"24 Hour Party People" is not a mockumentary. It's more of a dramatized documentary. The people and bands and places were real. It even has appearances by some of the ACTUAL musicians from the music scene depicted in the movie. Anyway, surprised you included it on this list and happy to see it promoted. Great movie.
@MetaTaco3172 ай бұрын
I came here to say same thing. Documents real people & bands (Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays) who all came out of the Hacienda Club in early 1980's Manchester England. Filmed in a very unique way. Love this movie. Tony Wilson has a great line about how Rave Culture started there - "the beautification of the beat". Great soundtrack too. Worth watching just to see how Factory Records and it's oddball agreement with its bands lead to New Order financing the club, label and other bands.
@Plutarch66782 ай бұрын
It’s not a mockumentary, it’s not about “party culture” but Manchester music, and Coogan wasn’t playing a “buffoon reporter” but rather a Cambridge-educated music maverick whose signed some of most influential bands of all-time. Did dude even watch this movie?
@lancecox80842 ай бұрын
Yes! and the Manchester Punk scene starting in 1976 that resulted in the formation of Factory records, a major part of the plot, plus it is a true story done in a satirical fashion by the great director, Michael Winterbottom.

Tony Wilson the tv presenter played by actor Steve Coogan in ‘24hr party people’ was definitely not “a buffoon”. He started Factory Records opened and managed the The Hacienda Club, he also had a very long career as a tv presenter who championed alternative and regional culture and was responsible for booking The Sex Pistols for their first tv appearance on a show he hosted. Sometimes referred to as Mr Manchester.

…And the movie is not a “mockumentary” as the music, the bands, the people, and stories are pretty much true. Sure, some of it is “legend”, rather than absolute fact, but it’s certainly not “This is Spinal Tap”. This movie uses comedy as a vehicle to get its story across, but it’s not making fun of rock documentaries or music. For anyone who doesn’t know this story or these artists, I highly recommend going back and listening to Joy Division, New Order, and the Happy Mondays.

Nick Cave wrote the beautiful script for The Proposition and cowrote the soundtrack. It is as close to the mood of Blood Meridian as any Western I have seen. I mention this because Hillcoat has been tapped to direct the theatrical version of that amazing novel which, so far, no one has managed to turn into a completed film. Based on The Proposition, I have hopes that Hillcoat may pull it off. He did a decent job on The Road (another Cormac McCarthy novel). I loved all the movies you mentioned-some of my favorites! Thanks

Awesome to see you mention 24hr Party People, just a heads up it's not really a mockumentary it's actually loose based on the real life of Tony Wilson a pioneer television presenter who promoted bands around the Manchester area, the 'Factory Recors' label which managed acts such as Happy Mondays, A Certain Ratio, New Order (the former Joy Division) etc. and eventually (with the help of the along with members of Joy Division/New Order) set up the legendary Hacienda night club which was really the mecca for the dance/rave culture in the UK in the late 80s/early 90s. So yeah just a bit of context that all the story with the music/bands was real it was just an embelshiment of the story/character in certain parts with majority still being reasonably factually correct.

The Proposition soundtrack from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis is as good as it gets... and with Cave having written the screenplay, it just goes to show what a powerful trio those three make when it comes to Westerns. Hillcoat would go on to direct Triple 9 (Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson), as well as the Prohibition-era movie Lawless (Tom Hardy, 2012) and then he even did some work with the best video game franchise in the history of the universe - Red Dead Redemption. Hillcoat, Cave, and Ellis would reunite for the post-apocalyptic Western, The Road (Viggo Mortensen, 2009). Cave and Ellis would go on to compose one of the greatest soundtracks to one of the greatest movies ever created... The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Cave popping in with the cameo at the end). When it comes to the history of Westerns, these three have not only left their mark thus far, but they've helped to shape the direction and quality that lies ahead.

You weren't wrong in your description, but anyone familiar with the things I just mentioned will understand the movie a whole lot better if they understand what it's actually about before they see it. The 2nd place finish would be No Country for Old Men. Only receiving a 2nd place finish because the Coen brothers break the mold and it's not by formula a western. I know some people think it's a neo western but I don't think that fits either. But I digress. It still is a western to me and it gets 2nd place. The proposition can have 3rd place if you fancy it.
