I started walking the day my cast came off. No boot. Using 1 crutch for longer periods of walking. Dislocated and fractured ankle...paired with a fractured fibia. Still some swelling..but daily massages of the scarred area help. No pain, just pinching at times. Was in a cast for 6 weeks and 5 days. I was able to rotated my ankle 360 degrees the same day. Bless the surgeons that ensured my recovery would be bliss.

Wow. I have the EXACT same screws and plate but on my left ankle. I am at week 6 in 3 days. I hope to get cleared to start walking at that time. As a professional martial arts instructor this was a very traumatic experience but my surgeon is very confident that I will not only walk but run, jump and of course kick again. On my way to recovery. Thanks for your video I am inspired 🙂

I am confident you will get back your ankle strength very soon! I highly recommend doing a lot of short but frequent physio exercises. I overdid the exercises a few times and that just set me back for a couple of days each time, so remember to take a break to let your ankle rest as well :)

Thanks. So, it's been 21 months since my surgery. I've been teaching and practicing martial arts, I jump rope, use the jump boxes, I run twice a week (3 miles) and more. Although my ankle feels good it does get a bit sore from time to time after workouts and my overall range of movement is not 100%. But, considering the injury I'm very pleased with my recovery. Thanks again for the video. It brought hope and inspired me to work through the recovery process.

hi , 56 and broke my left ankle. it's been 7 days since surgery. I'm able to remove cast daily and change dressing. actually no longer need bandages and I slept for the first night without the cast. I'm not wearing the cast now, just getting around on the kneerover, coffee, light laundry, took my first shower at a loves truckstop, felt great, think ill book a handicap room for showers. I'm driving because I need too. haven't seen My x-rays but major hardware and an outer scar 8" and in inner 4"". my brake I think from watching as I'm tumbling down an embankment the brake is 3 " above the ankle, but because the Achilles is so tight when you brake it , it dislocates the ankle. I've got decent range of motion without pain anywhere in the ankle. I'll see the surgeon in about 10 days. I have a zero weight for 6 to 8 weeks. that'll be tough. so your my Rockstar, I'll see I you have more videos. I was given a prescription for pain meds but don't need it, not even Tylenol, weird? I heard the brake but not real pain at the time, weird again? sorry , just sitting here.

Well, I guess when you're young you really do bounce back. I have the same injury but also had ankle dislocation and 11 weeks post surgery I have a lot of swelling and it hurts constantly. I am just beginning to walk without crutches but I lean to my left side so my posture isn't good. I am getting physio to help with this too. I used to be very sporty in my 20s & 30s but slowed way down into my 50s just doing cycling or walking. It really makes a difference in helping your recovery. Hi! It's best to consult with your doctor to see if you are ready to walk without support right after the cast is removed. In my case, yes - I did a few steps bareoot in the patient room without any support after my cast was removed. It was unstable and slightly painful, but my doctor said it was normal on the first day. My physio provided a lot of exercises for me to build up my muscle before I regained my strength and walk smoothly. I hope it helps and wish you have a full recovery soon!

I had surgery on March 16 2022. I got the cast removed of April 7 due to an allergic reaction and the incision was not healing well. They gave me a surgical boot but restricted on bearing weight to the bad ankle. How long did you feel that stinging nerve pain for? This is really rough.
@kekiky
@kekiky 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Giovani, I am sorry to hear that and I hope you are feeling better now. I am not 100% sure when my nerve pain went away as I was on some strong pain killers targeting nerve pain for 2-3 weeks after the surgery. When I stopped taking the pain killers for the nerve pain, I was just feeling the 'normal pain' and not the 'nerve pain'. I totally agree nerve pain was awful as I was sweating with tears in the hospital for 7+ hours before they gave me the stronger pain killers. I wish you have a smooth recovery!

The main reason I recorded the video was to help the others who are in the similar situation 😊 I still have all my plates and screws in, and I don’t think they will be taken out unless there are any complications (touchwood). The main limitation I experienced was my ankle got quite sore after walking for a longer period of time, e.g. 60-90min. I also couldn’t do single leg jumps very well, as it’s still more unstable than the other ankle. I think both could be overcome if I do more training and strengthening exercises. I also recommend massaging the ankle with cream everyday, as it will help breaking down the scar tissue. I learnt about it from my physiotherapists and it definitely made a difference over time. it may feel like a long journey but it’s going to get better everyday! Remember to celebrate the small steps along the way 🥰

@@kekiky Thanks again for I understanding my anxiety. My x.ray seemed even worse than your. I have 3 longs crews fixing my medial malleolous and a syndemosis tight rope. That is crazy how your ankle still sore after 1+ hours walking after 2 years. Since there are still lot of stiffness, I have a drop foot right now. My physio said because I have lost of muscle and limited ROM which results in foot drop. I guess I just have to pray and be patient. I live travel and hoping this ankle won't hold me back. Hi Manoj, I only started running a year and a bit after my surgery. I started by doing yoga and doing short walks every day to train my muscle and improve flexibility. I did my first jog when I was running late to an appointment and surprised by the strength of my ankle that had improved over time. I haven't been very active this year, but my ankle is feeling well most of the time and I plan to go back to rock climbing next year to build up more strength. My advice is start training with short and easy exercises. It may seem trivial but it definitely helps! I hope you can start running again soon 😊

@@lisabeverley2522 The swelling didn't go away until at least 2-3 months after weight-bearing. I remember I needed to raise my ankle in the office regularly as it would get swollen after sitting down for an hour or two. I will recommend tryiing to walk in sneakers instead of barefoot to start with, as sneakers provide slightly better support. I also remember the sole/heel of my foot hurt when I first started walking as I hadn't put any weigh on it since the surgery and it lost a lot of muscles. From memory, I could walk fairly well in sneakers in 2 weeks after weight-bearing. However I would only walk for a very short period of time at the beginning. Hope it helps! I still cannot go dowstairs like before but upstairs without any issue Thanks in advance for your response 😊

Hi DEAD_GAR! My occasional pain still hasn't gone away completely, but it only happens once or twice a week (at most). I had troubles going downstairs too and my physio taught me a good trick and it worked out pretty well for me in my first few months. Basically when you go downstairs, slide the sole of your foot over the lip of the step instead of walking down normally, so it doesn't put strain on the ankle (hope it makes sense). I would say I am walking 99% normal now! It is still a bit tricky to jog and jump. The skin around one of my scars started developing eczema a few months ago, but the doctor said it is very common after trauma, so I need to put on some ointment everyday. I hope you will get better soon! Feel free to ask me anything anytime :)

@@kekiky thanks a lot for the detailed information about your recovery! I am working from home and, when I'm on my desk, I try to do the flexion that we require in order to walk normally downstairs and pain is going away so fast. Unconsciously my body feels ready to walk downstairs but since there is still some stiffness I've avoided to do it. Today it is my 9th week and I can walk almost normally. It is really rewarding that after that kind of fracture body can heal up that fast! :)

Hi BISS, I started walking without a limp on day 10-11 after I started weight-bearing. However, I would get tired after a very short walk (~5min) and would need to take a break before continuing. If I had a longer walk, it would be sore and I would need to ice it. I think what you are going through is similiar to my experience. Remember don't overdo it and take frequent breaks so your ankle has time to recover after each exercise :)

Hi Winks. Had a similar procedure and was wondering about a couple things. You mention going downstairs as an issue repeatedly in these videos. When did that really start to clear up for you in your recovery process? Also I'm well aware this isn't to replace the input of my doctor but I was curious. So basically you went through 6 weeks no weight baring and then once cleared started testing the ankle from the look of things. Remarkable progress over 11 days to say the least. Were you doing therapy during all that? Thanks. Steve.
@kekiky
@kekiky 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I can walk downstairs with confidence and slight discomfort (feeling the tension in my ankle), but I prefer using a handrail if I need to run down. Running downstairs is like doing a series of single leg jumps - it hurts my ankle and I worry that I would fall. I think it can be overcome if I do more strengthening exercises but I don't think I have done enough. From memory, I started walking downstairs without support about 3-4 weeks after the cast was removed. Yes I went to a lot of physio sessions during my recovery. I had weekly physio sessions in the first two weeks of weight bearing, then I had fornightly physio sessions for at least another 3 months. The physio sessions definitely helped a lot. As I lost a lot of muscles during the 6 weeks of non-weight bearing, I think it's more important to practise the strengthening and flexibility exercises before spending too much time practising walking. One thing to note is when I started walking, my body tried to compensate in a funny way which led to more pains on my left shoulder. I went to a seperate fornightly physio sessions to fix my left shoulder (as they only work on one body part at a time) and that series of physio sessions lasted longer than the sessions for my ankle. I am not sure if the shoulder pain was avoidable if I didn't push myself as much, but I was too keen to get rid of my crutches and moonboot and didn't want to wait for any longer. I hope it helps! I wish you have a speedy recovery and feel free to let me know if there are any other questions 😊

Hey there. Today was the first day I walked in sneakers and I think I overdid it and have swelling around the ankle. Did you experience this and, if so, for how long did you continue to have swelling when beginning to wear shoes? Thanks! 🙂 Oh, and by the way, I went straight from one day of moon boot to sneakers because the doctor said it was OK, so maybe I was too fast. I started the morning walking the way you were on Day 10 & 11, yikes. But I have been getting physio for 2+ weeks for ROM and strengthening.

Hi H, congratulations on walking again! Yes I definitely had swelling when I overdid it. In the first few weeks, I will take a faily long break after I walked for 5-10 minutes. When it started swelling, I tried to ice it as much as possible. I didn't transit from moon boot to sneaker 100% right away. In the first week or so, I walked with sneaker at home and have my moonboot when I was out. I slowly spent more and more time in my sneakers and I think I transited 100% after 2 weeks. I hope it helps! Good luck on the recovery journey and I am excited for you!
