot is full to the brim and not a single handicap space is in use? Why should a handicapped person be given a defacto personal parking space everywhere, despite normal people often not having a single legal place to park? The current handicap system is a problem, and the current mind set of the abled is also a problem. In my experience in Denver, women and negros tend to be the people abusing the handicapped spaces. Two "Victim" classes. The system is imperfect, and I don't have a solution. But pretending that there is never a reason for someone to park in a disabled spot is blind to the realities of the world.
@Timbrock10006 жыл бұрын

It’s not about educating those offenders. They absolutely know what they are doing is wrong and illegal. In order to stop this action from happening should be easy, hire more people to site tickets and charge more for fines. Minimum of $750.00. I asked if I could take photos of the offending people and their vehicles. He said no because there’s nothing he could do unless he saw it for himself. He continued to say it just a misdemeanor. When I (politely) asked him to move the car the acted like I was a cheeky woman with an attitude problem. His response to all of my logical requests. We definitely definitely need more citation officers like that in California. cuz people block or take up the handicap parking space to go into a weed shop or to a store and not come out, so when this happens I park right behind them or they can't get out they have to wait till I get done I know it pisses them off but they have to learn a lesson they're not handicapped it shouldn't be there

My nephew was crossing train tracks and was dragged by a passing train. He lost his left arm and leg and qualifies for a handicap placard. However, her refuses to use it because say's he's not handicapped. Just missing an arm and a leg. Now 31 years old today, he stands (on one leg) at 6ft 1". Lucky to be alive and full of spirit.

these generate so much more revenue than your average parking ticket, police departments should think about how to write more of these.

If there was one cop to each place of business to patrol the handicapped parking violators and issue tickets, they would probably earn the cities a lot of money!
@Noone-rt6pw4 жыл бұрын
So many think only of themselves. Neglecting consideration for those that have handicaps. Very selfish. So many handicapped people are deterred from shopping because of inaccessible parking spaces. Where they give up. Which if anyone subjected to other peoples crap over years would give up. Even SEALS would give up under constant opposition for years, every day on end. Like me, sometimes I can't move because I hurt too bad. I've sat in my vehicle for long times, just because it hurts too much to move. Where I never park in these spots. Then stores get motorized carts for the information, where some let their kids ride in them as entertainment or because they're lowlife and want to act like a child. While others that really could benefit are deprived.

At the Walmart and other places with big parking lots most of the cars in the handicap spaces are parked half in the space and half in the crosshatch, or parked diagonally. I don't think there's any such thing as parking enforcement in South Jersey, except maybe in the cities. I don't know.

Before back surgery a few years ago, my wife had a disabled hang tag. She needed a close space, but not one with room for a wheelchair. Maybe we need two types of handicapped designations. One with a Wheelchair logo and the other with crossed crutches for those who can walk, but not far.

As an MSer with a placard, I rather not park in a handicap spot cause I know there are others who need it more. Plus, the longer I struggle to walk the less I will need the placard.

We have a reason why we even keep disabled spots free when we do late night car meets free during late night car meets in our small town in Germany. There is actually a guy here in a Wheelchair who has a absolutely mad modified Opel vivaro. That thing is just lit. He made everything look cool even the lift and that thing is fast! (for a van) he got basically everything on it from a bigger turbo to a side pipe

If you park on the blue hash marks I might not be able to get my wheelchair into my car, but even if it is hopeless I will try like hell... and just FYI that tends to leave YOUR car (but not mine somehow) very, very scratched up.

Then you're a criminal, you're damaging someone's property. That's a worse crime than a simple parking violation, in my opinion. Also not to mention what would happen if you did it to the wrong guy and he catches you doing it. If it gets violent you'd be absolutely fucked, being in a wheelchair. Sounds like an idiotic idea.
@user-ec2kd8sz3t6 жыл бұрын
@@SaturatedCat So what do you suggest, Garrison? I should just wait around by my car for hours and hours waiting to see if someone will come move their car? I guess that's an option, but not one I would ever take if there was any way I could get in my car (even if it involves damaging the other guys car). You may well see a scratch on your car as the worse of the two evils here... maybe you have a really nice car. But I have important shit to get done. Lives depend on me being at my job (though to be honest only one of the 4 times I've damaged someone's car was I in need of getting to work). I'm not going to wait around for hours and hours to see when someone shows up. Also, not sure where you live, but I live in America. There's no need to physically fight someone in America when it comes to violence... there are tools for that and you'd be surprised how many wheelchair users carry those tools.
@user-ec2kd8sz3t6 жыл бұрын
@@SaturatedCat And now that I think about it for more than 30 seconds, I think you're absolutely wrong. Slightly damaging someone's property is certainly the lesser of the crimes here. If I scratch up your door panel you've actually not really lost the use of anything. Your car isn't as nice any longer and not as valuable, but it still functions as well as it did before and you can drive it wherever you want to go. By parking illegally, you have physically deprived me of the use of my vehicle, which is certainly the greater of the crimes in this scenario (didn't mean to assume you were the illegal parker here, it's the editorial "you").

The three most common excuses: 1). I was in a hurry. 2). There was nowhere else to park. 3). I'm only going to be a minute. None of those entitles you to use that space. You're lucky you don't need it. But you might, one day: 85% of Americans will become disabled at some point, either permanently or temporarily. There are only two situations in which a police officer can cite you on private property, without permission of an owner: handicap parking violators, and parking at a fire lane.

I see this constantly and have recently caught a postal worker parking in the crosshatch area. I admit I never knew what that was for until I myself became disabled. I never parked there and even when transporting my disabled parents I would park in a regular spot after dropping them off. Now i try and inform as many as i can on how important it is not to take a handicapped spot if your not disabled and not to park in the crosshatch

I have a handicap placard for my disability but I rarely use it unless I am just having a particularly bad day. I do have them. I am 55 I have Cronic kidney disease, Heart disease, degenerative disc disease, and leukemia. The first parts of my day is extremely hard because I have a hard time walking because of the amount of pain I am in. As the day goes on I am able to make myself get up and get moving. I feel like if I am using a handicap spot that someone needing it more might come along so I try not to use it.

Where do you apply for this job? I'd do it in my spare time for free. I've been around disabled persons my entire life and I always see cars parked illegally in handicap spots, especially here in Vegas. I can only imagine places like Chicago and New York it's even worse. I know I have had encounters in the past with people I've seen just running in to get smokes or supposedly only going to be there for a couple seconds... and actual disabled people would have to park further away or circle around waiting for these people to get back and leave the spot. Put the fear into them, a few 200-500 dollar fines would most definitely stop most of these parking spot pirates from doing it again. Heck, the same can be said for people that park in two to three parking spaces.

On a similar note , I carry around a tubeless tire valve stem and a Shrader valve remover ( available cheap at many auto parts stores ) Yes, I'm permanently disabled . The easiest thing to do is not even vandalism because nothing gets destroyed like the bicycle tire incident below. You quickly go to one side of the vehicle violating the handicapped spot and you use your tool to remove the Shrader valve that instantly deflates the tire and go to the diagonally opposite tire and deflate it too. Then the fun really begins. FIRST, you lay the removed Shrader valve right next to each tire so no charge of any kind can result in your arrest, Air is free, right? You call 911 and say that my handicapped spot is occupied by a violator and please send out a patrol car immediately. By this time the owner of this vehicle knows he/she/it has to call a tow truck to move the vehicle ASAP. a cop arrives and hiding a grin, writes that $400 ticket. That tow truck driver arrives at that point and can add a special surcharge for " rescuing a vehicle " from the handicapped spot. I'll bet that person never parks in another handicapped spot again...

I've found that a lot of people use someone else's placard. One man who parked in one wearing a tennis outfit threatened me when I asked if he was disabled. I took a picture of his car and his license plate and went to the police station. He didn't get in trouble for threatening me, but he did get fined for parking in a handicapped spot.

I live here in Arizona and me and my husband are disabled we have a plant so can park in the disabled parking spots. Here in our state, the people working in the stores are using the disabled parking spots. We use walking canes to walk around. I wish that cops here would go around to see if they have the right to park in a disabled parking spot.

You may not like this but I see more disabled and "disabled" abusing their own rules/guidelines every single day. In the UK, the councils hand out disabled badges far too easily. Badges should only be given out to people in wheelchairs or have genuine difficulty in walking and perhaps other certain circumstances. At a popular tourist spot in Germany where there is quite a bit of walking involved, there were 80 parking spaces, 4 of which were disabled. All 4 were taken up by British registered cars. I witnessed 3 couples coming back to their cars with no apparent disability, One German couple commented "Always the English". Want any more stories?
