My review of Stephen Kings awesome time travel adventure, 11/22/63. A different stride for the legendary horror author, but one I believe he lands remarkably well.

This is great! I think that 11/22/63 is perhaps the best King novel. It's profound in its themes, compelling, has a nice literary voice, with a propulsive plot. And the sub-plot with Derry I think is mostly there to show that there's something wrong/off in Dallas. Since he already established Derry as being a fictional town with something ugly simmering beneath the surface, he seems to be using Derry as a kind of foreshadowing to Dallas.

I remember reading Stephen King and especially one of the essays he wrote he said that everybody has a monster inside of them and that we let that out by reading horror. Although he used the disgusting metaphor of having a bunch severed baby heads in our basements.

I disagree with you in some aspects. 11/22/63 is possibly my favorite book that King is written, and I think it is unfair to hold him to the standards of just a horror author. King has written plenty of books that wouldn’t fall under horror, so to say that King not being classically scary detracts from work is not quite true.

Spoiler I was intrigued by the way he handled the Cuban missile crisis. I don't think I realized how freaked out how people must have been at the time. Also as to bring freaked out and scared, I think the books in the Mr. Mercedes series are also not especially horror-ish. Neither is the Green Mile for that matter, though they all have a supernatural element.

I really love a lot of King's stuff, but haven't actually checked this one out, or even heard that much about it. But after this review, I'll definitely be putting it on my TBR. My favorite novel that Stephen King has written is The Green Mile, seeing as it is incredible in terms of tone, character and emotion. A lot of that novel, especially the end hits really, really hard. Recommend picking it up if you haven't already and if you are feeling like reading more of King's works, cause this one is one of his best. Keep up the amazing work, dude!

This was the first King book I read. Obviously I had been into many film and series adaptions of his stories, so I was already on the King train, but this was the first book I decided to read. I love this book, it's my second favorite King book. I was expecting horror and JFK stuff, but was completely sidetracked and entranced by the relationship and story with Sadie. I loved the mundane every day moments and him trying to navigate through the years while he waited for 1963. And with 'IT' being my favorite King story, I was excited to be with Bev and Richie for a little bit even though I had only seen the 1990 miniseries at the time.

2:23 For me, it's always been the interconnection between elements of a story that interests me, so spoilers help me appreciate the story more on the first read, rather than having to wait for the second or third read. This is especially true with stories like WoT where by the time I hit the end of it, I've forgotten so much of the earlier stuff that I may never make those connections *without* spoilers (and I'm including things I already know from previous reads but have forgotten as "spoilers").

My favorite book of all time. There are actually a few "non scary" King books (Green Mile, Mr Mercedes, short stories, etc). I love how he has not pigeon held himself to one genre and because characters come first in all his stories - it works for him.

Awesome! I was looking forward to this review for a while and wasn’t at all disappointed. In fact, some of your points & criticisms felt like they came straight from my head haha. I too have been really surprised with how much I’m enjoying King’s new stuff and impressed with how he’s been able to evolve as an author. I agree that this was one of his best endings to date. Also, Daniel, If you’d like some King recommendations that stray even further from his horror roots (which incidentally also happen to be some of his very best) I’d suggest checking out Different Seasons, The Green Mile, and his more recent Elevation (which I suspect may hold some personal relevance to you given some things you’ve said about your family). I’d actually be super interested to hear your thoughts on some of these and really anything King tbh haha. Love your channel man. Keep up the good work! :) P.S. If you’ve seen the movies The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me, both were adapted from his novellas in Different Seasons which contains arguably his very best writing overall. Lastly, you definitely need to check out his early stuff as well, i.e. Carrie, Salem’s Lot, Misery, Christine, and The Dead Zone. They’ll blow your mind guaranteed.

Daniel, I don't know if you will read this but if you do, you should definitely read the Elric saga by Michael Moorcock. It is a very important saga that influenced many books (GoT and the witcher for example) and it's imo the father of dark fantasy. It's about the prince of ruins Elric the white wolf of Melniboné (sounds familiar does it?) and his struggles with his destiny. The main cycle is composed by 6 books 1.elric of Melniboné 2. Sailors on the seas of fate 3. The weird of the white wolf 4. The vanishing tower 5. The bane of the black sword 6. Stormbringer And there are also two other books that the author wrote many years later: the fortress of the pearl ( between the first and second book) and the revenge of the rose ( between the forth and fifth book). Hope you'll check it out soon !

i haven't read a stephen king book that i haven't enjoyed. Now, I haven't read too many of them (a lot of the ones that have movies after them... after the fact.) I think this was the first book i started getting into BEFORE I saw the hulu . (then tried to watch it as I was going along with the audiobook...which didn't pan out too well, but at least there are enough differences that it worked out well regardless). Can NOT get enough of this book . Yeah, I haven't "physically" read it, but i love listening to audiobooks in the car and this is the top one. I hope we get more of these type of books. trying to change history. The subject itself is fascinating to me... going back in time. Maybe it's overdone a bit, but I thoroughly enjoy it regardless.

I tried to tackle the Stand as my first King novel, but i don’t think I was ready for such a meaty piece of work… (that and I was distracted by a different book that I wanted to read 😂) i wound up reading Fairytale as my first stephen king book, which i liked but I felt there was a lot missing in that book. 11/22/63 for me had none of those feelings of emptiness. I absolutely loved this book. I’m really into mysteries and history so for king to put them together like that was just so great. 11/22/63 is a solid 9/10 for me highly recommend for people who loves thrillers.

I recently picked this up and finished it within a couple weeks. I no doubt wept at the end. 100%. I would like to know more about the green/yellow/whatever card guys. Has anyone had this problem? Is it worth pulling through because every time I decide to never pick something by him up, there comes a random review/post/pigeon carrying a message how great it all is? There are a lot of memorable parts and minor details that give you a sense of nostalgia from other of his books or puts it into his own universe. Yeah, layered. To answer the question about how I live not caring about spoilers, its cause my brain is trash and I'll completely forget about them by the time I actually read enough for them to happen

Daniel, or anyone else here in the comments, can you recommend any books that are similar to 11/22/63? Either by King or other authors? I've read 8 other King books and none of them, in my opinion, have been as great as 11/22/63

As a big SK fan I have not read 11/22/63 yet, but damn I will! And that is the truth!

I would love to see your reaction to reading the eyes of the dragon. I remember it was one of my first fantasy books I ever read.

James Jackson I've never read Eyes of the Dragon, what's your thoughts on it? Ive have read tones of King but it's one of the few I've yet to read.

@@fictionfanatic3469 it's one of my favorites of all times, for king it's on the shorter side at around four hundred pages and has pretty amazing world building and even a connection to the dark tower

You said it's not scary and doesn't have a horror element. It wasn't meant to be a horror story. If you went to school, you know what it's about and what's going to happen. But this is a SCI-FI book! It was meant to be. It's a time-travel book. It won many Sci Fi awards, and rightfully so. But to give any kind of negative review that it's not his usual genre of horror, right, it's not. It's Sci Fi, so should be reviewed that way. Otherwise, terrific review. Far and away, my favorite Steven King book. Simply Outstanding.

What do you think of literary critics that say he|s only an average writer ? What are they on about ? Other critics love him but some are pretty dismissive of him. I love his books, theyre undeniably art.

Unrelated to this review specifically but something I found interesting as someone who is an avid reader who makes no effort to avoid spoilers - www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/spoiler-alert-spoilers-make-you-enjoy-stories-more This study by USC suggested that spoilers actually enhance enjoyment of stories because it helps to understand the overall plot. I watched the entire game of thrones show until I started disliking the most recent season and a friend recommended checking out the books which are behind the show by a couple seasons. When I read ASOIAF with a good understanding of the broad strokes of the plot, I absolutely fell in love and reading has been my favorite pastime since.
