And sometimes when you go visit someone that does have the TV as the focal point, you come in the door and they don't even turn the TV off so that you can visit, and laugh and be together. They think you want the TV on also. So you just make a mental note to stay a little while. And then you excuse yourself. The constant rotation from room to room makes me so unproductive, stressed, and flustered. Also, our great room is already a dining room, living room, kindergarten classroom, gaming center, and hobby center. I love my grandma's style because she is so good about making things look fresh for a long time. Instead of doing open shelving in her kitchen, she did one or two cabinets with glass doors. I believe one of them is just cups because you don't tend to pull a lot out of those cabinets so it's easy to keep it cute. And the other is more of a display cabinet with a fun plate or something seasonal; Definitely something to consider if you're itching for that open look but with less upkeep. You can get glass that's a little frosted or funky so it's just the silhouette of the items inside and you don't have to be too particular about it. You can always change what's on display in it so freshen things up without having to do anything major.

My trend is toward minimalism. Too much "stuff" is chaotic and confusing. Disperse interesting artifacts and art as warranted in the space. Live in your home, it is not a museum. Always make your guests feel comfortable. In your budget allow for sofa cleaning occasionally. For me perfection is not an aspiration (it can only be interpreted as such by me) If my decor does not cause me stress, my guests can handle it for a short time or maybe they will choose not to visit again. .

The problem with bringing the office into a family space is this: I am on a Zoom webinar several times per month. It is a webinar to help people improve their skills in a specific area. There are 100 to 300 people on the webinar. Two people in particular have children who monopolize the parents time and are constantly interrupting/playing and the parent refuses to discipline the child or get the child out of the space. Of course, this is a discipline issue and the parent isn't doing their job. I agree with you to some extent. We have a pretty square room so we positioned the tv on the opposite wall right by the door when you enter the living room and on the wall behind the couch we installed a paneling feature wall and placed sideboards from wall to wall. Now the focal point is that wall. We also painted it a beautiful sage and bought a chandelier in brass. The first thing you see is the wall and the tv is rather hidden and will only be seen when you sit down on the couch. Maybe rethink positioning your tv.

Do you EVER sit on your sofa? Do you let other people sit on your sofa? Furniture is meant to be used. Kind of reminds me of when I was young and my Italian friends’ parents (recent immigrants) covered their furniture and lamps in vinyl. So fun to sit on during the hot, humid summers. I don’t get it...🤷♀️ I don’t “hate” any design. There are designs that currently don’t fit my lifestyle but may in the future. Interior design is incredibly personal, so I say to each his/her own. I feel like as long as your colors match for the most part that you're good to go! Pick the stuff that speaks to you! But if you're still hesitant about it going together try to picture it out as best you can. Try doodling it out (even if it's not perfect) and see if you like how it looks. Or like copy and paste pictures of the product on top of a photo of whatever space you want to put it, side by side and see if it's working the way you thought it would.

I had my desk out in the dining area for the longest time but couldn't stand it when my boyfriend had a day off and I had to listen to what he was watching on TV all day. I needed my own space where I could concentrate on work. It just wasn't working for me so one of my quarantine projects was cleaning out a space in the spare bedroom to set my desk up in there. I did the opposite of what she is suggesting. It also allows me to "transition" at the end of the day. I can "leave" the office as opposed to have it always there in my face when I don't want to think about work anymore at the end of the day.

I love single use spaces and truly hate open plan- I feel like open plan looks nice but I really need to have separation and I like having separate spaces. I can live with dining/kitchen/living rooms but only when living alone (a desk in the living area is just a waste of space though, no chance of being used). I also like corridors and separation- I live in the least sound insulated house ever and my landlord (who I also live with) literally removed doors and walls to make it more open and can only go on about how wonderful it is that everything is open. I may as well be sleeping in the living room, if there was just an additional door between the living room and the bedrooms it would make all the difference. I think more house shares could do with 'closed plan' but as soon as there's an enclosed room landlords rent it out as a bedroom- so many lounge rooms and disappeared this way. It's also a lazy way to make it feel like there is more space but it makes all the space unusable (for me at least). Even when living with a partner and family, I need my own space, outside of my room to work (office) or chill (enclosed lounge). I'm glad you genuinely like open plan because it's definitely the trend. I suffer through these aesthetic-but-poorly-designed-for-actual-living homes. I think French doors are a great solution because then it can be open when you want but closed when you want too.

most of her examples seemed overboard on the mixing, Most of my metals in my home are black, but I have some brass accents which I think plays nicely. The brass is also on things like lamps, my dining room light fixture, and some small accessories that are easier to change out if I want. As opposed to my black door knobs and curtain rods, which feel more permanent.

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on mid century modern. I would sort of describe my style as a mix of bohemian and mid century, very eclectic. I just love the look of furniture from the 50s and 60s and love to incorporate those styles with lots of greenery and color. One thing I’ve noticed is that most “mid century” style furniture that’s made today is that they all look cheap to me and very boring and basic. I used to think that west elm was the end all be all of mid century modern but every time I look at their furniture in real life it looks cheap, like doesn’t seem very solid or built well, and it’s still pricey! I’ve found that for less money I can buy authentic mid century furniture off Chairish and they look and feel so much better. To me I see those as investment pieces that can be used for decades to come because they’ve already lasted decades! I guess maybe what I’m saying is I love mid century design-not mid century “modern”.

I can’t concentrate on my type of work unless I’m in a room by myself. I just can’t . I LOVE my alone time ( I can’t even have a cat prancing around while I work. ) during my work time. All the observations seemed bang on .. one more insight I learnt after reading a book from the New York school of designs founder was if the shape is anything different from the overall shape of the room then it will seek attention so it better be something really good .. else if we don’t have design chops for it to stick to the same overarching shape of the room

KB thanks for your videos. We're building a fairly large home, and Hubby is getting a man cave, however we call it "the Lounge" because I'm going in there to have a glass of wine and relax - so it's everyone's place. It's a well lit large room, with two 10' French doors and it has 12' ceilings. I wanted it to resemble a cigar lounge, with its own bar and half bath. I had them painted in completely in Limousine Leather by Behr, that means; the ceiling, the walls, the doors, etc., all adre this GORGEOUS black. The floors will be reclaimed wood, and I'll add a persian rug, and four comfy leather chairs facing each other. I wanted it to look masculine! So far people who come and see the house absolutely LOVE it, especially the men do. I went bold in many of the rooms, and since the horse is big, i had a chance to play with colors. We were able to have some white walls I'm one large area - Ultra Pure White, and most of the rest of yve common areas is in Swiss Coffee, both by Behr. My sons room is dark brown, Moose Trail, with the ceiling, with a band and an oversized crown molding in UPW as well - it's so pretty!!! My other bold room is the media room, which is a warm charcoal. Our poojah room is a deep, deep purple. Some rooms are yellow, green and blue, and my daughter had fun in her rooms!!! The point is you're right, we need to do what we want I'm not following ANY trends, and it's going to be a classic, and classy home. I'm really happy I took the chance 😊

I think black metal is a great “neutral” to mix in. Chrome can even be mixed in with gold as a neutral also. But for me the warm metals are the highlight so mixing 2 warm tones just clashes. Edit: excluding brass hardware with hanging copper pots or pans that can be very French inspired. But built in copper and built in gold for me isn’t it.
