Lived there in 65-66. Don't ever want to feel cold like that. Ex husband was stationed at the Air Force base there. We lived almost at the bottom of a hill in an old converted house and we would go on the enclosed front porch and watch the cars try to get up and down the hill. Quite entertaining. My oldest son was born there and thank goodness there was no snow on the ground at the time.

I live close to Duluth, MN and trust me when I say those roads are steep. Problem is many drivers cannot afford the proper tires on their beater auto plus many cannot drive when the roads are clean of all bad weather here. Why these people attempt to travel down let alone up any road in Duluth during a snowfall is beyond me unless they live on that street as most major roads are always cleared or salted so folks can drive on them. Speed will always a problem no matter what state you live in, people do not realise that they cannot stop until its too late and no one ever taught them how to drive properly in the first place. Trust me as I tow cars for a living and have heard every excuse possible yet they always back down when I state you were driving too fast or you wouldn't be meeting me in this fashion!

To all 'expert' drivers, this is a place where your expert winter driving skills will come to the test. Duluth average hill incline is 60 degrees downhill and has temperatures that will make salt not usuable. There is a lot of black ice on the streets that doesn't go away from salt because of how cold it gets. The cold can actually freeze your oil if your slightly too low. Remember we are actually higher or more northern than Toronto Canada. I have driven a car 200+ mph and have done drifting competitions and too many street races to keep track. In all my years of reckless driving I didnt crash once. But I moved here for a winter and got into a crash going 2mph in parking lot because my car just kept sliding on black ice. There isnt much you can do in 'theses conditions of cold' sure letting the wheels rotate down and tapping the brakes, in the Twin Cities is a reasonable way to gain control over the vehicle. But up here, if your in that same position just dump the car into the curb not much else you can do.

@@anthonynelson9136 From genuine winter and ice driving experience ABS just won't do it. Especially where a quick, fast response is needed, let say, to avoid a collision. And if I recall the video, many of those models do have ABS... Even with ABS pumping would have made a huge difference for several of those drivers. It's unfortunate to believe after all these years that ABS is a function people can rely on and trust with their (and others) life.

Why are these drivers hitting the brakes to lock the wheels?? Are they idiots? As soon you realize you are sliding, you release the brakes and let the wheels rotate again to regain grip and control. thecatsrulz My dad (Duluth-born, 1919) taught me that if I started to gain speed even with the best efforts of pumping brakes and whatever, that it's better to run the car up against the curb or even hit a parking meter and stop that way, instead of sliding into a busy street below. I never hit a parking meter, but one time I did use a curb and the sidewalls of my right-side tires as an added brake, and did manage to stop the car, a '65 Impala. It didn't do my sidewalls much good, though. But if you have no problem even on steeper and slipperier hills than this one in Duluth, well, go for it! Yeeee Haaaw!!

I can't believe all these cars that don't have ABS! I didn't even think they made cars without ABS anymore. You'd be insane to buy a car without it. It not only prevents lockup, but you can actually steer while hitting your brakes as hard as you want instead of just sliding like you're on black ice. I only owned one car in my life without it, and I swore I would never make that mistake again.
@jpwilliams5264

The sad part of abs, once the vehicle speed drops below a certain point (if for some reason all 4 wheels lock up long enough) and these people keep the brakes on the car has no idea it is moving. the right thing to do is brake hard enough that you are just on the threshold of the abs kicking in. As you slow you increase brake pressure all while keeping it near abs engagement.

+Vikram Sahu All of these vehicles are 2WD, so the engine braking would only hold back roughly 60% of the weight. Most of them have an automatic transmission as well. The first gear ratio is much higher in an automatic than first in a manual (therefore it will roll faster). Allowing the wheels to roll while on the brakes is most effective. Or try pumping the brakes. Try either one; it's a long hill.

@snowrocket
@snowrocket 8 жыл бұрын
+ExcessMean My dad taught me the same thing, and it's true if it's an automatic. Because you are not standing on the brakes, the torque converter (fluid coupling between the engine and transmission) keeps trying to roll the wheels forward, even when the engine is idling. Putting the transmission in neutral eliminates that entirely by disconnecting the engine from the transmission.

Doesn't matter what tires you use if you lock your wheels up like they did.

This is why they make studded snow tires people. I have 4 studded snows on seperate wheels that i can put on myself when the winter season is approaching. I have been doing this for about 20 years now. They worked wonderfully in Colorado and now in Wyoming. All season tires do NOTHING on ice! That is like wearing one pair of shoes for every occasion.

Dear Americans. I once used this thing called ABS. It stands for Anti-lock Braking System. Stops a car pretty well. Now that you've mostly got rid of leaf springs on your cars you should aim for the ABS next.

This is awesome. These drivers have never heard of snow tires, or maybe studs in the tires, etc.....when you live in a snowy region, you deal with snow every year. It would be cheaper to buy snow tires than sending your car to the body shop. Anyway, beautiful video.

One would think that people living up north would know that you DO NOT LOCK UP YOUR BRAKES WHEN YOU START SLIDING! You tap your brakes. Locking up your brakes guarantees your vehicle will be out of control.
@carriad11
@carriad11 3 жыл бұрын
Solution! Prior to losing control put the vehicle in low gear, stay close to the curb and do NOT touch the brake. Braking turns the vehicle into a slide and ALL control is lost!

At the speed some of those vehicles are sliding down the hill I don't think tires are the problem but what do I know being able to go up and down mountains in the winter with no problems and no tire chains.

Yes.. and it's not a good advertisement for anti-lock braking systems (ABS), if indeed the cars shown do have ABS. .. Anyway, it's possible to select neutral and imitate ABS by *quickly* pressing and releasing the brake pedal. (on/off, on/off, on/off, etc,) .. 'Neutral' is necessary to avoid the possibility of resistance from the engine locking up the drive wheels.
