This world is a funny thing, I was looking for a cheap used lawnmower tractor for our summer house, and I found one of these that was custumized and used as a mini tractor and now I am here.

Great stuff! I've never (knowingly) owned a Briggs but after finding your channel and watching all the videos I reckon I could strip down and re-assemble one of the small ones blindfold! And now on to the 11hp!

Those good old 11hp Briggs are nice motors. I have worked on a bunch of them back in the day.... They real take a beating and keep on running.... We had the same motor in a John Deere 111, and the Crapsman...... A buddy has a newer 14.5 Hp OHV Briggs which I swear is the same block etc just with OHV attached...
@douro207 жыл бұрын
Probably. One I know for sure was an OHV built on an L-head block was the old Tecumseh XL engine from the 1970s. Last time I saw one was on a Miller welder. It had a separate valve chest which sat on top of the head. It was actually one of Tecumseh's better engines.
@rw3dog7 жыл бұрын
I had a 1980's Agway (MTD) with a 12hp Tecumseh CL OHV. It ran good if you could actually get it started lol.....

I didn't hear one "Aye, Aye, Aye"..seems to me a busted mower needed at least one of those!Old/Low Oil levels and high temps can be a bad combo for an air cooled engine. Better call Mike!..oh you already did!Look forward to hearing it go again..give that baby some RoadKing love too and it will give you another 30 years!

roger oconnor .......I have two of these same grey box style mowers. One is just a parts machine now, and the other just a running tractor with no deck. These were made by MTD and only had hood changes. Craftsman were grey then green, the others were red for other brands.

I wanna give ya a big ol' thumbs up just for posting this one. That sounds like it's shot a valve seat to me. If you figure out which is hot and which is common on the starter, you can jump out the starter with a screwdriver to spin the engine over to check for a head leak. At any rate, I"m excited to see the next installment. Oh and uh... Give the poor thing some TLC eh? Lol. Nuff o'dis.

I have the same engne mounted in my lawn tractor , it needs a new ignition coil ( ignition vanishes when the engine is hot ) , and a new belt for the mowing deck . I bought this tracor from a buddy for a small price.
@suptjud7 жыл бұрын
I had a mower exactly like that one for twenty years. The exhaust valve seat came loose and I peened it and it ran for many years after that fix.The transmission destroyed itself so I sold it and bought a new Craftsman mower with a 46 inch cut. That one is 18 years old and still running strong with a valve adjustment the only thing done to the engine. Regular oil changes are essential for long life.

You can buy a new magneto for les than $20 on eBay. I just replaced one on a 30 yo Briggs 5 hp, and it made all the difference in the world. It starts and runs like new.
@oscarzt16527 жыл бұрын
1:12 our westwood T1600 failed to start like that because the ignition coil had delaminated so when it was hot the hysteresis losses meant it couldnt spark

I believe that the owner's instructions call for just dropping the dip stick in the tube without screwing it down. Otherwise, you get a reading which shows more oil than you actually have in the crankcase.

Interesting. Might have done a compression check?
@deltafactory7 жыл бұрын
When you tried to start it in the beginning of the video, did it look like it spun too freely? I'm wondering if you could use that to diagnose low compression, confirming the valve theory. Also, is it worth using one of those compression testers that screw into the spark plug to get a before & after reading?
@allenmckinney95337 жыл бұрын
i was working on a B&S 190cc engine off a pressure washer that wouldn't fire off gas. the gas had a clean path through the carb but turned out there was a vacuum leak after the carb. once i sealed it up the engine fired right up.
@oscarzt16527 жыл бұрын
try changing the igniton coil and spark plug. If that dont work try changing the cutting belt or see if the blades are fouling underneath

that's a good old engine ,, it's a 252707 from the look of it , they were around a long time ,, 10-21-85 it's 32 years old I had this exact same mower when i first started mowing lawns with a rider as soon as i heard it cranking i knew you had a sticking valve or some carbon on it ,,I've lapped the valves on a lot of these over the years the 252xxx series was replaced by the 282xxx in the late 80s and early 90s ,they built the 2 series at the same time for several years ,and a lot of people mix the 2 up ,, the 282xxx is actually physically bigger than the 252xxx ,,,a good way to identify an older 282xxx is by looking at the rear of the block there is a bolt in the middle of it that the 252xxx doesn't have surprisingly some of the parts are the same like the starter ,, all of the single cylinder starters from the 7hp 170xxx engine to the bigger 282xxx and 31Bxxx OHV engines is the same , the ignition coil is also the same on all the single cylinder engines , just the length of the wire is different on a different note ,, you MUST screw the dipstick in fully for the oil reading to be correct a little bit of a cheat that i have learned over the years through careful measuring if you set the stick in there and pull it back out if the engine is full of oil it will be at the ADD mark or a tiny bit above and you mentioned a couple quarts ,, it holds 42 ounces to be exact
@richdelgzz5 жыл бұрын
Any idea what the factory spark plug should be for the 252? mine reads 252707-145-01. The briggs website doesnt recognize that model number. May be too old.

Did this come on over time or just overnight? sounds like a burnt exhaust valve, sticking valve or released/loose valve seat by the symptoms.

@ron8277 жыл бұрын
Did you check for spark? Give it a squirt of fuel through the carb intake. I experienced a similar problem and it turned out to be a loose valve seat.
@MattHooker7 жыл бұрын
one youtuber (forget which one) used a strategy of sprinkling talcum powder around the outside of the head gasket to check for leaks. a leak would cause a big cloud of powder. now if it was an OHV Briggs, then the real challenge would be to make the head gasket last long enough to need to do a valve adjustment first
@JPanyon7 жыл бұрын

Some of those craftsmen mowers were pretty good machines if you could keep the deck and spindles from going south. I was just saying on another channel we don't see much in the way of vertical shaft engine work, so I'm looking forward to this fix. Thanks, Roadking.
@805ROADKING7 жыл бұрын

@GGXjimmy7 жыл бұрын
Could well be a valve seat or spring thats gone. But you said you had compression?! Check the solenoid relay first. it could be sticky. Good luck!
@billyloveland5677 жыл бұрын
OH BOY BUDDY! when checking the oil go counter clock wise and the dipstick will fall down into a notch then you pull it out and read it! :) and check the connections on the solonoid! sometimes can get a little rust on them causing that clicking...if that dont work i got a craftsmen that looks just like that if you want it ;)

Man, 32 years old, that engine/mower doesn't owe you much, does it ? It does deserve a valve job now , I'm thinking., While on the subject of thinking,...would you consider installing an in-line shut off valve for the fuel line, now while you're at the engine?
