I stopped using old pcs as servers. Now you can just get an external hdd and plug it into the router...and older films can be stored in hundreds on cheap usb keys. I agree with the gaming part. Retro compatibility is not assured and someday there will be turning points that will make you regret not keeping an old pc.
@texemplarstudios54814 жыл бұрын
Yep. I personally don’t use them as servers, but I know some people do, so that’s why I put that in. I mainly use mine as retro gaming/secondary gaming PCs, and I sometimes just use them to relive what it was like to use old PCs back in the day!

@@realheckertrustmebro ayy same goes in italy too. Those who are at the base of a mountain near the sea have very good cable internet. I got a 200mbps. I had an old dell Inspiron laptop from about 2011 and turned it into a server! It has a (3rd gen I think?) i5, 6gb of ram, ran win7, and used to have a 750gb hard drive. I wiped it and upgraded it to win10, and swapped the HD for a 256gb SSD because the hard drive was failing. Battery was also failing, so I just removed the battery entirely and run it off of wall power. Turned it into a combination minecraft server and plex media server! Also found an old 750gb external hard drive I had laying around and use that for storing movies for the plex server. Oddly enough, it works great! I’ve had as much as 4 people on the Minecraft server at once with out a problem, and the plex server works super well for streaming movies to my TV!

@@sexkiro Tell me about it. Whatever guy at dell that engineered that laptop is a total moron. I had to take off the trackpad, keyboard, and disconnect like 10 different ribbon cables just to access the hard drive. Terrible design.

@@ArizonaJewell Agreed. The Hard drive and ram should've been at the bottom of the laptop like most laptops do.
@ArizonaJewell3 жыл бұрын
@@sexkiro The RAM was easily accessible at the bottom of the laptop for mine (it was an inspiron n7110) but the HDD wasn't. I have no idea what idiot thought that was a good design decision. It's like they made the HDD as difficult as possible to access. I had to take out like 20 screws to get to that stupid thing, all because even after performing a full clean install of windows the disc usage was always at 100% in task manager and it was slow as all hell. It wasn't a completely dead drive, but it was damn near.

@@ArizonaJewell Mine is an m5040. The ram isn't that hard you have to remove the keyboard and then you can see the ram but for the hdd you have to remove a bunch of screws and palmrest. These are a nightmare to upgrade. This was a horrible design indeed

Question, i have an old windows seven computer with 4g of ram and an Intel i3 processor. If I do what you did, could it possibly run steam VR? ( does yours?)
@texemplarstudios54812 жыл бұрын
It looks like you need Windows 10 for SteamVR, but if you upgraded to Windows 10, maybe? But with 4GB of RAM and an i3 I bet VR games would run quite slowly. Do you have a VR headset already?

If you have a spare computer with Windows 10 on it. Then you could start crypto mining. Now there is some costs to this such as power bills, overheating. But that can all be taken cared of with a few setting changes and a small attachable fan blows heat out of the case easily.

Yes. Even if the latest version doesn't work (depending on your specs/OS), you could always buy an older version that will, or you could just use an equivalent piece of software like GIMP.
