1. Unlock your phone 2. Download local map for offline access 3. Bring several bank cards, curve is good (discount code: BANAN) + local currency before arrival 4. Buy travel insurance, world nomad is good for bagpackers 5. Check travel vaccinations Flights 6. Drink up before flight 7. Liquids below 100ml 8. Weigh your bag before leaving for airport 9. Check in online before getting to airport (in case of overbooked flights) 10. Travel with an open mind, be respectful

No need to buy a special weighing scale for your baggage. You step on the scale in your bathroom, then do it again and carry your bag, the weight difference will show whether you are within the weight limits of your airline.
@BackpackingBananas5 жыл бұрын
Haha that is indeed another way of doing it (if you have a bathroom scale 😉)
@susie22515 жыл бұрын
Works from home I guess (if you can actually hold your case and have a scale). But what about the return trip home or other additional flights when you’ve probably bought things along the way and don’t have access to your home scale?

related to the "100ml only" - travel with a bunch of large ziplock bags. In addition to being generally handy for keeping wet stuff separate, if you _do_ forget that your favourite water bottle is full and security won't let you tip it out... just empty it into a ziplock bag, seal it up and hand over the squishy bag of fluid. It's cheeky, but it beats chugging the bottle, or leaving the queue.

We're currently travelling Central and South America and documenting this on our channel and have the following tips as well: 1. Research a place before you go. It may sound obvious but some people just arrive in a city and plan to just wing it there. This can be great sometimes (we admit to doing it) but it may mean you miss out on some great activities or places there and if you don't research areas or transport, could cost you more with accommodation and getting around. 2. Carry on luggage. When we told people we were travelling 9 months with just carry on they thought we were crazy! However, you really don't need THAT much stuff and when you're walking up a hill or running for a bus you will be thankful for a lighter load. Also, you don't have to pay any luggage fees if you're planning on flying during your travels so saving some extra cashhh :) 3. Shampoo bars. They are smaller so take up less room than bottles, last for sooo long and also don't have any plastic packaging so better for the environment - woo! 4. Let your bank know you're travelling. In addition to all the advice on cards, just give your bank a quick call or message on social media to let them know what area you are travelling and for how long. Some banks you can even do this through their app. It just saves the risk of your card being blocked and the hassle of spending time you could be travelling and enjoying yourself, trying to sort it out.

Great tips!

On #4, recently all my banks have stopped the practice of taking down your foreign travel plans now. They tell you on their site to not bother calling in. As I understand it, it’s something to do with advanced fraud detection techniques of analyzing your prior purchases like plane tickets or something that they already can tell if it’s validly you or not. I’m pretty sure it’s nefarious big brother stuff, but it is what it is I guess.

Great video, with really relevant stuff! A few extra tips: When leaving your country, remember to turn of data on you phone (no big surprise-bills) and instead go on Settings -> Phone -> wifi call connected. That way you can use your phone for calls (when you have wifi). When going on long trips I tell my bank before leaving, that I won't be having any income for half a year, and that it is fine that my visa is begin used in eg. Indonesia, so my risks of a blocked card fells a little less. When going to third world countries or countries at risk of eg. earthquakes for a longer time I register to an official government list (in Denmarks it is called danskerlister / Danes list), so if something should occur in this area, the government will know that you are there, and try to get you home. I don't know if something similar exists in other contries though?
@Busha695 жыл бұрын
the signing up for the government list does exist in other countries...it does in my country at least (Slovakia). I'm in Japan for a year and so I signed up. They do send warnings too if something big is expected to happen (like the typhoon Hagibis).

If you’re on a long term multi-country trip it’s a good idea to keep about $100-150USD emergency cash stash, one of the strongest currencies so you can always exchange it anywhere. The more often you exchange money the more you lose to conversion and fees. So better to just exchange it when you really need it, rather than going to money changers every time you switch countries. Also research which countries need you to exchange money before you leave the country, assuming you have cash left over. I got caught with this. Couldn’t exchange my Nepalese rupees in denominations below 1000 outside of the country. Lost about $30. I’ve heard Laos is another one where this happens.

I’ve never used a SIM card internationally. In America we have T-Mobile and they have unlimited international data roaming. I used to have Verizon and would go to Canada all the time and my data overages were stupid high. And that’s why I switched to T Mobile. Not sure if UK has a phone plan that’ll incorporate travel addiction into the plan.
@BackpackingBananas5 жыл бұрын
Haha a 'travel addition' plan, if only 😅. We have the network Three which is best for international travel and cover you in a fair few spots over Europe and also in Australia but sadly not the whole world (and most places I find myself travelling)

It depends on if you bought your phone as part of a network contract or independently. Best thing to do is take your phone to your nearest phone shop and they'll tell you what to do x
@susie22515 жыл бұрын
Some countries have laws against carriers locking their phones (ie, so that they only work on the network you have a contract with), so it’s a foreign concept to a lot of people. But if your phone is locked in a country that allows it, it can usually only be unlocked if it is fully paid off and/or wasn’t bought on discount through a carrier contract. It’s because you essentially bought the phone on a payment plan from the carrier in return for agreeing to exclusively using their services for a set period.
