I was driving in these conditions one day and a guy behind me was flashing his lights and honking because I was "going too slow". He finallly got frustrated and whipped around me in his 4x4 and IMMEDIATELY lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a guardrail. I have to confess I smiled.
@mindyschocolate
@mindyschocolate Жыл бұрын
I had something similar happen to me too. It was super icy and we were all sliding. Here comes this roundabout so we were going even slower going through it. I had about four car lengths between me and truck in front, who was at same speed as me. Sedan behind me gets pissy and speeds past us and as he came even with the truck, the truck slides and does a 45 into the car. I initially thought they hit, but both kept driving. That truck must have missed him by 1/2 and inch. Did the car learn anything? Nope, not even when he continued speeding and passed a jeep in the ditch. Don’t know if he ever wrecked or not.

Ive had that happen to me before. I was in torrential, and I mean lose traction at 15MPH and no visible lines kind of rain. So I went 15! Dude behind me laying on horns and speeding around me on the 1-laner. I imagine he didn't make it very far in that storm. I was 18 at the time, so it was very scary and new to me.

Actually, I can. I can imagine an autonomous vehicle doing much better than these silly humans, who obviously have no idea how to drive on snow & ice. Maybe not today's autonomous cars. But eventually, we'll get there. Most of these people actually have no business being out I the road, in these conditions, without some kind of traction devices, on their tires. Not 1 of them had any.

David Stevenson Maybe you're just not aware as to how the rubber is different with winter tires David, In extreme cold temperatures, the tread rubber of an all season or summer tire stiffens and becomes less able to provide sufficient traction (it can be equivalent to ice tires trying to drive on ice road) To combat this, tread rubber compounds of winter tires are designed to remain flexible and soft, allowing the tire to grip the road better.

Ice is ice doesnt matter if you have 2, 4, 6 or 100 tires. They're made out of rubber and dont even say "WeLL yEa bUt i HaVe MiChELiNs" that's just a brand name buddy. Tires are tires and when its slick out there you should be driving 20mph under the speed limit
@xone_mi
@xone_mi 4 жыл бұрын
It's pretty easy to drive on ice is you are light on the brakes and the throttle. You also should try to avoid steering as much as possible, and steer slightly and take corners widely. If you spin out, you should go light on the brakes and counter steer as much as possible to get yourself back in a straight line. Not saying you shouldn't be careful on ice.

If these drivers would bring their rpm up then let the rpm fall the tire would start to slow and transfer that power to the ground.

@SceneArtisan
@SceneArtisan 9 жыл бұрын
***** Chains being allowed in most areas, begs a question,.. why do so few motorists use them? Ok, granted, when you set out in your car and it's light flurries, you're not likely to want to spent and hour or so changing all your tyres to get chains on; I suppose it only becomes apparent that chains are needed when it's too late - ie, when you're sliding backwards into a gully, lol. Maybe tyres need chains built into them,.. 1st mode would be normal tyres, 2nd mode would be chains deployed, at the flick of a switch. The pneumatic tyre has a lot to answer for and it's hardly changed since its conception.

Typically you're better off having rolling tires as opposed to stuck/stopped skidding tires. Everybody who drives a lot on snow will tell you the same. You might actually steer around an object instead of hopelessly plowing towards it. Additionally, more rev = less grip. And know y'all in Murica have automatic transmissions, so just flip her in D and ease off the brake.

Sherman Herritt You couldn't be more incorrect. why are all these people sliding around on their year round tires? in those temperatures, they might as well have 4 bricks for tires. so-called "all-season" tires are a huge compromise, trying to do everything, yet excel at nothing. yes, tread shape is important, but also the rubber compound is important. I take it you ride the bus? spend 10 minutes reading tirerack.com it amazes how people buy these $40k, $50k, $60,000 brand new shiny turds for cars, yet won't spend a few hundred bucks on a winter wheel & tire set. AWD, ABS, traction control, stability programmes - none of those can change the laws of physics nor increase the limited traction available.

The moment there can be ice, or even the slightest bit of snow, you should put on winter tires. Not only is the tread optimized for winter conditions, but also the rubber mixture. Summer tires have ALOT harder rubber than winter tires, at 0° or below, they are rock-hard and won't grip as much as the softer winter tires.
@xXYannuschXx
@xXYannuschXx 7 жыл бұрын
***** I was talking about Celsius... And in Germany you are legally required to have winter tires on, when it is possible that there is snow or ice on the road. And there is pretty big reason why and I explained that above...

***** You can even have ice at up 4°C, happened to me at 3°C once. And how does temperature relate to humidity? I only said that because there is valid reason we have that law for 2 decades now and the decreasing accident rate during winter (even light winter with little to now snow) are proving it. And we have seen in this video how summer tires handle in that light snow... From what I know, German roads usually have higher quality surfaces than American's; especially high-speed roads and the Autobahn. There are more than enough studies proving what I said above. You can even find tons of videos on KZbin. Driving with summer tires, when there is even the slightest chance of a ice or snow, is simply reckless.

+spoofer20 see the problem is states that do not get snow have people that want to see the snow so they come way up north where i am and they attempt to drive and stop fast... as where we know it don't work that way and 98% of us northern Mericans have studded tires

Well when the weather is shitty for 6 months out of the year. one does not have a choice but to drive in shitty weather. if you just slow down and take your time you will have little to no issues.

i get why most people don't get Ice/snow tires in areas that rarely get snow But Braking on a turn with snow and ice ? Changing lanes while in a bend in the highway? Rule one Don't speed Don't brake on a bridge or a turn in the road ..let go of the gas way before you come to these
@Bartonovich52
@Bartonovich52 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, just let go of the gas and learn all about lift off oversteer (RWD) under steer (FWD) or braking all four tires loose (AWD/4WD). Nothing wrong with braking in a corner or changing lanes in a corner IF you do it smoothly and within the limits of your tire adhesion.
@freakyflow

+Bartonovich52 Nothing wrong with braking at all But if your in a skid Locking your brakes is a knee jerk motion with most people As for my Blazer its a 4x4 and new mud and snow tires and i been driving in Canadian weather for 20+ years Never have i been stuck or skided into someone (once did a 360 into and passed a red light LOL ) ..trick is know whats up ahead road wise and the car infront of you

@freakyflow

LOLHICRONO Like i said its never been a issue for me And most parts of Canada we have 2 sets of tires summer & winter tires (all season / snow) Most huge crashes you find on youtube is places that are not use to getting snowstorms and dont bother to buy snow tires for a few days of unexpected snow / ice ..there's many many varients Example : Rented cars Never come with snow tires Or brand new dealer cars Or fleets Add the factor of people not knowing to drive in the weather The idea of Still using the highway in a white out or doing 55mph while snow covered ..least it make for great video

freakyflow folks unfamiliar with driving in these conditions shouldn't be attempting to tackle it...with summer tires of all things.

And this is why I use the best studded winter tires I can buy. btw, 4-wheel drive only really helps you to get out of the ditch after you slide in. Having 4 good winter tires makes the biggest difference no matter if its 4 or 2 wheel drive. Well, that and knowing how to drive in those conditions. aka...slamming on the brakes only makes it way worse...this is the number one mistake I see over almost any other mistake. Oh, and giving it more gas and spinning the tires gives you less grip, and polishes the ice for you and other people. If you are stuck, try not to spin your tires.

Black ice will cause you to spin out at 10 mph and is basically invisible to see. I've wiped out many times on it (while walking) and that was going at 2 mph and looking where I was walking.

@NoNameC68
@NoNameC68 5 жыл бұрын
@Michael Heathman "If they are out of control they were driving to fast." Don't be so daft! When it snows, the road does not become uniformly slick. You can have nearly full control over your vehicle going 35 mph, then lose control out of absolutely nowhere because a certain part of the road was more slick than the rest. There's literally no way of knowing what the idea speed is. This is why we often see drivers losing control on the same road! It's not because they're all being reckless drivers. It's because the segment of road before they start to lose control wasn't nearly as slick.
