What I've learned from covid is to put your home office in whatever room gets the most sunlight throughout the day. At the beginning of covid I was working in the basement because I thought I had no where else but now my desk is in my living room and I realized how much natural light helps with motivation and mental health

Such a key point. My desk is in the middle of my living area, as that's where the natural light is, even though aesthetically it's not ideal. It's so nice to be able to look out the window when you're working. Dreading returning to light-less, cubicle work desks later this year.

I don't have a TV. Works fine for me. I can see everything on my iPad. I don't have the center of my life as a TV. And sometimes when you go visit someone that does have the TV as the focal point, you come in the door and they don't even turn the TV off so that you can visit, and laugh and be together. They think you want the TV on also. So you just make a mental note to stay a little while. And then you excuse yourself. It's amazing what you can learn and do and read without a television staring at you.

@@gailremp8389 I have a Samsung Galaxy Note that I spend lot of time on. But t.v. is more for entertaining-especially multiple people. In our house before COVID, we hosted alot of family and friends during holidays and sporting events. Myself, hubby and son also do movie nights. So the t.v. is definitely a focal point in our living room and basement. It really just depends on the famiy in that particular household functions.

As a parent I can't do the home office in the main areas like my living or dining room. I tried it and had to drag my desk into my bed room so I could get anything done . Even then my kids follow me room to room🤦‍♀️. I need a dedicated crafting /office space for my mental health and productivity.

For SURE. 3 kids remote learning and my husband works overnights on top of it. I have a dedicated corner in the bedroom to work from like 8-11, then I have to move to the closet from 11-1, then the living room until 3, and my son's bedroom from 3-5. The constant rotation from room to room makes me so unproductive, stressed, and flustered. Also, our great room is already a dining room, living room, kindergarten classroom, gaming center, and hobby center. There is not an inch of spare space, even if I wanted to move my office into the hub of our home. Let me long for my own space. Please. There is no shame in wanting to keep a room dedicated to the preservation of sanity.

I love my grandma's style because she is so good about making things look fresh for a long time. Instead of doing open shelving in her kitchen, she did one or two cabinets with glass doors. I believe one of them is just cups because you don't tend to pull a lot out of those cabinets so it's easy to keep it cute. And the other is more of a display cabinet with a fun plate or something seasonal; Definitely something to consider if you're itching for that open look but with less upkeep. You can get glass that's a little frosted or funky so it's just the silhouette of the items inside and you don't have to be too particular about it. You can always change what's on display in it so freshen things up without having to do anything major.

Kiva, add “Books as Props” 1) Defacing them 2) Encasing them in white contact paper or burlap for ‘visual consistency’ 3) Turning book back binding to the back 4) Stacking [coffee table book] I READ my books, I derive joy reflecting on its contents whether they’re all text or more picture-based; they’re not only objects to ‘look nice’ It’s like when non-musicians have a baby grand piano with candles, crochet fabric, and pictures atop as ‘design element’. It’s not about the curvy lines- it’s an instrument to be USED, to be respected for the sounds it can emit, and to be played for one’s self and for others

My trend is toward minimalism. Too much "stuff" is chaotic and confusing. Disperse interesting artifacts and art as warranted in the space. Live in your home, it is not a museum. Always make your guests feel comfortable. In your budget allow for sofa cleaning occasionally. For me perfection is not an aspiration (it can only be interpreted as such by me) If my decor does not cause me stress, my guests can handle it for a short time or maybe they will choose not to visit again. .

She retired at a "young age" (mid 40s) and bought an ACTUAL farmhouse! Not a lick of that decor once she moved! WHY? She achieved her DREAM! She had the deco to remind her what she was working towards! You NEVER know so don't judge! My master bath is entirely beach themed! It's my sanctuary and the beach is my happy place. The problem with bringing the office into a family space is this: I am on a Zoom webinar several times per month. It is a webinar to help people improve their skills in a specific area. There are 100 to 300 people on the webinar. Two people in particular have children who monopolize the parents time and are constantly interrupting/playing and the parent refuses to discipline the child or get the child out of the space. Of course, this is a discipline issue and the parent isn't doing their job. I agree with you to some extent. But not if family is in the area and you can't get any work done - in that case the office needs to have its own space.

I really do enjoy just staring at my furniture, it makes me happy to see how I have put things together, but it also is the number one spot for doggo tug of war and I’m happy it is. I think jokes don’t always come across via videos because it’s just me sitting in my living room talking to myself 😂. I love crafting a beautiful background for you all and that impacts how I use my home. Since my channel focuses on Interior Design, the way my home looks is very important to me. Just consider how silly I’d seem giving design advice with a messy background, lol! I’m still human. I have mess, I sit around in sweats on my sofa, and I have more paint on my furniture than any person should, haha. Anyway, I so appreciate those of you who are defending me and I equally appreciate those of you who challenge me. I love that we are able to engage in thought provoking conversations. We have a pretty square room so we positioned the tv on the opposite wall right by the door when you enter the living room and on the wall behind the couch we installed a paneling feature wall and placed sideboards from wall to wall. Now the focal point is that wall. We also painted it a beautiful sage and bought a chandelier in brass. The first thing you see is the wall and the tv is rather hidden and will only be seen when you sit down on the couch. Maybe rethink positioning your tv.

What I remember about it is has me convinced that what we're calling mid-century modern now has nowhere near the diversity that existed then, so we're only seeing the "danish modern" style category of the furniture people used at that time--or the very expensive and exclusive designs that made the magazines back then (the Eero Saarinens and Eames pieces), not the stuff people actually lived with. It wasn't my thing then and I certainly don't want to live in it again!

I just discovered your channel last week and binge watched for tips. My daughter is annoyed but relieved now -- she's been telling me to get rid of certain items in my home and change the décor (all leather / painted accent walls) for years. Now that I've found DIY with KB I'm making some much needed change after the same furniture and décor for the last 20 years.. We were at IKEA yesterday and she asked me what "my girl Keva" said about throw pillows --them made me stick with your advice! Afterwards we went to Home Goods and I actually didn't just buy random shit that didn't fit my space or style. I love your confidence and "it hurts but it's true" advice. My daughter says I needed this straight-forward talk. I look forward to more videos and insight.

Do you EVER sit on your sofa? Do you let other people sit on your sofa? Furniture is meant to be used. Kind of reminds me of when I was young and my Italian friends’ parents (recent immigrants) covered their furniture and lamps in vinyl. So fun to sit on during the hot, humid summers. I don’t get it...🤷‍♀️ I don’t “hate” any design. There are designs that currently don’t fit my lifestyle but may in the future. Interior design is incredibly personal, so I say to each his/her own. (And money doesn’t necessarily equal good design-or even quality for that matter.)

I definitely do! It’s more so an ongoing joke. I grew up with an artist and we never sat on the furniture because she liked to admire her work and I respected that. We sit on the sofa when we eat dinner and play with the dog, I just am not someone who sits much, I’m such a busy body! Know that I understand, respect and agree with your point, I just live differently 😊.

DIY with KB I honestly meant no disrespect. I see so much emphasis by designers on selecting the right sofa that is comfortable and beautiful that it seems a waste not to enjoy it. 😉 (I don't get to sit much either with five horses on my property but I thoroughly enjoy the little time I do get to lounge on my sofa! 😂)

I feel like as long as your colors match for the most part that you're good to go! Pick the stuff that speaks to you! But if you're still hesitant about it going together try to picture it out as best you can. Try doodling it out (even if it's not perfect) and see if you like how it looks. Or like copy and paste pictures of the product on top of a photo of whatever space you want to put it, side by side and see if it's working the way you thought it would.

I had my desk out in the dining area for the longest time but couldn't stand it when my boyfriend had a day off and I had to listen to what he was watching on TV all day. I needed my own space where I could concentrate on work. It just wasn't working for me so one of my quarantine projects was cleaning out a space in the spare bedroom to set my desk up in there. I did the opposite of what she is suggesting. It also allows me to "transition" at the end of the day. I can "leave" the office as opposed to have it always there in my face when I don't want to think about work anymore at the end of the day.

I love single use spaces and truly hate open plan- I feel like open plan looks nice but I really need to have separation and I like having separate spaces. I can live with dining/kitchen/living rooms but only when living alone (a desk in the living area is just a waste of space though, no chance of being used). I also like corridors and separation- I live in the least sound insulated house ever and my landlord (who I also live with) literally removed doors and walls to make it more open and can only go on about how wonderful it is that everything is open. I may as well be sleeping in the living room, if there was just an additional door between the living room and the bedrooms it would make all the difference. I think more house shares could do with 'closed plan' but as soon as there's an enclosed room landlords rent it out as a bedroom- so many lounge rooms and disappeared this way. It's also a lazy way to make it feel like there is more space but it makes all the space unusable (for me at least). Even when living with a partner and family, I need my own space, outside of my room to work (office) or chill (enclosed lounge). I'm glad you genuinely like open plan because it's definitely the trend. I suffer through these aesthetic-but-poorly-designed-for-actual-living homes. I think French doors are a great solution because then it can be open when you want but closed when you want too.

most of her examples seemed overboard on the mixing, Most of my metals in my home are black, but I have some brass accents which I think plays nicely. As opposed to my black door knobs and curtain rods, which feel more permanent.

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on mid century modern. I would sort of describe my style as a mix of bohemian and mid century, very eclectic. I just love the look of furniture from the 50s and 60s and love to incorporate those styles with lots of greenery and color. One thing I’ve noticed is that most “mid century” style furniture that’s made today is that they all look cheap to me and very boring and basic. I used to think that west elm was the end all be all of mid century modern but every time I look at their furniture in real life it looks cheap, like doesn’t seem very solid or built well, and it’s still pricey! I’ve found that for less money I can buy authentic mid century furniture off Chairish and they look and feel so much better. To me I see those as investment pieces that can be used for decades to come because they’ve already lasted decades! I guess maybe what I’m saying is I love mid century design-not mid century “modern”.

KB thanks for your videos. We're building a fairly large home, and Hubby is getting a man cave, however we call it "the Lounge" because I'm going in there to have a glass of wine and relax - so it's everyone's place. It's a well lit large room, with two 10' French doors and it has 12' ceilings. I wanted it to resemble a cigar lounge, with its own bar and half bath. I had them painted in completely in Limousine Leather by Behr, that means; the ceiling, the walls, the doors, etc., all adre this GORGEOUS black. The floors will be reclaimed wood, and I'll add a persian rug, and four comfy leather chairs facing each other. I wanted it to look masculine! So far people who come and see the house absolutely LOVE it, especially the men do. I went bold in many of the rooms, and since the horse is big, i had a chance to play with colors. We were able to have some white walls I'm one large area - Ultra Pure White, and most of the rest of yve common areas is in Swiss Coffee, both by Behr. My sons room is dark brown, Moose Trail, with the ceiling, with a band and an oversized crown molding in UPW as well - it's so pretty!!! My other bold room is the media room, which is a warm charcoal. Our poojah room is a deep, deep purple. Some rooms are yellow, green and blue, and my daughter had fun in her rooms!!! The point is you're right, we need to do what we want I'm not following ANY trends, and it's going to be a classic, and classy home. I'm really happy I took the chance 😊

Also, I have inherited a few family antiques and LOVE every piece but can’t figure out how to incorporate them into design without my 1939 farm house (real farmhouse, not the trend, which I’m secretly tempted by as well) looking like an elderly lady lives there. I am with you on the mixed metals. I see a lot of designers talk about copper and brass together and it is really not for me. I love black and gold or black and steel. I think black metal is a great “neutral” to mix in. Chrome can even be mixed in with gold as a neutral also. But for me the warm metals are the highlight so mixing 2 warm tones just clashes. Edit: excluding brass hardware with hanging copper pots or pans that can be very French inspired. But built in copper and built in gold for me isn’t it.

Coincidentally real estate professionals say that buyers are starting to move away from open concepts & formal dining room since the Pandemic.

Exactly and that is why I laugh sometimes when it comes to design/trends across the board. Because what I find ironic about trends (color of the year, interior, styles, furniture trends, etc). The same people that make or tell us what the trends are (whether they are in or out or the must-have). They are the designers and the manufacturing from whom we purchase the items from and it changes like the wind only to return several years (like a revolving door).

Exactly!!!! Versatile interior designers (vs KZbinrs) work with all lifestyle and design preferences.

@@josephinebournes8212 and they don't put down the style that speaks to you like youtubers often do. If farmhouse is what the client likes, they'll work with that and try to incorporate it with the style of the place.

I’ve heard that only from YT honestly. There’s many people out there that still prefer open concepts like myself. I don’t love completely open, but more so a semi-open modern/transitional home. Also don’t care for dining rooms. For my family it was a waste of a room and just accumulated junk.

@@bnb0510 You can always google and read what the experts are talking about what trends are in or out for the new year. I subscribe to BH&G, Veranda, Vogue, etc magazine. There are articles in each stating what the KZbinrs are saying about the trends depending on which article you read.

I don't like monochromatic rooms, but by the same token I don't like when things don't match. I like a pop of color, but not if it's say orange and green.

Do you have a video about styling shelves? I always get too in my head about this kind of stuff but if someone could tell me, small round thing, with tall skinny thing, with a something shiny, and examples of those things in different layouts and options, I think some sort of formula would help a lot!

I actually have a pouf from West Elm and though I felt I paid a lot for it, I’m glad I did. I can either sit on it or put my feet up on it. It’s very sturdy-no sinking. I’d definitely say if you’re going to get a pouf, pay a little more for it. I love mine!

You're absolutely right about the "vampire vibes" of black painted rooms. That's exactly what I want! I'm pining for my future vampire house.

I love how you think about cleaning and dusting and actual life! For example, I cringe when I see designs with a bunch of stuff on the side table. I'm thinking, but where do I put my mug?!
