Yep use grease to hold them in place. Put one on top horizontally and then roll it over to the bottom by turning the valve, the grease will hold it in place, then put one on top. Release the valve spring and vu-walla you have one of them done. Nice job RK. Keith

A valve spring compresser can be useful however a bench vise and 3 small wire ties can replace that tool. It basically can give you more room to work when installing the retaining clips

I grew up in a small engine repair shop. We used to put the valve keepers in holding them with a dob of grease on the end of a screw driver. Works great ! And is easy with a little practice ; )

One method i found that sort of works, but you need practice with it (like with everything, amairite?) is to stick two broken shards of a neodymium magnet on the keepers (one per each). That helps keeping them grounded. Once you're done, you take them out and you're set.

Your right I just did my valves using this guide on the head bolts but got confused when only 8 are numbered. I have the exact same engine with a 9 bolt pattern tomorrow I will loosen and re tighten using the manual diagram. I got the exhaust valve keepers in using wire ties on the springs it worked out really nice using grease to hold them it took only one try! I thought that was going to be the hardest part but nope. Nice video series it was my first venture into valves I'm 66 yrs young.

Oh yeah, that valve spring tool is the ticket. I used two zip-ties on a little 3.5 HP, and even with the easier "offset washer" as a keeper, it was a booger bear. When I finally got it on, it wasn't due to skill as much as luck. :>)

Bubba, as far as the valve keepers, the best way is what ever works the best for you. I usually just use a tiny magnet and just loosen the spring compressor just enough to hold the keepers and install the inside first with the parting edge up & down then the outside keeper. I sometimes magnify the keepers as well. A little grease helps. also fully adjust the spring compressor to fit as well as possible. You're doing just fine, and at talking it in as well....lolol....Bob.

Guess I got lucky ages ago. I pulled the head off a 3.75 Briggs. Cleaned the carbon off the head and the top of the piston. Threw it back on with the same gasket and just tightened the bolts. Never had a problem. It didn't help the lack of power though. Maybe it headed a valve job.

I still don't like the way that intake valve spring retainer just sits there. I'm wondering if that small hammered piece of metal you found in the disassembly was a valve keeper that had come loose. Nope! Did some more checking and it seems B&S used those type of valve locks on a bunch of their engines. Ya learn something new everyday.

haha... funny you mention the in/lb conversion. When I was like 13 I was overhauling a 16HP Kohler and stripped out the bolts in a brand new rod because I forgot about that little consideration and torqued it to like 90ft/lb instead in in/lb.... and it was an expensive rod too.

You almost had it with the grease. Put the keepers in all the way into the cap then push the valve into the cap and with a screwdriver push on the keepers. They will open up onto the valve stem then just pull on the valve to keep them there.

When installing valve springs that use tapered locks (like on the exhaust valve) the spring and the spring retainer (disc on bottom of spring) are compressed as a unit. The locks inserted and the compressor expanded.

Guys like me that do this for a living don't have a good method for those pesky valve retainers either. I use a magnet on a stick to get them in there and then I put a finger on the retainer and pull the magnet off. Practice helps, but there is no easy way that I know of. And the old man who I used to work for had done thousands of valves- he didn't know a trick either.
